The Danse Danse 2006-2007 season kicks off with the exciting return of Japanese company Sankai Juku! The famous troupe will follow up its memorable performances of Jomon Sho (1987) and Unetsu (1990) at Montreal’s Festival international de nouvelle danse with a long-awaited return courtesy of Danse Danse. Audiences will see Kagemi, a work by founder and artistic director Ushio Amagatsu, who at 57 still dances with the 7-member company. » (Le Monde, Paris) Sankai Juku, founded in 1975 by Ushio Amagatsu performed abroad for the first time at the Nancy International Theatre Festival in 1980. Since then, Sankai Juku has performed in 40 countries and visited more than 700 cities: France, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, Mexico, Spain, Venezuela, Poland, Germany, the U.K., Yugoslavia, Holland, Israel, Finland, Sweden, Canada, the United States, Greece, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Singapore, Denmark, Portugal, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Norway, Indonesia, Colombia, Russia, Hungary, Czech, Ukraine, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Ireland, and Japan. In February 2002, Resonance from far away - Hibiki received the 26th Laurence Olivier Awards in category of “Best New Dance Production.” Ushio Amagatsu, artistic director, has trained in classical as well as modern dance before he worked out his own Butoh. For Amagatsu, Butoh expresses the language of the body. In the 1970s, Amagatsu drew mostly on his own individual experience for inspiration. During the 1980s, much of which he spent working in Europe, the inspiration of his work became more universal. In his works, he presents an abstract vision of the infinite, evolutionary movement, of the relationship of the body to gravity, of relationship of gravity to the earth and the environment. (Dagens Nyheter, Sweden) The North American premiere of Kagemi will be in fall 2006. “BUTOH WITH HUMOR. SANKAI JUKU LIVES UP TO THE EXPECTATIONS AND A BIT MORE.” “EACH MOVEMENT IS A WORK OF ART.” (Aftonbladet, Sweden) In 1980, Sankai Juku was invited to perform in Europe for the first time. They went to the Nancy International Festival in France with the firm conviction that Butoh would be accepted. Since the performance made quite a sensation winning them great popularity there, Avignon Festival officially invited them in the same year. For the next four years, the company remained in Europe and performed in various international festivals; Edinburgh International Festival, Spain Madrid International Festival, International Cervantino Festival, etc. In 1984, they were invited to North America where they made their North American debut at the Toronto International Festival and the L.A. Olympic Arts Festival, and have toured extensively in North America and Canada. Since 1990, Sankai Juku has also performed in such Asian counties as Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, and Indonesia. They also toured successfully in Russia and East European. 3 USHIO AMAGATSU METTEUR EN SCÈNE, CHORÉGRAPHE ET SCÉNOGRAPHE DIRECTOR, CHOREOGRAPHER AND DESIGNER Ushio Amagatsu naît en 1949 à Yokosuka (Japon). » 6 WEN WEI WANG Artistic Director Wen Wei Wang was born in 1965 in mainland China, where he trained and performed as a professional dancer. He moved to Vancouver in 1991. He spent 12 years in Canada as a professional dancer, teacher, and choreographer before forming Wen Wei Dance in 2003. Since the incorporation, the company has presented the Wen Wei Wang’s first full-length work, Tao, in Vancouver and in Columbia, One Man’s… a full-length solo choreographed and performed by Wen Wei Wang, and Snow, another full-length work created at the Banff Center for the Arts. Unbound is a co-production of The CanDance Network Creation Fund, Canada Dance Festival, Dancing on the Edge, Harbourfront Centre, National Arts Centre, The Brian Webb Dance Company, L’Agora de la danse in collaboration with Danse Danse. ABOUT UNBOUND “When I grew up in China there were still women, including my grandmother, whose feet were bound in the old Chinese tradition. My mom told me about her own experience when her parents began the long process of binding her feet to the shape and size considered to be ideal for women of some social standing and to be sexually attractive. Growing up in China I didn't think much about bound feet, regarding it as a custom of the distant past. Several years later, I visited the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto because I have always loved shoes. As part of the research for this new work, I brought several pairs of shoes used by female Chinese Opera performers to make their feet appear to be bound. I asked my three female dancers to try them on and dance in them. The centre of balance was changed considerably. I became fascinated by the way they moved. And then Unbound came.” “MOST OF THE AUDIENCE SAT FROZEN, STUNNED BY THE BEAUTY OF THE ETHEREAL, ELEGANT, EXQUISITE MOVEMENTS THROUGHOUT THE PIECE, AS MORE DANCERS COHESIVELY ENRICHED THE DREAMLIKE AURA” (Dance International, Canada, about Snow) 7 saison 2006. 2007. season Prochain numéro / Next edition LIEUX DE REPRÉSENTATION / VENUES Théâtre Maisonneuve, Place des Arts 175, rue Sainte-Catherine Ouest, Montréal 514-842-2112, 1 866 842-2112 Centre Pierre-Péladeau 300, boul. de Maisonneuve Est, Montréal 514-987-6919 Agora de la danse 840, rue Cherrier, Montréal 514-525-1500 Place-des-Arts Berri-UQAM Sherbrooke Toutes les représentations sont à 20 h / All performances begin at 8:00 p.m. France BALLET PRELJOCAJ Bulletin est publié au moins trois fois par année par / is published at least three times per year by Les Productions LOMA (Danse Danse) 3956, boul.
