Managing an Arthouse cinema in 2008 is a fascinating job, but a tough and risky business. The competition of blockbusters, TV, DVD and internet, legal or pirated, is more than harsh. The market position of quality cinema and European film is everyday more vulnerable. The CICAE offers the emerging European generation a very pragmatic training, based on crossed experience and networking, to gain more skills in the field of arthouse cinema exhibition. It has structured networks in Belgium, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy and Switzerland. It is present in Austria, Bosnia, Cyprus, Denmark, England, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Portugal and Spain. More than half of the 400 EUROPA CINEMAS theatres in Europe are affiliated to the CICAE. Membership also includes Algeria, Chile, Equator, Japan, Lebanon, Mexico, Morocco, Peru, USA, and Venezuela. THE SUMMER UNIVERSITY FOR ARTHOUSE EXHIBITORS The mission of the CICAE is to promote quality films, from all countries, in all countries. It fosters art cinemas networks, acts towards institutions to defend them, circulates films across borders, trains young art cinema managers. The 'structured' network opportunities were really useful and got us all to debate and share experiences. The 10 days were reinvigorating and has sent me back to work with fresh eyes. It was really fascinating to get a wider view of the international film industry and to hear the pressures felt in other countries and also those by non-exhibitors such as distributors.
