In celebration of 150 years since the birth of Suzanne Valadon, the Musée de
Montmartre presents, from the 16th October 2015 to the 15th February 2016, a
flagship exhibition dedicated to Suzanne Valadon (Bessines-sur-Gartempe 1865
- Paris 1938), Maurice Utrillo (Paris 1883 - Dax 1955) and André Utter (Paris
1886 – 1946).
At the turn of the 20th century, the studios of 12-14 Rue Cortot were alive with
artistic talent and creation, home to numerous artists. After having lived here
until 1905 with her first husband, the banker Paul Moussis, Suzanne Valadon
returned to the site in 1912 with her son, Maurice Utrillo and her partner,
André Utter. Despite the frequent arguments with André Utter and the
escapades of her son, Suzanne Valadon spent the most productive years of her
life here. The three soon became known as “le Trio Infernal” and they left their
mark on the art world. From the tensions and passions was born a creative
energy that intensified, blossomed and renewed the work of the three artists
during their time together.
Through a selection of some 150 works, the exhibition showcases the intimacy
and creative complicity of their stay. The works retrace the period between
1912 and 1926 when the trio lived at 12 rue Cortot. A gallery is dedicated to
each artist next to their studio-apartment which was restored and opened to the
public in 2014. A place central to their lives and their creation, the apartment
witnessed their rivalry but also their complimentary nature and the admiration,
and mutal inspiration that the three tenants shared for each other before the
couple separated. Suzanne Valadon then moved to rue Junot with her son,
Maurice Utrillo and Utter stayed until his death in 1948.
The exhibited works originate from the collections of the Société d’Histoire et
d’Archéologie “Le Vieux Montmartre”, but primarily from external loans from
the Centre Pompidou, the Musée d’Art Moderne de la ville de Paris, the Musée
Paul Dini de Villefranche-sur-Saône, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Liège and
Bruxelles, the Petit Palais de Genève et several private collections. Suzanne
Valadon's celebrated works La tireuse de cartes (Petit Palais de Genève) and Le
lancement du filet (Centre Pompidou-MMAM-CCI) are just some of the otable
works on display.
