Adsumus: The Council Prayer
E
very session of the Second Vatican Council began with the prayer
Adsumus, which has been historically used at councils, synods and other
Church gatherings for hundreds of years, being attributed to St. Isidore
of Seville (c. 560 – 4 April 636).
English
Here we are, O Lord, Holy Spirit, we stand before you, hampered by our faults,
but for a special purpose gathered together in your name. Come to us and be
with us and enter our hearts.
Teach us what we are to do and where we ought to tend; show us what we must
accomplish, so that, with your help, we may be able to please you in all things.
May you alone be the beginning and catalyst of our judgments, who alone with
God the Father and his Son possess a glorious name.
Do not allow us to disturb the order of justice, you who love equity above all
things. Let not ignorance draw us to what is wrong. Let not partiality sway our
minds or respect of riches or persons pervert our judgment.
But unite us to you effectually by the gift of your grace alone, that we may be one
in you and never forsake the truth; inasmuch as we are gathered together in your
name, so may we in all things hold fast to justice tempered by mercy, so that in
this life our judgment may in no way be at variance with you, and in the life to
come we may receie an everlasting rewards for deeds well done. Amen.

Estamos todos aquí delante de Ti, oh Espíritu Santo Señor nuestro, en cierto que
atrapados en nuestros pecados, pero también espontáneamente reunidos en Tu
nombre.
Ven a nosotros, quédate con nosotros, dígnate colmar nuestras almas.
Enséñanos lo que debemos tratar, cómo proceder y muéstranos aquello que
debemos decidir, para que con Tu ayuda podamos en todo agradarte.
Sé el único inspirador de nuestras resoluciones, el único que las haga eficaces, Tu
al solo que, con el Padre y el Hijo, sube toda la gloria.
Tú, que amas sobre toda cosa aquello que es justo, no permitas que sea violado
por nosotros el orden de la justicia. Haz que la ignorancia no nos haga caer en el
error, che la parcialidad no logre plegarnos y que la oferta de regalos o
consideraciones hacia las personas no nos corrompa.
Únenos eficazmente a Ti con el don de Tu gracia, para que seamos en Tí una sola
cosa y no nos alejemos en ningún modo de la verdad. Y ya que estamos reunidos
en Tu nombre, haz que en cada cosa nos atengamos a la justicia suavizada por la
caridad, para que aquí abajo ningún pensamiento nuestro nunca se aleje de Ti y
en la otra vida, por haber procedido bien, consigamos el premio eterno. Amén.

pécheurs, en ton Nom seulement nous sommes ici réunis.
Viens à nous, demeure avec nous, daigne habiter dans nos coeurs. Enseignenous ce que nous avons à faire, le but vers lequel nous devons marcher. Montrenous quelle tâche nous avons à réaliser pour que nous puissions, avec ton
assistance, Te plaire en toutes nos actions. Sois notre seul conseiller, le seul
inspirateur de nos jugements, Toi seul, avec le Père et le Fils, possèdes le Nom de
Gloire.

Toi qui aimes l’équité parfaite, ne permets pas que nous jetions le désordre dans
ce qui est conforme à la justice. Fais en sorte que l’ignorance ne nous entraîne
pas sur une fausse route, que la partialité n’influence pas nos actes et que nous
ne soyons pas séduits ni par un avantage personnel, ni par une complaisance
envers quelqu’un. Attache-nous à Toi afin de nous rendre efficaces par le seul
don de Ta grâce. Que nous trouvions en Toi notre unité, qu’à aucun moment
nous ne quittions le chemin de la vérité.
Puissions-nous dans toute notre activité observer la droiture en nous laissant
guider par la foi afin que maintenant nos avis ne s’opposent jamais à ta volonté
et que plus tard nous obtenions une récompense éternelle, réunis en Ton Nom.

Siamo qui dinanzi a te, o Spirito Santo: sentiamo il peso delle nostre debolezze,
ma siamo tutti riuniti nel tuo nome; vieni a noi, assistici, scendi nei nostri cuori:
insegnaci tu ciò che dobbiamo fare, mostraci tu il cammino da seguire, compi tu
stesso quanto da noi richiedi.
Sii tu solo a suggerire e guidare le nostre decisioni, perché tu solo, con Dio Padre
e con il Figlio suo, hai un nome santo e glorioso.
Non permettere che sia lesa da noi la giustizia, tu che ami l’ordine e la pace; non
ci faccia sviare l’ignoranza, non ci renda parziali l’umana simpatia, non ci
influenzino cariche o persone.
Tienici stretti a te col dono della tua grazia, perché siamo una sola cosa in te e in
nulla ci discostiamo dalla verità.
Fa’ che riuniti nel tuo santo nome, sappiamo contemperare bontà e fermezza
insieme così da far tutto in armonia con te, nell’attesa che, per il fedele
compimento del dovere, ci siano dati in futuro i premi eterni. Amen.
