THE LEGEND CONTINUES

Please join us on Wednesday, December 4 at a luncheon marking the centenary of
the Ottawa Little Theatre (OLT) and the launch of the book entitled "Staging a
Legend: The Legend Continues", by Iris Winston.
The presentation will include remarks by the Theatre President, John Mark Keyes, and a brief theatrical reading of
excerpts from the book presented by OLT’s actors during the luncheon. Copies of the book will be available at $25
each, including tax.
The history of OLT is the story of Canada’s oldest amateur theatre, one that has strongly influenced the development of
theatre across the country. Founded in 1913, it survived—without direct financial support from any level of
government—two major fires, two world wars and the Great Depression, supported by a growing membership and the
determination of a few enthusiastic and energetic individuals. Originally called the Society for the Study and Production
of Dramatic Art, it was the first Canadian branch of the Drama League of America before becoming an independent
society known as the Ottawa Drama League. With a 462-seat auditorium, and fully licensed lobby, OLT is anything but
"little". Between 50,000 and 60,000 patrons walk through its doors each season to enjoy its plays, special events and
more. OLT has produced over 1,000 plays in its first century. All directors, designers, actors and stage crew are
volunteers. During its long and illustrious history, many of the actors who stood on the OLT stage have gone on to
successful careers in film and television - such as, Rich Little, Luba Goy and Dan Aykroyd.

lunch at 12:15 pm. Signed copies of the book can be purchased at the event and through the office.

le centenaire du Ottawa Little Theatre (OLT) et le lancement du livre d’Iris Winston,
intitulé Staging a Legend: The Legend Continues.
L’activité inclura une allocution du président du théâtre, John Mark Keyes, et une brève représentation donnée par des
membres de la troupe de l’OLT. Une copie du livre sera disponible à 25$, incluant les taxes.
L’histoire de l’OLT est celle de la troupe de comédiens amateurs la plus ancienne du Canada; histoire qui a fortement
influencé l’évolution du théâtre dans ce pays. Fondée en 1913, elle a survécu, sans appui financier gouvernemental
direct quel qu’il soit, à deux incendies majeurs, à deux guerres mondiales et à la Grande Dépression, appuyée par un
nombre croissant de membres et la détermination de quelques personnes énergiques. Appelée au départ la Society for
the Study and Production of Dramatic Art, elle a été la première ramification canadienne de la Drama League of
America avant de devenir une troupe indépendante connue sous le nom Ottawa Drama League. Doté d’une salle de
462 places et d’un hall possédant tous les permis nécessaires, l’OLT n’a rien de « petit* ». Entre 50 000 et 60 000
personnes y assistent, chaque saison, à des représentations, activités spéciales et autres. L’OLT a produit plus de
1 000 pièces au cours de son premier centenaire. Tous les metteurs en scène, ensembliers, acteurs et tout le
personnel de scène sont bénévoles. Pendant sa longue et illustre existence, nombreux sont les acteurs, tels que Rich
Little, Luba Goy et Dan Aykroyd, qui se sont produits sur la scène de l’OLT avant faire carrière avec succès au cinéma
et à la télévision.

lieu à 11 h 45, avant le déjeuner qui sera servi à 12 h 15. Des copies signées peuvent être achetées lors de l’activité et
