„Classic Chinses Medicine: Emotions, Spirituality and Alchemy“
Elisabeth Rochat de la Vallée
was born in Paris in 1949 and has studied Chinese literature, philosophy and medicine
extensively, holding degrees in Philosophy and the Classics and in Chinese Studies. She
collaborated with Dr Jean Schatz until his death ( ✝ 1984), and with Fr Claude Larre (✝ 2001) for
nearly 30 years, both as a researcher and translator on classical Chinese thinking and medical
texts. After a year in Taiwan (1974-75), she began teaching at the Ricci Institute in Paris; she has
been later its secretary general until 2005. She worked during more than 12 years on the Grand
Ricci, a comprehensive encyclopedic Chinese-French dictionary, and was its chief editor for the 4
last years before its publication in 2001. She is a senior lecturer on classical Chinese medicine at
the European School of Acupuncture and has exceptional knowledge of the medical classics,
grounded by her experience as an acupuncture practitioner. She teaches Chinese philosophy at
the Jesuit University, in Paris.
She teaches Chinese Philosophy, Chinese classical language and Chinese traditional medicine in
about fifteen countries at various universities, institutes and schools. She has written numerous
books, articles and pamphlets.
Elisabeth ROCHAT DE LA VALLÉE
Born in 1949, in Paris.
After the French baccalauréat, "Lettres supérieures" and "Première supérieure" at Jules Ferry (Paris),
Licence and Master Degree in Classical Literature (Paris-Nanterre), Licence and Master Degree in
Philosophy (Paris-Nanterre) and D.E.A. in Chinese (Paris-Jussieu).
From 1970, collaboration with Fr Claude LARRE and studies in Chinese Language.
Participation to studies in Classical Chinese. Auditor in Chinese at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes
Etudes, with Max Kaltenmark.
1974-75: Stay in Taiwan and studies in Contemporary Chinese at the Hsin-chu Language Institute.
From 1976, collaboration with Fr. Larre and Dr. Jean Schatz on Chinese thinking and on classical
medical texts.
Teaching and seminars at the Paris Ricci Institute (Chinese thinking) and at the École Européenne
d’Acupuncture (theorical basis of Chinese medicine).
Teaching at the Jesuit University Centre Sèvres (Chinese philosophy and spirituality).
Participation to translation works.
D.E.A. (Diplôme d'Études Approfondies) in Chinese (Paris VII-Jussieu). Participation to cooperative
researches on the sciences in China, traditional medicine, connected to the CNRS (National Center of
Scientific Research).
Teacher at the Nantes University of Medicine (medical school) in the context of the Acupuncture
Inter-university Diploma.
Guest teacher in other medical school (Bobigny …)
Editorial board senior member for the « Ricci Dictionary of Single Chinese Characters » (2 vol. 1200
pages each and a volume of indexes published in 1999) and for the « Grand Ricci » (encyclopaedic
comprehensive Chinese-French dictionary, 7 volumes, around 9 000 pages), published in December
2001.
Senior member of the Organization Comittee of the triennial International Colloque of Sinology on the
History of Chinese-Western Relationships until 2005.
