The Salvation Army North NSW Division 7th March 2014
The Salvation Army North NSW Division 7th March 2014 Transformation, Integrity, Compassion Friends Once again, it is good to greet you in the name of Jesus! His life – in word & deed – is the pattern on which we model our own lives. Our calling, as His followers, is to reflect his mercy, grace and love. May the Holy Spirit help us to do just that. In the book “Return to The Lord”, Lee Greiss includes this short illustration and comment.. A group of mountain hikers came across an old woodsman with an axe on his shoulder. "Where are you going?" they asked him. "I'm headed up the mountain to get some wood to repair my cabin," replied the woodsman. "But why are you going up the mountain?" they asked incredulously. "There are plenty of trees all around us here." "I know," he said, "but I need strong timber and it grows only on the highest elevations, where the trees are tested and toughened by the weather around them. The higher up you go, the stronger the timber grows." And that is what God desires for us - that through the winds of trial and the storms of temptation we would grow strong and live on a higher level - strong to resist the devil's urging, strong to serve God, and strong as we stand together in faith and service to one another. The fact is that the strong timber (and the weak timber) is inevitably tested. For us, this is an inescapable dimension of ministry. More often than not, the testing is uncomfortable and not pleasant. It probably wouldn’t be a test if it was (pleasant)! James seemed to know it, he wrote… Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. (James 1:2) Be encouraged and affirmed! God is faithful and by the promise of his Word, He will never leave you or forsake you. He is with you every step of the way. Much grace to you all. Earle & Chris Divisional Leaders PS. See you all at Fellowship. We are truly looking forward to sharing with you. Page 1 of 7 “Prayer is where the action is.” John Wesley Please Pray For……………. David & Meryl Cook News from around the Division………..………… Pastoral Care in the Outback Envoys Lloyd & Vicki Graham During the time we were travelling to and from Kempsey (4-10 Feb) the phone calls and emails for help in the outback continued. A young family man suffering depression phoned to talk with Lloyd and they talked on the phone several times over the week. Friday we had a call to say a man we visit had been killed in a car accident Thursday night at Louth (ph to say we were needed) and a call from the media wanting to do interviews - neither possible as it was the day of Mum’s funeral. We received emails and phone calls from a family having to ‘walk away’ from their property needing help to relocate and an older couple who have lost their property as well needing help with living expenses (no source of income and massive debts). Wonderful Pam Wilkes, Territorial Rural Services Support Coordinator, was an amazing support during this time handling both of these situations. KEMPSEY CORPS:As many of you are aware by now we have taken possession of our new food trailer. As a result many wonderful and exciting new ministry opportunities have arisen for us out in the community. However, along with this new “ministry machine” come new requirements for the volunteers who man it. At present we have four people with food handling certification; Capt. Karen Keddie, Fay Kirkman, Julie Linton and Mark Johnson. One of these must be in attendance to supervise the operations of the trailer and participating volunteers. This applies to any sausage sizzle, cake stall or any activity where food is being distributed or sold by us to the general public. You may if you wish and at your own expense obtain your own food handling certification. Mark has all the information about it and can point you in the right direction if you would like to step up to a supervisory role. In addition to the above requirement, ALL volunteers need to have their “Working with children” clearance. This is simply a matter of making an appointment with Capt. Karen who will then fill out the required online form with you. Then within a week or two we will have received your clearance and you will be good to go. "Q1 - January, February, March (Due 10 March 2014) This is a great opportunity to consider any repairs or replacements of equipment or general 'wear and tear' around the place in your upcoming budget. We need to ensure the safety of you and your employees, as well as the community. (This will help avoid heavy workers comp fines later on!) Once you have completed your inspection checklist please scan or mail a copy to DHQ Kathy Ramsey, or myself here at THQ - We are then able to record and note anything that is of issue or has been identified as a potential issue to the correct team. " SALVATIONIST SUPPLIES CHANGE IN MANAGEMENT Until further notice, the management of Salvationist Supplies is under the office of the Assistant Secretary for Business Administration. Page 4 of 7 PERSONNEL REPORT 2014/9 HEALTH UPDATE Liam (Mission & Resource Team-Systems/Samis) and Allison Holland’s son, Asher, is very ill and is in Westmead Hospital. Asher is also the grandson of Majors Sandra (Ryde Corps) and Topher Holland (Territorial Strategic Disaster Response). Your intercessory prayer would be appreciated for Asher, as well as his parents, Allison and Liam and his grandparents, Sandra and Topher. THANKS Majors Brenda (Broken Hill Corps) and Kelvin Stace (Broken Hill Social Programs) would like to pass on our thanks and appreciation to all those who have prayed and sent cards and well wishes for Kelvin's recovery. He is doing fine - just a bit impatient with himself expecting to bounce back quicker that is actually happening. We both look forward to the day he regains full use of his shoulder. Your continued prayer support would be appreciated. ENGAGEMENT NEWS We congratulate Major Colin Maxwell (Capricorn Region Corps) and Ms Jan Geaney (Finance Department, South Queensland Division) who have announced their engagement. We wish Colin and Jan well for their future life and service together. BABY NEWS Last Thursday evening, 27th February, the Grigg family was excited and blessed with the safe arrival of Amelia-Rose Louise Grigg to Drew and Ruth. She was 4145gm (9lb 2oz) & 51cm long. Amelia-Rose is the granddaughter of Majors Elwyn (Office of The Chief Secretary) and Raewyn Grigg (School for Leadership Training). We congratulate Drew and Ruth, and the Grigg family as they celebrate God’s precious gift to them, a beautiful girl, Amelia-Rose. Major Beatrice Kay (Tuggerah Lakes Corps) is celebrating the birth of her eighth grandchild and seventh grandson, Tommy James Kay born today, Tuesday 4th March, 2014 to Kristy and Andrew. Archie is thrilled with his new brother and playmate. Tommy weighed 3.605kg or 7lbs 15ozs. Certainly the 'KAY' name is alive and well as Noel would say, “God is good all the time”. Congratulations to all the family and may God continue to bless Tommy and the Kay family. RESIGNATION We thank Majors Beverley and David McMurray for their service. Beverley and David are standing aside from Officership for a season to take leadership of a church in Melbourne and we, The Salvation Army have felt it right in the Lord to release them to this purpose. “The LORD your God among you is powerful— he will save and he will take joyful delight in you. In his love he will renew you with his love; he will celebrate with singing because of you.” Zephaniah 3 v 17 (NIV) Page 5 of 7 Page 6 of 7 Page 7 of 7
