SCRIPT Test 1
1. arriving at the airport
2 friends / a couple
airport background noise
Nicolas: Aren’t I glad to have my feet safely back on the ground! Honestly, that was such a
long trip; this holiday had better be worth it!
Sandy: I know, 6 hours in the plane with all those crummy films, too! Did you watch the one
about those two teenagers falling in love? What rubbish!
Nicolas: No, luckily, I didn’t! I was asleep at the time.
Sandy: You mean you actually managed to get to sleep? How could you? The passenger next
to me wouldn’t stop chatting to his girlfriend!
Nicolas: That’s why I took earplugs! I just got on the plane, took out my blanket and went
straight to sleep!
Sandy: And you’re the one that’s complaining! I don’t believe it! I didn’t sleep a wink; I was
so worried about the pilot falling asleep!
Nicolas: Oh, don't be stupid, let’s stop talking about that and find our luggage…
2. finding luggage at the luggage pick-up point
2 friends / a couple
airport background noise
Sandy: Keep your eyes out for mine; it’s a big black sports bag with a white belt and two tags
on it.
Nicolas: Worried about losing it were you?
Sandy: Quite honestly, yes! After all, it’s a long way from London Heathrow to here in New
York.
Nicolas: You know, Sandy, the length of the journey doesn’t matter; no-one’s going to steal a
bag up in the air, are they?
Sandy: Thanks for that bit of information, smarty-pants! Oh, here’s mine, it’s a bit heavy but
at least I’ve got it! Now, what is yours like?
Nicolas: Ummm… it’s kind of beige, a beige suitcase …
Sandy: That’s not much help! In fact, there don’t seem to be any cases left on the carousel…
beige you said? Can’t you give any more details?
Nicolas: Errr… it’s a beige suitcase with a broken strap and stickers of… Australia, no,
Indonesia on the side… I really must find it, Sandy, the trip will be a wash-out otherwise…
help me look for it…. please…

Sandy: You mean it’s just like this one here, beige with a broken strap and stickers of … not
Indonesia but … let’s see… Croatia!
Nicolas: What a relief! Yes, that IS mine, thanks!
Sandy: Next time, Mr well-worn-traveller, remember at least which stickers are on it!
3. getting to the hotel
2 friends / a couple
traffic noises, cars honking
Nicolas: Right Sandy, I think we might as well take the tube… sorry, the subway to get to the
hotel, don’t you?
Sandy: Quite frankly, Nicolas, you know, I really am jetlagged and I don’t know if I can
face going through all the palaver of changing stations and all that…
Nicolas: Oh, go on, that’s half the fun of the subway… look, from JFK airport to the centre of
Manhattan isn’t really that complicated, you just…
Sandy: No way! I’m sorry but you’re beginning to get on my nerves and I'm fed up and the
holiday hasn’t even started properly. I say we take one of the taxis waiting there in that queue
and be done with it.
Nicolas: You mean a yellow cab?
Sandy: Whatever, just call a taxi up and let’s get to the hotel, it’s on the corner of sixth and
fifty second street…
4. Breakfast at the hotel
2 friends / a couple
breakfast noises, cups and saucers etc
Sandy: So, what do you fancy for breakfast then?
Nicolas: What time is it? Oh no… half past eight already?!
Sandy: Well, yes, I’ve got every intention of making the most of this trip, starting with
ordering a really yummy breakfast!
Nicolas: Okay, okay, what is there? Shall we go down for it or get room service?
Sandy: Oh, let’s do things in style and get room service, at least today… and I’ve got my
heart set on … toast, eggs sunny side up, a regular orange juice and coffee… to go!
Nicolas: You don’t say ‘to go’ like that, it’s only in a take-away that you can say that and..
Sandy: Oh stop being such a spoil sport and choose what you want while I have my shower..
Nicolas: Take a shower...
Sandy: Nicolas!...
Nicolas: Sorry, sorry, I couldn’t resist! Anyway, I’m on for tea, pancakes and… maple syrup!

Phone picked up, ringing tone
Receptionist: Hi, how can I be of service?
Nicolas: I’d like to order breakfast, please.. yes, in our room… number 87… toast, eggs
sunny side up, pancakes and maple syrup, a regular orange juice and a coffee and a cup of
tea…
5. Sightseeing in New York
2 friends / a couple
maps being turned over, guidebook etc
Sandy: Right then, what shall we do today? What do you most want to do?
Nicolas: I don’t really know Sandy; after all, yesterday was pretty tiring, climbing up all
those steps in the Statue of Liberty then braving the cold wind on the boat trip up the
Hudson… I could do with a pretty relaxing day today…
Sandy: What do you say to… a wander around Times Square followed by a look around the
Metropolitan Museum of Art and a lovely meal in, say, Little Italy? There are some fabulous
restaurants mentioned here… page 65…
Nicolas: Okay, I’m on for Times Square and the Metropolitan Museum but I just can’t face
another enormous meal, why don’t we just grab a hot dog or a bagel and come back here to
eat?
Sandy: Sure, that’s fine by me but… couldn’t we eat in Central Park or something, to soak up
the atmosphere…?
Nicolas: Great! Let’s do that!
6. Choosing souvenirs to take back home
2 friends / a couple
street noise, shop till etc
Nicolas: Do we really have to go through this whole ‘souvenir buying’ rigmarole?
Sandy: Just a couple more to buy, I promised the others in the office that I’d get a little
something to brighten up the desks.
Nicolas: Oh, yeah, right, I forgot what whacky workmates you’ve got!
Sandy: Oh stop it; at least I’ve got workmates! I thought I could buy them each a little
Empire State Building or something…
Nicolas: Yeah, why not one that sings the National Anthem or something. or the Pledge of
Allegiance, even better! Ha ha!

Sandy: Hey, you are one funny bloke, aren’t you? I think they’d love something like that!
After all, if you’re going to buy a cheap souvenir, it may as well be tacky and kitsch!
Nicolas: Oh I guess you’re right, I’m sorry. This trip has been wonderful but traipsing round
shops like this is not my idea of fun!
Sandy: I’m not exactly enjoying it either! Okay, I’m going for the Flag of the Stars and
Stripes on a key ring...
Nicolas: Are you sure?
Sandy: Or maybe the American football helmet…. No, I know, I’ll buy one of each key ring :
the flag and the helmet and see who I give them to when I get back!

TEST N°2
Script Loch Ness Monster
Interviewer: Today's programme is about the Loch Ness Monster, in Scotland. Have you heard of
it? Many people believe that there is a huge dinosaur type creature that lives in a lake in Scotland. A
loch. Over the past hundred years, there have been a lot of sightings of Nessie. That's the name of
the monster.
But does Nessie really exist? I asked Nula from our learning English team. She's from Scotland.
Does she think there is a Loch Ness monster? Here's what she said.
Nula: « Well, there is a monster, everyone knows that. That's what Loch Ness is famous for. It's
Nessie, she's ours. »
Interviewer: Thank you Nula. She definitely thinks the Loch Ness monster exists. Nula is proud of
the Scottish monster. « It's ours » she says. Nula, how do you know, where is the proof?
Nula: There are pictures. They are quite grainy, you know, but as far as I am concerned, when I
look at those pictures, that's a monster.
Interviewer: She's from the Scottish city of Glasgow where experts from the museum there have
said that the Loch Ness Monster could have been another animal. What animal? Listen to this
expert.
Expert: I mean, if you ever see images of elephants swimming, they have a trunk that sticks out for
them to breathe, then you have a lump for the head and a lump for the back as well. So a lot of the
sightings of Nessie, the very early ones, they certainly look as if they could be elephants.

TEST N°3
Script : Soap Operas
Watching TV is a very popular pastime in the UK. But what kind of
programmes do British people like to watch? Well, the most-watched TV
programmes every week are very popular dramas that are usually on at
least
four
times
every
week.
They
are
dramas
based
in
one
neighbourhood that try to depict ordinary life in the UK - we call these
dramas 'soap operas' or 'soaps'.
These dramas are often an exaggeration of real life. They are supposed to
represent ordinary lives but, to make them entertaining, lots of dramatic
events, like murders, divorces, affairs etc., all happen probably much
more regularly than they would in a normal neighbourhood.
In the early days of TV, there were often dramas on during the day
Most soap operas these days are shown in the evening. Each show will
have several different storylines that continue over several shows. The
same cast members will appear in every show, too.
There are lots of different soaps on in the UK on different channels but
there are three main popular ones. 'Coronation Street' has been on since
1960. It is set in a suburb of Manchester and it's supposed to represent
working class life in the north of England. Then there's 'Eastenders' which
started in 1985, set in the East End of London, and 'Emmerdale', which is
set on a farm in Yorkshire, in the north of England.
