ENTRE LES MURS / THE CLASS (France, 2008,
Laurent Cantet, 128 min, Palme d’Or, Cannes Film
Festival) "The Class" is based on an autobiographical
novel by Francois Begaudeau, a drama that follows the
year in the life of a French schoolteacher working at a
high-school in a tough neighborhood of Paris. Francois
insists on an atmosphere of respect and diligence. But
his classroom ethics are put to the test when his
students begin to challenge his methods.

CELADON (France, 2006, Eric Rohmer, 106 min, Etoile d’Or, Prix de la Presse
Française du Cinéma) In an enchanted forest, back in the time of the Druids, the
shepherd Céladon and the shepherdess Astrée share a pure and chaste love. Fooled by a
suitor, Astrée dismisses Céladon, who throws himself into a river out of despair. She
thinks he's dead, but he's been secretly rescued by some nymphs. A romance filled with
doubt, hazards, and delicious temptations.
LA FILLE DE MONACO / THE GIRL FROM MONACO (France,
2008, Anne Fontaine, 95 min) Edith Lasalle (a powerful, minimalist
turn from Stephane Audran) is accused of murdering her young lover.
She refuses to defend herself or explain her conduct, so her son Louis
(Cohen) hires the best legal mind he can find, Bertrand Beauvais
(Luchini) to come from Paris to Monte Carlo and defend his mother in
court. As the victim was of Russian origins with a whiff of organised
crime about the whole affair, a bodyguard, Christophe (Zem), is hired to
keep the master out of harm’s way.

and self-respect will be slowly whittled away to nothing, he opts instead for

DISTRICT B13 (France, 2006, Pierre Morel, 84 min) The year is
2010, and a massive wall has been erected to keep the violence of the
Paris ghetto confined to District B13. This time the gangs have gone too
far, though, and when the authorities realize that a nuclear weapon has
been smuggled into the district, specially trained policeman and martial
artist Damien is assigned the task of retrieving the weapon of mass
destruction before Paris goes up in flames. He's not going to be able to
do it on his own, though, and when Damien learns that breakaway bad
guy Leïto's sister has been abducted by the very same gang, the pair
soon forges a tentative partnership. Program Coordinator: Philippe C. Dubois Main Sponsor: Bucknell University French &
