OE – like in particular
The mouth is very open, but the lips are pushed in front: heure, oeuf,
coeur, …
EU – like the i in sir but much longer
Mouth closes up, the lips are pushed in front, and it is a very common sound
in French:
Je, le, feu, peux, heureux, me…
I – like the ee in fee. The lips are spread to the side like a smile. The month is
almost closed. The tongue is flat and touches the palate. Your voice goes up:
Si, y, lit, vit, pris, mis…
U – The mouth is almost closed; the lips are pushed forward and the tongue is
forward and flat. Be careful to push the air out not in, your voice goes up:
lu, tu , bu, vu….
É – Note the direction of the accent. It is called accent aigu. This sound does
not exist in English.
The lips are spread to the side, the mouth opens a little, and the tongue pushes
on the lower front teeth.
The voice comes from the back of the mouth and goes down.
Note that the letter E combined with T, Z, and R at the end of a word make the
sound É:
Les, nez, chanter, chanté, épicée, épée, cassés, pied…
È – Note the direction of the accent, it is called accent grave. It does the same
sound as e in "net".

E in front of a double consonant becomes È:
Benne, terre, pelle, appelle, maisonette, cette, … O – Lips are pushed up and rounded, closed like for a kiss. The throat rounds
up.
The voice goes deep. The sound is similar as the O in "bone".
Pose, aux, eau, bateau, chevaux, pot, trop, plutôt, …
OU – like the OO in "tool" but stronger and longer.
Poule, coule, choux, roule, ou, boule, boulevard, routard…
UI - Combines U and I. Lips are forward and extended like for a smile, mouth
nearly closed.
Huit, huile, tuile, fuite, pluie, ….
OUI – Combines OU and I, like the sound "wea" in "weak".
Oui, Louis, kiwi, weekend….
OI – Combines O and A.
Moi, toi, toit, trois, quoi, pois…
