Qatar Museums Authority QMA Tower is the central administration building Established in 2005, the Qatar Museums Authority (QMA) oversees museum development in Qatar. Managed by a board of trustees headed by Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, QMA strives to become a global leader in the world of museums, art and heritage. As a participant in the Qatar National Vision 2030, QMA’s goals are also closer to home, working toward the development, progress and prosperity of the Qatari people. The Museum of Islamic Art in Doha was the first of QMA’s museums to implement EMu. After mapping and migrating legacy data, operations and access levels were defined, with user privileges set according to museum workflows and staff roles. The Museum’s EMu database is maintained by KE at both the application and system levels with KE scheduling server backups, system upgrades, and monitoring performance. Nine other museums managed by QMA followed a similar implementation process, including The Orientalist Museum, National Museum of Qatar, Qatar Olympic & Sports Museum, Arab Museum of Modern Art, Natural History Museum, Children Museum, Weaponry Museum, International Media Collection. Other museums and collections are set to follow. Throughout implementation, training and ongoing support have been provided by KE in Arabic and English. "We use EMu to find locations of objects and update locations of internal and external movements, provenances and mark objects that require a CITES document." Marie-Astrid Martin, Collection Coordinator at the Museum of Islamic Art As the project progresses and new opportunities presented by EMu become apparent, the scope of work continues to expand. QMA has now seen the introduction of digital asset management tools, metadata extraction technologies, the development of thesauri, the creation of specialised user training to complement museum workflows, and development of data distribution through portals, mobile devices and websites. "The great thing about EMu is that it is highly customisable to each user so I can create shortcuts, specific lists and edit groups to make information easier for users to retrieve." Elena Newman, Super User at the Museum of Islamic Art QMA's EMu team in the Information Management Division has been critical to the success of the project, and is also responsible for organising the first Collections Management Conference in the Middle East. The event was attended by regional and international museum experts and showcased QMA’s world class collections.
