The results will contribute to the design of an experimental test of a recent prediction concerning collisions of like atoms. Full description The usual vision of elastic atomic collisions could be outdated if recent theoretical predictions [1] were experimentally validated. In any collision between two like atoms, both will follow a curved trajectory under the effect of the attractive dispersion force. During this rotation, they will be subject to a braking torque which will convert part of their kinetic energy into electromagnetic outgoing radiations. The design and implementation of an experimental test need a thorough preparatory study. Among the many possibilities, we will focus on a crossed atomic beams design. This theoretical internship will be devoted to a first work on the electromagnetic emission that should be expected from binary collisions in rare gas media. The case of two dissimilar atoms was already measured in gaseous media [2], with a fair agreement between experimental and theoretical spectra [3]. A first task of the intern will be the understanding of these results on rare gas mixtures. Then these will be used to predict the photon outcome of a single collision of two different atoms in the crossbeams configuration. In a third time, the case of two like atoms will be tackled. A first model, as simple as possible, will be built to obtain preliminary predictions of emitted radiations, and of potential formation of dimers linked by dispersion forces.
