Networks, Exchanges and Conflicts
in the circum-Mediterranean Area
The conception of the Mediterranean area as an immense network of regular and
casual connections overland, by sea and by air, in which towns are the vital hubs of
commercial, cultural and religious exchanges, is an attractive and often repeated idea.
Historians and anthropologists have stressed connections and exchanges in order to
validate the notion of the Mediterranean as a region of common cultural features.
However the Mediterranean is also an area of confrontation, conflict, tension, negative
reciprocity and difference.
Our meeting aims to explore these three elements (Networks, Exchanges and
Conflicts) and their intersections in the circum-Mediterranean area.
The Athens seminar comprises four sessions:
