Working at Heights fatal falls bring new urgency to workplace safety
Taking the appropriate precautions when working at heights is a priority for all of our employees, whether
directly involved in the work, supervising a crew doing the task or simply as an observer passing by the
work area.
Sadly, there have been three fatalities in just two months in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador
including one so close to home at the Embassy building.
Dan Crummell, the Minister responsible for Service NL, said he cannot yet say what went wrong or
whether any particular changes are needed.

industrial fatalities. (CBC )
"The thing that concerns me the most is that, you know, we have very robust legislation in place. We have
very vigorous regulations in place," Crummell told CBC News.
Newfoundland and Labrador labour legislation dictates that when people are working higher than three
metres, they must abide by such rules as wearing a safety harness, or have guardrails or safety nets in
place.
At IOC, we also have specific standards for working at heights and the elevated heights measure is even
more stringent than that of the province at 1.8 meters. We ask each and every employee and contractor to
please review the attached Single Page Lesson on working at heights and to take the time needed to
ensure your work area and that of your coworkers is safe. Like your family and loved ones, we too want
you to go home safely at the end of the shift.
For detailed information on the C4 Working At Height Standard please refer to the Mine to Port Intranet
under HSE - Safety - Working At Height.
Sincerely,
Claudio Lazzari
Manager, HSE Corporate Governance
