Historical evidence suggests that Dutch bantam chickens originated from the Batam Island in Indonesia and were brought to the
Netherlands by Dutch sailors. The breed was so named because it was perfected in the Netherlands.
Dutch bantams are one of the smallest breed of chicken. These birds lay approximately 160 eggs per year and have a calm temperament.
The Magnetic Hill Zoo has one of the largest collections of Dutch bantams on public display in Canada. The Zoo chose to display
this breed because it most closely resembles, in size and color, one of the only true wild chickens of the world, the red jungle fowl.
The Zoo’s flock originated from birds that were directly imported from Holland.
Selon les faits historiques, les naines hollandaises proviennent de Bantam en Indonésie, d'où les marins néerlandais les ont
transportées aux Pays-Bas. L'espèce a été nommée ainsi puisqu'on en a amélioré l'élevage dans les Pays-Bas.
Les naines hollandaises comptent parmi les espèces de poules les plus petites. Oiseaux à tempérament calme, elles pondent environ 160 œufs par année.
Le Zoo de Magnetic Hill a l'un des ensembles les plus importants de naines hollandaises destinées à la présentation publique au
Canada. Le Zoo a choisi de présenter cette espèce, car c'est elle qui ressemble le plus, en ce qui a trait à la taille et à la couleur, au
seul véritable poulet sauvage du monde : le coq bankiva.
