WEDNESDAY 2 DEcember at 3pm LIMITED EDITION # 2 curated by Mathieu Mercier VIEWING Saturday 28 of November 2015 from 11am to 7pm Monday 30 of November 2015 from 10am to 7pm Tuesday 1 of December 2015 from 10am to 7pm Wednesday 2 of December 2015 from 10am to 12pm PIASA 118 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré 75008 Paris - France PRESSE ET COMMUNICATION Cécile Demtchenko Woringer T +33 1 53 34 12 95 - M +33 6 22 16 85 96 [email protected] Communiqué de presse 1 On Wednesday 2 December 2015 PIASA will stage a second sale devoted to modern and contemporary editions, curated by Mathieu Mercier with the assistance of expert Isabelle Milsztein. The auction will include over 200 lots and – along with prints, lithographs and multiples – showcase Surrealist ‘oeuvres-objets’ like Man Ray’s ‘Letter-Box,’ and ‘snare pictures’ by the Nouveau Réaliste Daniel Spoerri. One of the star lots is an album of lithographs by Pop Art superstar Keith Haring (1958-90) whose paintings explore multiplication and accumulation. Stones (1989) is a series of five lithographs that examine the aesthetic potential of the duplicated motif (est. €15,000-20,000). As you approach the work of art, you realize that each of the motifs, outlined in white, is married to another. These mobile forms have striking aesthetic power. Another important lot is a Lucio Fontana ‘book-object’ containing Otto Hahn’s Portrait d’Antonin Artaud (1968) in a de luxe edition of 80 copies, along with Fontana’s die-cut plates in steel, copper and plexiglas illustrating the work (est. €15,00020,000). Other sale highlights include two emblematic ‘snare pictures’ by Daniel Spoerri (born 1930): an isolated drawer with various utensils (cutlery, string, bottle-tops); and a silver dish that swaps its usual kitchen rôle to become a sort of “vide-poches” packed with everyday objects (loose change, pencils etc.). Both works belong to the same series and date from 1975 (est. €2500-3000 a piece). 2 Another landmark item is a 1965 Boîte aux Lettres (‘Letter-Box’) by Man Ray (1890-1976) – a ‘ready-made’ marking his admiration and friendship for Marcel Duchamp. The box is adorned with a yellow label that reads LETTERS, and contains inside seven plaster letters in an American typeface. In the jokey spirit of Duchamp – and in memory of his ‘boîte alerte’ – Man Ray’s contents and container offer a game of mirrors, suggesting that the assemblage of disparate objects can enable their joint impact to be highly evocative (est. €5,000-7,000). Also of note are ten 1980s badges produced by General Idea, the collective of three Canadian artists, shown at their 2011 retrospective at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. As an example of General Idea’s use of self-mockery and parody to analyse the consumer society and the links between media and mass culture, these badges have cult status for collectors of multiples (est. €5,0006,000). Finally come prints by the American artists Wade Guyton, Josh Smith and Lawrence Weiner, along with a superb aquatint by Anish Kapoor, a book by Jean-Marc Bustamante, and Douglas Gordon’s famous ‘bite.’ 3 Keith Haring (1958-1999) Stones, 1989 Album de 5 lithographies en noir et blanc 76,1 x 56,6 cm Estimation: 15 000 / 20 000 € 4 Lucio Fontana et Otto Hahn Portrait d’Antonin Artaud, 1968 Paris, Le Soleil Noir, 1968 Livre-objet-édition de luxe série A Emboîtage-sculpture de bois vert pomme (36 x 24 x 7m) conçu par l’artiste renfermant - l’ouvrage relié plein cuir noir - planches de forme ovoïdes réalisées dans les matériaux suivants: acier, cuivre, perspex opaque ou transparent, chacune signée du monogramme et annotée «69» ainsi que deux planches d’essais rayées.
