However you must know where to put them and find a means of fitting them aboard which is both safe and aesthetically-pleasing. Assea is offering a range of aluminum brackets specially designed for multihulls, which allow solar panels to be easily fitted without spoiling your boat’s lines... For more information: www.asseaboat.com Harbor berths in the Atlantic The question of a berth is always important when you become a boat owner, even more so when it is a multihull, which is inevitably beamier and takes up more space than a monohull.... Les Portes de l’Atlantique is a dry port with 350 berths, accessible 24h/24, thanks to 2.8m of water in the basin, even at the lowest possible tide. To take the boats out of the water, the port is equipped with a 50-tonne travelift for boats with a maximum beam of 7.3m. Dry storage, for the winter or to prepare your boat before leaving for a long trip, is an option which is economical, but also ecologically sound, especially as you will find a boatyard on the spot offering all types of services, and above all a team which is passionate about multihulls (the owner is a Fountaine Pajot agent). Finally, note that the port is offering six months’ storage for second-hand boats on sale-or-return. Although certain people swear by carbon, today there is an attractive alternative with glass fiber steering wheels. These are manufactured in one single piece with no glued joints, thus offering incomparable strength. The anodised aluminum hub is directly integrated into the mold. The result is an aestheticallypleasing wheel, which weighs just 20% more than a carbon one, but at a knock-out price. As an example, a 900 mm diameter steering wheel costs 1462 euros, inc. VAT. For more information: www.nautex-international.com Winch handle How do you succeed in combining the reliability of locking winch handles with the ease of use of those which don’t lock? Harken has just presented this new handle called CarboOneTouch, whose locking system is very easily deactivated by simple pressure on the handle’s arm. Thus the CarboOneTouch can either remain in position in complete safety, or be inserted and removed rapidly when maneuvers demand it. 240mm long and weighing just 590g, it is highly UV-resistant, with its composite construction, identical to the Carbo blocks. Discover it on: www.harken.com Jack Petith is a great sailor and a talented racer. 6th in the ‘82 Rhum with his 11-metre Newick Native, he beat the rising stars of the French multihull school (Poupon, Fauconnier, Kersauson...) aboard much bigger boats. Jack is also a genuine author in the English language; his rich style suits wonderfully the fabulous plot in which nautical adventures and stories of daily life in the islands are intertwined. His mastery of portraiture and the absolute sincerity of his romantic confessions form the backdrop of the cruising story, until the distressing encounter with hurricane Hugo, a killer which devastated St Croix (Virgin Islands) with gusts of 400km/h! ‘Heart of the storm, the night the boats flew’ (in French: ‘ Au cœur de la tempête, la nuit où les bateaux volaient’) is a breathtaking story which has a place amongst the great nautical books. After having rebuilt his trimaran, Jack set off again round the world and lives aboard. He is currently in Asia, and has just re-launched his superb book, which is available to download in English. Discover it on: www.dreameagles.info/HOS/ 20 >> ON TEST Editing a magazine is like this: we are often on the move, jumping from a dinghy to a catamaran, before being dropped off on the dock to continue our nautical adventures. In short, we move around quite a lot. And during our travels, we sometimes (certainly more often than other people) fall in the water, or drop our precious cellphone, which nowadays acts as a computer, for answering our e-mails and checking the speeds reached during our tests. In short, if the smartphone falls in the water, it’s a disaster! Fortunately, genuine waterproof smartphones now exist. We have had the Trekker X1 model on test for a few days - a genuinely waterproof (we tested it) smartphone with a large screen (5”), equipped with 4G. In short, ideal for reading nautical charts and answering e-mails in a hostile marine environment. The result of this test over a few days: it’s the best! The only slight criticism is that the machine is bulky, but that’s the price to be paid for having a large screen. The big ‘plus’ is the battery, which allows the machine to be left on standby for nearly a week, which means you don’t have to be forever looking for a plug during a day at sea.
