INSTITUTE FOR NEOHELLENIC RESEARCH NATIONAL HELLENIC RESEARCH FOUNDATION 48, Vassileos Constantinou avenue, 116 35 Athens, Greece THEMATIC NETWORK OF EUROPEAN SOCIAL SCIENCE RESEARCH CENTRES ON THE MEDITERRANEAN AREA (REMSH) Athens Seminar (26-28 May 2005) Networks, Exchanges and Conflicts in the circum-Mediterranean Area PROGRAMME Contact: Evridiki Sifneos: [email protected] Ourania Polycandrioti: [email protected] 2 Networks, Exchanges and Conflicts in the circum-Mediterranean Area The conception of the Mediterranean area as an immense network of regular and casual connections overland, by sea and by air, in which towns are the vital hubs of commercial, cultural and religious exchanges, is an attractive and often repeated idea. Historians and anthropologists have stressed connections and exchanges in order to validate the notion of the Mediterranean as a region of common cultural features. However the Mediterranean is also an area of confrontation, conflict, tension, negative reciprocity and difference. Our meeting aims to explore these three elements (Networks, Exchanges and Conflicts) and their intersections in the circum-Mediterranean area. The Athens seminar comprises four sessions: Thursday, 26th May 2005 20.00-20.30 Registration of the participants at the National Hellenic Research Foundation (48 Vassileos Constantinou avenue, entrance from Vassileos Georgiou road, main entrance hall) 20.30-21.30 Reception, followed by a short musical program, with songs from the Mediterranean area.
