Season’s Greetings
This year the festive season starts with a bang
on the weekend of November 29th, with events
taking place on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday. First, Charles Banhardt and the choir of
St. Andrew’s United Church will be presenting
‘A Journey into the Romantic Genre’ on Friday
November 29th at 7:00 pm in the church. This
is the second of what is becoming an eagerly
anticipated event, as last year it was a sell-out.
Tickets are $10, and can be purchased from the
Church Office (613 833-2604) or (if there are
any left by then) at the door.
Then on Saturday November 30th the Cumberland Heritage Village Museum will be opening its Vintage Village of Lights. The museum
grounds open at 3:00 pm, and the lights over the
buildings, trees and hedges all around the museum will be switched on at darkness. Visitors
are invited to explore and enjoy holiday traditions from olden times in the enchanted setting
of the museum grounds from the 3:00 pm opening to the 8:00 pm closing each Friday, Saturday
and Sunday from then until December 22nd.
Visits will cost the usual $7:00 for adults, $5:00
for children (under 12) and $18:00 for a family.
And to round out this weekend the Capital City
Church (just east of Cardinal Creek on Old
Montreal Road) will be hosting a concert by
Charmaine and Jason Brown on the Sunday
December 1st . This concert, which will start
at 7:00 pm, is billed as a ‘Winter Wonderland
Christmas Concert’ and will feature seasonal
carols. Admission is free.
Joyeuses fêtes
Cette année, la saison des fêtes commencera en
force la fin de semaine du 29 novembre avec des
événements le vendredi, le samedi et le dimanche.
Tout d’abord, Charles Banhardt et la chorale de
l’église unie St. Andrew’s présenteront «A Journey
into the Romantic Genre» le vendredi 29 novembre à 19h00 à l’église. Ce concert est devenu un
événement très attendu, et il était complet l’an
dernier. Les billets sont 10 $ et peuvent être achetés
auprès du bureau de l’église (613 833-2604) ou à la
porte (s’il en reste).
Puis, le samedi 30 novembre, le Musée-village du
patrimoine de Cumberland dévoilera le village
ancien des lumières. Le musée ouvrira à 15h00, et
les lumières sur les bâtiments, les arbres et les haies
autour du musée seront allumées à la tombée de la
nuit. Les visiteurs sont invités à découvrir et apprécier les traditions des fêtes des temps anciens dans
le décor enchanteur du musée, de 15 h 00 à 20 h
00 chaque vendredi, samedi et dimanche du 30
novembre au 22 décembre. Les visites sont au coût
habituel de 7 $ par adulte, 5 $ par enfant (de moins
de 12 ans) et 18 $ par famille.
Finalement, le dimanche 1er décembre l’église
Capital City (à l’est de Cardinal Creek sur le chemin Old Montreal) sera l’hôte d’un concert donné
par Charmaine et Jason Brown. Cet événement,
qui débutera à 19h00, est présenté comme un
concert de Noël de genre « Winter Wonderland »
et mettra en vedette des chants de Noël s. L’entrée
est gratuite.

Christmas Farmer’s
Market and Breakfast
with Santa
On December 7th the Farmer’s Market will be
holding its annual Christmas Market from 9 am to
4 pm. This year 70 local vendors will showcase
their talents, squeezing into the three halls at
the RJ Kennedy Community Centre on Dunning
Road or into St Andrew’s United Church on Old
Montreal Road, (though 4 of these 70 will brave
the elements outside the Community Centre).
At this market there will be a wide variety of arts
and crafts on offer, as well as local food products
such as preserves, jams and honey. And if you
get lucky you might even win one of the numerous Raffle prizes that are made up from donations from the vendors. All proceeds from the
Raffle Table will go to the Orléans-Cumberland
Community Resource Centre
But you should start your day with the Cumberland Lions Club at their fourth annual ‘Breakfast
with Santa’, served from 8am to noon in Maple
Hall on Old Montreal Road. The cost is $7.00 for
adults, and children (twelve and under) free with
a donation of a gift or a non-perishable food item.
In the spirit of seasonal giving the Lions will be
accepting gifts and donations on behalf of the Orléans-Cumberland Community Resource Centre.
So families can make a full day of it in the village
– have breakfast at the Lions Club, spend the
morning reviewing all the offerings at the Market,
eat lunch at either of the Market locations, in the
afternoon buy the selected items (gifts for almost
every taste are available) and then go down to
the Museum to enjoy its traditions and the awesome lights.
Marché de Noël et petit déjeuner avec le Père Noël
Le 7 décembre, le marché frais de Cumberland présentera son marché de Noël de 9 h 00
à 16 h 00. Cette année, 70 marchands locaux
s’entasseront dans les trois salles du Centre
communautaire RJ Kennedy sur le chemin Dunning ou dans l’église unie Saint Andrew’s sur le
chemin Old Montreal pour présenter leurs talents
(4 de ces 70 marchands seront à l’extérieur du
centre communautaire). Il y aura une grande
variété d’art et d’artisanat, ainsi que des produits
alimentaires locaux tels que des conserves, des
confitures et du miel. Si vous êtes chanceux,
vous pourriez gagner un des nombreux prix de
tombola composés de dons des marchands.
Tous les profits de la tombola iront au Centre de
ressources communautaires Orléans-Cumberland.
Mais vous devrez commencer votre journée
chez le Club Lions de Cumberland qui offrira son
quatrième ‘Petit-déjeuner avec le Père Noël’,
lequel sera servi de 8 h jusqu’à midi dans la
Salle Maple sur le chemin Old Montreal.
Le coût sera de 7 $ par adulte, mais les enfants
(de 12 ans ou moins) pourront manger gratuitement s’ils font don d’un cadeau ou d’un produit
alimentaire non périssable. Dans l’esprit de la
saison le Club Lions acceptera tous les dons et
les remettra au Centre de ressources communautaires Orléans-Cumberland.
Les familles pourront donc passer la journée
complète au village : manger leur petit déjeuner
au Club Lions, passer la matinée à découvrir les
produits au marché, prendre une pause pour le
déjeuner à l’une ou l’autre des endroits du marché, faire l’achat des articles choisis en aprèsmidi (des cadeaux pour presque tous les goûts
seront disponibles), puis descendre au musée
pour profiter de ses traditions et des lumières

Events in the New Year
Événements dans la nouvelle année
Once the festive Christmas season is over we have to
endure the hard slog until spring and the Easter break.
But in 2014 this will be particularly hard, as Easter does
not come until April 20th period a number of events are
planned to keep your mind off the hard weather (unless
you are a fervent fan of winter, for whom this is already
the best season).
Une fois les festivités de la saison des fêtes terminées, nous
devons endurer l’hiver jusqu'au printemps et aux vacances
de Pâques. Cela sera particulièrement difficile en 2014,
puisque Pâques ne sera que le 20 avril, presque aussi tard
que possible. Plusieurs événements sont prévus lors de cette
période pour vous distraire du temps froid (sauf pour ceux
qui aiment beaucoup l'hiver, pour qui c'est déjà la meilleure
saison).
First, to kick of the New Year, we will have a good old
Country Hoedown in the RJ Kennedy Community Centre on January 11th (to give you a week to recover from
your holiday cheer). This will feature a chili meal and
country music provided by our popular DJ James Virgin.

Then in February Winterfest will offer a full weekend of
activities from the 14th we will hold the Euchre Tournament at Maple Hall, with cash prizes. The Saturday starts
with breakfast in Maple Hall with the Lions Club, in the
afternoon there will be family skating on the outdoor
arena mid-day, giving way to shinny later in the afternoon, and in the evening we will have our traditional
Dinner/Dance and Silent Auction at the RJ Kennedy
Community Centre. On the Sunday we will offer fun and
games at the Cumberland Heritage Village Museum.
Pour commencer la nouvelle année, nous aurons un « hoedown » country au Centre communautaire RJ Kennedy le
11 janvier (cela vous laisse une semaine pour vous remettre
des fêtes). Cela comprendra un repas de chili et la musique
country du populaire DJ James Virgin. Pour plus de détails,
veuillez vous référer à l'invitation à la dernière page de ce
numéro.
Puis, du 14 au 16 février, le Fest’Hiver offrira une fin de
semaine complète d'activités. Le vendredi soir, il y aura
un tournoi de « euchre » à la salle Maple, avec des prix en
argent. L’horaire du samedi débute avec un petit déjeuner
dans la salle Maple avec le Club Lions. Dans l'après-midi, il
y aura du patinage en famille et du hockey sur la patinoire
extérieure. En soirée, il y aura le traditionnel souper dansant et l’encan silencieux au Centre communautaire RJ
Kennedy. Le dimanche, il y aura du plaisir et des jeux au
Musée-village du patrimoine de Cumberland.
And to bridge the gap from then until Easter, we will have
a St Patrick’s Day Pub Night on Saturday March 15th
Maple Hall. Appropriate music is being organized for all
the ‘Irish’ in Cumberland.
Finalement, nous aurons une soirée pour célébrer la SaintPatrick le samedi 15 mars à la salle Maple. Il y aura de la
musique festive pour tous les ‘Irlandais’ de Cumberland.
As the plans for these events are completed we will post
the details on our website (cumberlandvillage.ca), so visit
it from time to time to see what is going on. We hope that
these events will help you ignore or overcome the seasonal
blues coming from the shortage of sunlight.

While walking around the community it is unfortunately evident that we need to remember that
ditches are not trash cans and that the City’s ‘poop
and scoop’ bylaws do apply in the rural areas. Please
keep our community neat and tidy.
En se promenant dans la communauté, nous devons
nous rappeler que les fossés ne sont pas des poubelles
et que les règlements de la ville en ce qui a trait aux
chiens (et l’obligation de ramasser leurs excréments)
s'appliquent dans les zones rurales. S'il vous plaît
