For three decades, from 1900 to 1930, the leading architects and sculptors place their creativity at the service of this wealthy clientele from Bilbao, Portugalete, Getxo, Mundaka, Balmaseda, etc. by designing magnificent buildings to scale, rigorously following the development of assimilated styles such as Eclecticism, Historicism and Modernism (Epalza, Anasagasti, Camiña), while H. Basterra, Q. de Torre, M. Huerta, V. Dueñas, M. García Salazar and others sculpt marvellous collections, at times imitating the Rodinian Naturalism learnt in Paris. 94 617 72 01 www.mundaka.org Cemetery. Several mausoleums. 94 683 19 51 www.learjai.com The industrial revolution attracted an enormous mass of Castilian immigrants, who required a whole range of municipal and provincial administrative services. This leads to great development in council architecture, generally conservative in style, through which the tendency in standardised modern styles can be followed. Bilbao, among the urban municipalities (city hall, regional government headquarters) and Artzentales and Galdames, among the rural ones (town hall), can be proposed as examples of responses to similar needs, although ephemeral in the latter case as demographic growth was suddenly halted when the mines were depleted. Eguzki Alde house. Regional Government of Bizkaia headquarters. Bilbao Maison Eguzki Alde. Bilbao Bilbao residents’ liking of theatre performances –a clearly urban type of leisure– is long standing, since Baroque times, was served precariously by the city council with a succession of different theatres, which were to find their definite location in the Arenal and then also in the new Ensanche. The models to be imitated, normally copied from Italy, had become established in all Spanish cities and in Bilbao. There are two large theatres –or similar– and also several smaller ones. The Arriaga /1886, Joaquín Rucoba, French Eclecticism –Romanticism, and Campos (1901, J.B. Darroguy, Modernism) are among the former, while the Filarmónica, ”El Sitio”, Sociedad Bilbaína, etc. are among the latter. Stages, stalls and boxes are essential parts of the theatre interiors, although it is the façades where the style can be most appreciated. Over and above building devoted to leisure and administration, a catalogue or residential dwellings stands out. Promoters were to buy plots and then commission designs from architects following the most diverse styles and trends, from Eclecticism to Art Deco and Rationalism, wile also including Historicism, Modernism and English and Basque Regionalisms. The Ensanche and Campo Volantín districts in Bilbao, and also Getxo, held, and in part still hold, a rich range of houses between party walls destined for rental, and detached villas in their own grounds, respectively. The tastes of that affluent society are well reflected in the catalogue of properties: large rambling houses and mansions or villas, which from 1910 onwards were to employ new materials such as concrete and iron. Workers’ dwellings, due to budget and space considerations, are less interesting. Pantheons. Bilbao The enormous growth being experienced at different points in Bizkaia after the Second Carlist War, which coincides with industrialisation, boosts the development of Bilbao, the city called to lead this process all along the river estuary, which, necessarily, has to take place at the expense of the closest parishes, especially Abando. With the territorial problem concerning a rural area desired for a long time finally solved, Achúcarro, Hoffmeier and Alzola drew up the Ensanche Plan, approved in 1876. This occupation of territory in Abando was approached based on orthogonally arranged long streets, except two –Elcano and Ercilla– which intersect the scheme diagonally, with buildings laid out in closed blocks. Communications and public equipment, however, were less reflected. Demographic expansion, due greatly to the arrival of immigrant masses, created the need for appropriate religious attendance, which the church sought to met by founding new churches in all places where they were required, sometimes with the help of private patrons. In spite of the unstoppable process of secularisation, the new churches contributed towards overcoming the feeling of rootlessness and the integration of newcomers. The religious architectonic language, in keeping with tradition, was typical of Neo-Mediaeval styles. For this reason, Neo-Romanesque and Neo-Gothic are abundant (Iglesia de la Compañía-Bilbao), while Neo-Mudejar and others are unknown. Rucabado, Bastida, Smith, Amann, etc. have or had religious works in Bizkaia but, unfortunately, the list of works which have disappeared is quite long. Portugalete Biscay bridge. Portugalete Santa Ana chapel. Getxo Honorific monuments are a form of commemoration. In memory of her charitable actions, Dª Casilda Iturrizar was honoured in Bilbao, and for his role in industrial promotion, the same happened to Victor Chavarri in Portugalete. Both were references of their times, people who took on a philanthropic commitment with society, which wished to perpetuate their memory. In other cases, it is the historic role played which is commemorated (D. Diego López de Haro, founder of Bilbao), or their position as an outstanding artist or writer (the musician Arriaga, Unamuna). Their gain: immortality, which in the latter monument is symbolised by the muse who raises her infinite grievance to the heavens while playing her harp. The catalogue of modern commemorative public sculpture in Bizkaia is to preserve the memory of founders, artists, entrepreneurs and philanthropists, much more than to glorify heroes. 94 406 55 19 www.sopelana.net Ermitage Santa Ana. Monuments honorifiques. Honorific monuments Santurtzi Pont Biscaye. Portugalete Modern art takes on great complexity and wealth in Bizkaia. The former is caused by the crisis of academicism in favour of Romanticism and of different “isms”. And the latter is justified in that a minority but dynamic local community, made wealthy through mining, steel-making, shipbuilding and financial services, spends extensively on comfort and sumptuary goods around the 19th to 20th century transition. Their development is not linear but many patrons are pleased with regional styles; finally, all options are present, carried out by local craftsmen. The built landscapes of the Ensanche in Bilbao and of Algorta-Getxo reflect this prosperity. The same is true of the collections of painting and sculpture amassed by some families and by the Fine Arts Museum in Bilbao. The cemeteries in Getxo, DerioBilbao, Mundaka, Portugalete, etc. also share the benefits of this positive period. Eglises. Urbanisme. Town planning oficinas ART MOD ERNe bideak rutas
