NOVEMBER 2010
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
On your next visit to our union office I would encourage the membership to ask for a tour of
our new welding center which is located in our parking lot. Our Education Coordinator Dave
Cribb has done a fantastic job with the design, lay-out and construction of the eight booth
mobile unit. We are currently running a basic program on Saturdays with a second course
ready to start. The students will do basic torch, stick and mig welding. The individual goal of
the students will either be to obtain general working knowledge or the option to continue
training to secure a CWB four position welding certificate.
The work picture in Ottawa remains very strong with upwards of 100 members on the St.
Isidore Solar project alone. I would personally like to thank our shop steward Mike Kelly for
the excellent job he has done and continues to do with the many challenges we have faced
from the very beginning of this significant project. Ottawa Congress Centre is another large
construction project which deserves mention. Kevin Morris, our shop steward on site is
working extremely hard to make sure concerns from both the members (over 100) and
contractor are being handled in the proper fashion.
It is also important that I personally thank the over 100 travelers working in our jurisdiction.
These members are doing a fantastic job in representing their home local unions. I have
always considered it to be my personal goal to not only have the Local 586 membership fully
employed, but to welcome travelers. We have achieved both! This is a testament to the hard
work and dedication demonstrated by all.
I would also like to report that we have filed a certification application on BDM Electric
which is a non-union contractor who has been a thorn in our side for many years. The hard
work of both John Harrison and John Bourke as our organizers continues to pay dividends as
we strive to increase our marketshare.

Cher confrères et sœurs,
Lors de votre prochaine visite au bureau de notre syndicat, je vous encourage à demander à
visiter notre nouveau centre de soudure situé dans notre stationnement. Notre coordonnateur
de l’éducation Dave Cribb a fait un travail de conception, de configuration et de construction
fantastique de l’unité mobile de huit cabines. Nous offrons actuellement un programme de
base le samedi, et un deuxième cours est prêt à commencer. Les étudiants feront de la soudure
au chalumeau, au bâton et au procédé MIG. Le but des étudiants sera d’obtenir une
connaissance de travail générale ou de poursuivre la formation pour obtenir un certificat en
soudure à quatre postes du BCS.
L’image du travail à Ottawa demeure très bonne avec plus de 100 membres travaillant au
projet solaire St. Isidore seulement. Je remercie personnellement notre délégué syndical Mike
Kelley pour l’excellent travail qu’il a accompli et qu’il continue d’accomplir devant les
nombreux défis que nous avons dû relever depuis le tout début de cet important projet. Le
Centre des congrès d’Ottawa est un autre grand projet de construction qui mérite d’être
mentionné. Kevin Morris, notre délégué syndical sur place travaille très fort pour s’assurer
que les préoccupations des membres (plus de 100) et de l’entrepreneur sont examinées de
façon appropriée.
Il est également important que je remercie personnellement plus de 100 voyageurs travaillant
dans notre juridiction. Ces membres font un travail fantastique en représentant leur syndicat
local. J’ai toujours considéré comme mon but personnel de ne pas avoir seulement des
membres du local 586 pleinement employés, mais d’accueillir aussi les voyageurs. Nous
avons réussi sur les deux plans! Voilà un témoignage du travail acharné et du dévouement de
tous.
J’ajoute que nous avons déposé une demande d’accréditation chez BDM Electric, qui est un
entrepreneur non syndiqué qui est une épine au pied pour nous depuis de nombreuses années.
Le bon travail de John Harrison et de John Bourke comme organisateurs continue de rapporter
des dividendes au moment où nous nous efforçons d’accroître notre part du marché.

Our next regular monthly meeting will be held Monday November 15th, 2010 @ 7:00 p.m. at 1178 Rainbow Street,
Gloucester, Ontario. COME OUT AND TAKE AN ACTIVE PART! To be admitted, you must present an official dues
receipt for at least the month of September 2010. The supper will be served at 5:30 p.m. before the general meeting.
RETIREES MEETING:
The next meeting will be held Monday November 15th , 2010 at 10:00am.
It is with deep sadness and regret that we inform you of the death of Brother Ronald Turner who passed
away on October 12th, 2010. We wish to express our sincere condolences to his family and friends.
UPCOMING EVENTS
 IBEW’s ANNUAL TURKEY BINGO - November 20th, 2010. Doors open at 12:30pm. No one under 18 yrs
admitted. Cash Bar. Bingo cards are $1.00 per strip of three (maximum 5 strips per person). This money will be
returned via bingo’s throughout the session.
 IBEW CHILDREN’S XMAS PARTY – This year the kid’s party will be held on Sunday December 12th, 2010.
Doors open at 12:30pm. LAST CHANCE TO REGISTER – NOVEMBER 12TH, 2010 !! There’ll be face
painting, letters to Santa, cotton candy, balloons, soft drinks, etc…and coffee and donuts. Call the office to
register your children from newborn to age 12. For more information call Mike Bruyère at 613-837-6911.
 IBEW ADULT XMAS PARTY – Will be held on December 4th, 2010 at the Crown Plaza @ 101 Lyon Street.
Tickets are $25 each and includes dinner, wine, music & prizes. Tickets available at the office.
Hockey Friday’s are back, starting: Friday November 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th, Dec 3rd, 10th & 17th,
2010 at 1pm at the Ottawa University. Fore more information, contact the hall.

You need to complete the 30hr Health & Safety, Basic Code Book and Construction I BEFORE you go to
Basic Trade School!
If you have not completed the required pre trade school training you will NOT be eligible for reimbursement
for trade school registration cost.
Effective May 1, 2010, all apprentices have to bring their Instructor Observation and Evaluation form
with their official school transcripts and receipt in order to be reimbursed.
