charged in the centre with a beaver Or and edged
by a riband Azure which is itself edged and
inscribed with the words "ENGINEERS • GENIE •
CANADA" Or below upon a scroll Azure edged
and inscribed with the word "UBIQUE" Or the
whole ensigned by the Royal Crown proper.
Description
À l'intérieur d'une couronne de feuilles d'érable
d'or, un tourteau portant au centre un castor d'or et
bordé d'un ruban d'azur, lui-même bordé d'or et
portant l'inscription « ENGINEERS • GÉNIE •
CANADA » d'or. En-dessous, sur un listel d'azure
bordé d'or, l'inscription « UBIQUE » d'or. Le tout
timbré de la couronne royale au naturel.
Symbolism
The beaver has long been used by engineers as it
is an animal noted for its skill in building.
"ENGINEERS • GENIE • CANADA" is a form of
the branch title and "UBIQUE" is the motto of the
branch.
Symbolisme
Le thème du castor est utilisé depuis longtemps
par le corps du génie en raison des ses talents de
bâtisseur. « ENGINEERS • GENIE • CANADA »
est une variante du nom de la branche, et
« UBIQUE » en est la devise.

The motto "UBIQUE" was granted as an honorary distinction to
'take the place of all past and future battle honours and
distinctions gained in the field'.1
La devise « UBIQUE » est une distinction honorifique qui

bataille antérieurs et futurs pouvant être reçus en
campagne ».1

The Military Engineering Branch originated on
1 July 1903, when the 'Canadian Engineers Corps'
of the Permanent Active Militia was authorized to
be formed.2 It was redesignated 'The Royal
Canadian Engineers' on 1 February 1904.3 Non
Permanent Active Militia engineer companies had
existed at least as early as 1860,4 and they were
collectively referred to as 'Canadian Engineers'
from 1 August 1904.5 The Permanent component
was redesignated 'The Corps of Royal Canadian
Engineers';6 and the Non Permanent component
'The Corps of Canadian Engineers' on
1 March 1932.7 The Non Permanent component
was redesignated, and the entire corps designated
as 'The Corps of Royal Canadian Engineers' on
29 April 1936.8 It was redesignated 'The Corps of
Royal
Canadian
Engineers'
on
29 September 1952. 9 The Corps was
amalgamated after Unification with Royal
Canadian Air Force construction engineer
personnel to form the 'Military Engineering Branch'
on 27 August 1971.12
La Branche du Génie vit le jour le 1er juillet 1903,
lorsque le « Canadian Engineers Corps » de la
Milice active permanente fut autorisé.2 Il fut
rebaptisé « The Royal Canadian Engineers » le
1er février 1904.3 Les compagnies de génie de la
Milice active non permanente existent depuis au
moins 1860,4 et elles furent collectivement
reconnues et baptisées « Canadian Engineers » à
partir du 1er août 1904.5 La composante
permanente fut rebaptisée « The Corps of Royal
Canadian Engineers »;6 et la composante non
permanente « The Corps of Canadian Engineers »
le 1er mars 1932.7 La composante non permanente
fut rebaptisée et le corps entier fut baptisé « The
Corps of Royal Canadian Engineers »
le 29 avril 1936.8 Il fut rebaptisé : « The Corps of
Royal Canadian Engineers » le
29 septembre 1952;9 en français, « Génie royal
canadien » le 7 février 1955;10 et « Corps du génie
royal canadien » le 18 avril 1955.11 Suite à
l'unification, le corps se fusionna avec le personnel
du génie de l'Aviation royale du Canada pour
mettre sur pied la « Military Engineering Branch »
le 27 août 1971.12 Elle fut rebaptisée en français :
« Service du génie militaire » le 14 janvier 1972;13
« Branche du Génie » le 12 juillet 1985.14
