First cultivated by pre-columbian Indians on the mountaintops in the high Andes of Peru, the potato has undergone a most extraordinary voyage over the millennia to become one of the most important food crops known to humanity. After the Spanish conquest of Peru and the introduction of the potato to the Western world, the tuber was feared, mistrusted, disdained and ridiculed. The potato quickly rose to power in Europe and the Americas. The potato was the food of the slaves who worked the silver and gold mines of South America, the food of the negro slave in the American colonies, and was the staple food during the Industrial Revolution. Without the potato, none of these exploitative endeavors may have taken place. Potatoes have caused population explosions all over the world since its introduction, and will be the first vegetable taken into space to colonize the beyond. Axomama's papas tells the tale of the rise and fall of western civilization through the eyes of the potato, or papas, as created by the great Inca potato goddess, Axomama. The tale begins in outer space with a Nasa astronaut cultivating his potatoes in his space station. Zoom to the Nazca lines, the enigmatic linear formations which can only be seen from space. These drawing preserved over thousands of years were created by the Nazca people, who were also the first cultivators of the potato and firm believers in mummifying their dead. The genesis of the potato will be told by Peruvian mummies, whom with their with dehydrated corpses, cranial bindings and trepination wounds, mimic the conservation and reproduction techniques of the potato. They sit, buried in silence beneath the earth of the arid windy plateaus of Nazca. They are the original Mr. Potato head family. Arrival of Pizarro, a kind of conquistador in a Ronald McDonald costume. He is flanked by his henchmen, whom also reek of capitalism, bad taste and french fry grease. The potato is taken to Europe and beyond. We meet Auguste Parmentier and learn of his miraculous cure for the famine in France with the potato. Marie Antoinette's head rolls off the guillotine block with a potato flower in her hair. The tuber is embraced and cultivated beyond reason. Enter the potato famine in Ireland, which because of its disasterous outcome, gave rise to the beginning of the insecticdes industry and the genetically modified spud. Its rhizomatic family tree becomes exploited beyond expectation. Without the potato, the earth would not have so many people who need the potato. Meanwhile Axomama is still buried in the dirt on her plateau, witnessing the earth surface transform thanks to the nourishment provided by her progeny. The Nazca lines glow and illuminate a runway for for some kind giant spaceship to land.
