Board and volunteer orientation and training
Signe Holstein, CAE
High-performing Boards don't just happen — they are a product of planning and hard work.
Building a strong and effective Board requires an articulated process that is part of the annual
planning cycle with regular review of desired outcomes and effectiveness. Appointing a
Nominating Committee of a few Board members a few months before the annual meeting will
do little to create the type of Board that will move the association forward to best serve its
members and stakeholders.

The Canada Not-for profit Corporations Act replaces Part II of the Canada
Corporations Act. Are you ready?
The new Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act (NFP Act) presents a more modern, flexible and
relevant legal framework for federally-incorporated not-for-profit corporations. The transition
deadline of October 17, 2014 may seem far off, but corporations should be taking action now in
order to meet the transition date.

Why your professional association needs a strategic plan — right now
Association Management Blog
What's an eight-letter word for association management? Strategy. And even though it should be
the driving force behind your professional association's agenda, strategic plans are often lacking
in their most basic elements — including the imperative to stay current. Meg Whitman once
described the evolution of eBay's strategic mission in observing that strategy meetings went from
being held once or twice per year, to being necessary several times a week.

How smart associations grow membership
Association Adviser
As the old Groucho Marx line goes, "I wouldn't belong to any club that would accept me as a
member." But that's not the case in the association world, even as social media, the "free web
economy" and for-profit competitors knock on the door. Nearly 40 per cent of respondents to the
latest Association Adviser eNews poll, say their membership has grown over the past three years.
In fact, nearly one in five respondents (18 per cent) told us they were enjoying membership
increases of more than 10 per cent.

Membership marketing focused on lapsed members
Membership Marketing Blog
In a recent piece, Jeffrey Cufaude wrote about a little experiment he conducted. On purpose, he
let his membership expire with three professional associations to see what would happen. What
he found was that "1 out of 3 slightly acted in a manner consistent with organizations that profess
to be about "community". But since then? Crickets. Silence. Nada."
