FRCH 2223: Intermediate French II [CRN: 19191]
Prerequisite: Students must have 11 hours of French to enroll in this course.
Catalog Description: FRCH 2223 – Intermediate French II
This course focuses on French linguistics, reading, writing, and in- class discussions. It is
also a bridge course for continued studies in French and a springboard for Study Abroad
and Study Tour experiences in Francophone countries. Prerequisite(s): FRCH 2113, or
AP Language Test score of 5.
Description: This course will advance students’ communicative skills as they learn
about literary analysis and close reading.
Student Learning Outcomes: The student will gain proficiency in reading, writing,
speaking and listening in the target language. Student will gain knowledge of
Francophone cultures as well as strategies for analyzing and interpreting literary
passages.
Transformative Learning Objectives: The University of Central Oklahoma is a
learning-centered organization committed to transformative education through active
engagement in the teaching-learning interchange, scholarly and creative pursuits,
leadership, global competency, healthy lifestyles, and service to others.
This course addresses 3 of the university’s transformative learning goals. Discipline
Knowledge by enhancing students skills in the target language as well as introducing
cultural material and literary works; Global and Cultural Competency by enhancing skill
development in the target language and introducing both cultural and literary issues; and
Research and Creative Activity by introducing them to close reading and techniques of
literary analysis.

Intrigue: Langue, culture et mystère dans le monde francophone (3ème édition) par
Elizabeth Blood et Yasmina Mobarek
and its accompanying Student Activities Manual
Course Requirements
1. Attendance: All sessions must be attended! This class cannot function without
your presence and active participation.
2. Preparation: Preparation means reviewing grammar material at home and
approaching the readings and listening activities in-between classes. You will
need to be ready with your grammatical questions and to engage in activities –
written and oral – that relate to the lesson.
3. Homework: Homework will be collected each week. It will involve grammar
drilling as well as listening and viewing activities.
4. Quizzes: There will four 2-chapter tests that will cover grammar review,
comprehension, cultural material, and literary analysis
5. Oral evaluation: You will be evaluated twice during the course, through a
reading passage drawn from the syllabus and through discussion questions.
6. Cultural Activities: You will be required to participate in five cultural activities
during the course the semester. These may include programs offered by the
French Club, the Department, the College, and the University, as well as
community events including those sponsored by the Alliance Française of OKC.
7. Final Exam: This exam will cover grammatical points, the course narrative, and
the literary works as well as the interpretive methods covered in class.

1. Regents' Statement on Course Workload and Homework-OSRHE II-2-34
It is expected that a full-time college student will spend a minimum amount of time each
week in class attendance and study out of class approaching a 40-hour work week. A
person employed on a full time basis should not simultaneously expect to maintain a fulltime academic schedule. At the undergraduate level, this means that for each hour in
class, a student is expected to spend at least three (3) hours doing homework. For a
three-credit class, a student is expected to spend nine (9) hours a week doing homework.
