one contributes to the excellent care delivered at The Montreal Children’s
Hospital and is made possible thanks to the support of a community that

Au cours de la dernière année, nos bénévoles ont travaillé d’arrache-pied

Il y a un an, nous ne savions pas qui construirait le nouveau Centre
universitaire de santé McGill (CUSM), dont fera partie le nouveau Children.
Depuis, beaucoup d’événements sont survenus : le consortium dirigé
par SNC-Lavalin a été retenu, des contrats ont été signés, on a bouclé les
questions financières, le gouvernement a émis les décrets nécessaires,
l’inauguration des travaux du CUSM a été célébrée le 1er avril, 106 enfants
de deux écoles ont célébré l’inauguration du nouveau Children à leur façon
le 7 septembre, et maintenant, les travaux ont véritablement commencé
sur le site.
One year ago we did not know who would build the new McGill University
Health Centre (MUHC), including the new Children's. Since then, a great
deal has happened: the consortium headed by SNC-Lavalin won the
competition, contracts have been signed, financial close has occurred, the
government has issued the necessary decrees, groundbreaking for the
MUHC was celebrated on April 1, 106 children from two schools had fun
on September 7 during the groundbreaking for The Children's, and now
work on the site has actually begun in earnest.
Il est impressionnant de voir une armée de pelles mécaniques remplir
un convoi sans fin de gigantesques camions chargés de terre (près de
1 000 chargements par jour !) et creuser un trou d’une profondeur de
quatre étages qui contiendra les fondations et le stationnement souterrain.
L’envergure du projet est à couper le souffle ! Des pieux sont présentement
installés sur l’assise rocheuse ; ils permettront d’ancrer la structure du
bâtiment. Les fondations de béton seront coulées avant la fin de l’année.
Alors que se déroulent ces travaux, un grand nombre de groupes de travail
formés d’employés se réunissent encore pour finaliser le concept des amé
nagements intérieurs. Imagination, expertise et rigueur s’unissent pour créer
le meilleur des centres modernes de soins pour enfants et adultes, ainsi que
l’institut de recherche attaché à un hôpital le plus prometteur au Canada.
On peut désormais sentir la fébrilité qui se propage dans notre commu
nauté. On peut voir de nos propres yeux la naissance d’un établissement
qui servira notre communauté pendant plus d’un siècle. En contribuant
à la campagne Les meilleurs soins pour les enfants, nous pouvons tous et
toutes participer à cet héritage fabuleux.

It certainly is impressive to see the army of diggers fill a never-ending line
of huge trucks with earth (about 1000 loads per day!) in order to make a
four-story deep place for the foundations and the parking garage. The size
of it all is quite breathtaking! Piles are being driven down to bedrock in order
to anchor the building. Concrete foundations will be poured before the end
of the year.
While this physical work is going on, a large number of staff work groups
are meeting again to finalize the design of the interior arrangements. Imagination, expertise and rigour are meeting to create the best new centre for the
care of children and of adults, as well as the largest and most successful
hospital-based research institute in Canada.
The excitement is now palpable and building in our community. Everyone
can now see with their own eyes the emergence of a facility that will serve
our community for over a century. By contributing to The Best Care for
Children Campaign we can all become part of this fantastic legacy.

L’enthousiasme continue de grandir alors que la réalité du nouvel Hôpital
de Montréal pour enfants (HME) au sein du campus du Centre universitaire
de santé McGill (CUSM) se rapproche. Plusieurs étapes emballantes ont été
franchies au cours de l’année :
•
Le 1er avril, le premier ministre du Québec Jean Charest, en présence
de la présidente du Conseil du Trésor Monique Gagnon-Tremblay, du
ministre de la Santé et des Services sociaux, le Dr Yves Bolduc, du maire
de Montréal Gérald Tremblay ainsi que de dirigeants, de membres du
personnel, de patients et d’amis du CUSM, a lancé officiellement le
projet Glen. Le consortium choisi pour développer et assurer le maintien
de ce projet prépondérant est le Groupe immobilier santé McGill (GISM),
dirigé par SNC-Lavalin et Innisfree Ltd.
•
Le 15 juillet, une entente financière a été conclue entre le gouvernement
et le GISM, après l’adoption par le gouvernement du Québec d’un décret
autorisant le CUSM à signer un contrat d’association avec le GISM pour
la construction sur le campus Glen.
•
Le 15 juillet, l’organisation des Shriners a confirmé qu’elle se joindrait à
l’HME et au CUSM sur le site Glen et dévoilait le concept préliminaire
de son nouvel hôpital. Cette décision illustre le renforcement du lien de
longue date qui nous unit aux professionnels de cet établissement et à
ses patients.
•
Le 7 septembre, l’épouse du premier ministre du Québec, Mme Michèle
Dionne, et le ministre de la Santé et des Services sociaux, le Dr Yves
Bolduc ont assisté à la première pelletée de terre officielle du nouveau
Children. La cérémonie a réuni le nombre symbolique de 106 enfants
pour illustrer l’âge réel du Children. Équipés de pelles, ces jeunes se sont
joints à nous pour un événement mémorable qui a marqué un tournant
de notre histoire.
Le choix du GISM en tant que partenaire a donné le coup d’envoi à 18 mois
de planification fonctionnelle intense pour le nouveau Children et le CUSM
du site Glen. Le début des travaux de construction et la finalisation du design
se font simultanément. La Fondation de l’HME rendra ce projet possible grâce
au succès de la campagne Les meilleurs soins pour les enfants, présidée
par M. Marc Courtois.
Nous remercions la Fondation de l’HME non seulement pour son appui
aux tâches quotidiennes essentielles de l’Hôpital, mais également pour
l’acquisition de pièces d’équipement essentielles et pour les sommes indispensables à la rénovation de nos installations vieillissantes. L’appareil d’IRM
peropératoire, une première dans le domaine de la pédiatrie canadienne, est
maintenant installé et pleinement fonctionnel sur le site actuel ; il sera transféré au nouvel hôpital. Je suis également reconnaissant de l’aide apportée
à notre direction clinique pour l’innovation et la mise sur pied de nouveaux
programmes.
Je suis très fier des membres extraordinaires du personnel professionnel et
non professionnel du Children qui dispensent des services exceptionnels à
notre vaste population multiculturelle. Nous adressons nos remerciements
les plus sincères à la Fondation de l’HME pour son leadership éclairé et son
personnel hautement professionnel, ainsi qu’à ses nombreux donateurs et
bénévoles qui nous permettent d’atteindre nos objectifs stratégiques. Grâce
à cette communauté d’engagement et de dévouement, nous sommes
assurés de remplir notre mandat d’excellence, tant pour ce qui est des soins
offerts aux malades, que pour l’enseignement et la recherche en pédiatrie.
Notre vision, c’est la vôtre : favoriser l’accès à un avenir en santé à tous nos
jeunes malades et aider leur famille à faire en sorte que leurs enfants atteignent leurs objectifs personnels.
A year of victories
worth celebrating
The excitement continues to mount as the reality of a new Montreal
Children’s Hospital (MCH) within the campus of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) becomes ever closer. Several exciting
milestones have taken place this past year:
•
On April 1, the Premier of Quebec, Jean Charest, accompanied
by President of the Treasury Board Monique Gagnon-Tremblay,
Minister of Health and Social Services Dr. Yves Bolduc, the
Mayor of Montreal Gérald Tremblay, and MUHC officials, staff,
patients and friends gave the Glen project its official launch. The
consortium selected to develop and maintain this pivotal project
is the McGill Health Infrastructure Group (MHIG), led by SNCLavalin and Innisfree Ltd.
•
On July 15, financial closure with the government and MHIG
was achieved, following passage by the Government of Quebec
of the decree authorizing the MUHC to enter into a partnership
agreement with MHIG for construction of the Glen Campus.
•
On July 15, the Shriners organization confirmed that they will
join the MCH and MUHC on the Glen site and unveiled the preliminary hospital design for their new hospital. This represents
the strengthening of our longstanding ties with this institution’s
professionals and patients.
•
On September 7, the official groundbreaking for the new
Children’s took place, presided over by Mme Michèle Dionne,
wife of Premier Jean Charest, and Health Minister Dr. Yves
Bolduc. A symbolic 106 children with their shovels, representing
the current age of The Children’s, joined us on this historic
occasion – a truly memorable event.
We thank the MCH Foundation not only for its support of essential
daily hospital functions, but also for major equipment acquisitions,
and for providing the essential capital for renovation of our progressively aging buildings. The Intra-operative MRI, a first for Canadian
children, has been installed and is fully operational on the current
site; it will be transferred to the new Children’s. I also acknowledge
the support provided to our clinical leadership for innovation and
development of new programs.
I am very proud of the extraordinary professional and non professional staff of The Children’s that provide exceptional services to
our large multicultural population. We sincerely thank the MCH
Foundation, with its stellar leadership and highly professional staff,
as well as the many donors and volunteers that help us attain our
strategic goals. This community of commitment and dedication
ensures that we achieve our mandate to provide excellence in
patient care, teaching and child health research. Our vision is your
vision: to facilitate the attainment of a healthy future for our patients
and to support their families as they help their children achieve their
individual goals.
The selection of the MHIG Partnership has kicked off 18 months of
intense functional planning for the new Children’s and the MUHC
on the Glen, with the start of actual construction occurring while
final design is being completed. The very successful Best Care
for Children Campaign undertaken by the MCH Foundation and
chaired by Marc Courtois will help to ensure this reality.

l’ampleur des travaux qui s’y déroulent. Maintenant que sa construction est
entamée, laissez-moi vous parler de quelques-uns des avantages du nouvel
Hôpital de Montréal pour enfants du Campus Glen.
If you have passed by the Glen Campus recently, you have surely noticed
the major scope and size of the work currently being undertaken. Now that
construction has started, I would like to highlight some of the advantages
presented by a new Montreal Children’s Hospital on the Glen Campus.

de l’Institut thoracique de Montréal, d’un Centre du cancer et d’un Institut
de recherche, et sa proximité aux installations pour adultes nous p

The new Children’s will be built alongside the Royal Victoria Hospital, the
Montreal Chest Institute, a Cancer Centre and the MUHC Research Institute.
Its proximity to the adult facilities will improve the quality of care and well
being of our young patients.
Le département d’obstétrique de l’Hôpital Royal Victoria sera établi sur
le même étage et donnera un accès direct à celui des soins intensifs néo
natals du Children. Ainsi, un nouveau-né éprouvant de graves difficultés dès
sa naissance sera « presque déjà » chez nous. Les adolescents que nous
soignons depuis des années, voire depuis leur petite enfance, pourront vivre
une transition en douceur vers les soins et les installations pour adultes.
Notre position à côté de l’Hôpital Shriners pour enfants permettra à nos
chirurgiens orthopédiques de mieux gérer leur charge de travail. Et que dire
des équipements de pointe, tels que notre salle d’imagerie par résonnance
magnétique peropératoire, qui pourront désormais être partagés pour
réduire les listes d’attente ?
En appuyant la campagne Les meilleurs soins pour les enfants, c’est à la
concrétisation de tous ces avantages que vous contribuez, et à bien plus
encore.

The Department of Obstetrics at the new Royal Victoria will be located
on the same floor as and have direct access to The Children’s Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit. This way, a newborn with complications will receive the
care needed almost instantly. Adolescents receiving long term follow-up at
The Children’s will undergo an easier transition to care in the adult facilities.
Our position adjacent to the Shriners Hospital for Children will allow our
orthopedic surgeons to manage their case loads more efficiently. State-ofthe-art equipment, such as our intra-operative MRI, can be shared between
facilities, thereby reducing waiting lists.

The Budget Committee, chaired by Mr. Timothy E.
Price, plays a key role in establishing the annual
budget and in monitoring the Foundation’s
performance.
The Audit Committee, chaired by Mr. Claude
Bédard, works with external auditors, Samson
Bélair/Deloitte & Touche s.e.n.c.r.l. , and is mandated to oversee the organization’s financial
and control systems, to review and recommend
for Board approval the annual financial statements, as well as to recommend appropriate
accounting policies and practices.
The Investment Committee, chaired by Mr. David
M. McEntyre, ensures that funds are prudently
invested and well managed by providing advice
on investment policies and making investment
decisions on behalf of the Foundation.

En 2009-2010, alors que le Québec se relève d’une période économique
difficile, les revenus de dons de la Fondation dépassent 19,5 M$ et sont très
près des 19,9 M$ recueillis au cours de l’année précédente. Ces résultats
démontrent encore une fois la grande générosité et le dévouement de nos
donateurs.
Cette année, la bonne performance des marchés financiers se reflète dans
nos résultats puisque nous constatons un gain non réalisé sur nos placements de 6,3 M$ qui vient largement compenser les pertes réalisées au
cours des deux dernières années. Cependant, la baisse des taux de rendement sur les marchés financiers fait en sorte que nos revenus de placement,

Toujours fidèle à ses engagements, la Fondation a déboursé cette année

besoins urgents. Le financement des travaux de rénovation et de l’achat

Le contrôle des frais d’administration de la Fondation est une priorité depuis
toujours. En 2009-2010, des mesures exceptionnelles ont été prises et ont
permis à la Fondation de réduire ses frais d’administration de 5 %.
Bien que nous ne puissions ignorer les besoins de notre Hôpital existant,
nous devons nous tourner vers l’avenir, soit la construction du nouveau
Children. La campagne Les meilleurs soins pour les enfants se poursuit et
nous y mettons toutes nos énergies. Merci à l’avance de renouveler votre

While Quebec was recovering from the economic downturn in 2009–2010,
donations to the Foundation exceeded $19.5 million, an amount close to
the previous year’s total of $19.9 million. Once again, this figure is testimony
to the exceptional generosity and commitment of our donors.
This year our results reflect the strong performance of the financial markets;
we recorded an unrealized gain of $6.3 million on our investments, to a large
extent making up for losses incurred over the last two years. However, in
2009–2010, aside from the unrealized gain on our investments, net investment income declined from $1.9 million to $1 million.
To honour its commitment to the Hospital, this year the Foundation contributed
a total of $18.2 million to various projects including the acquisition of medical
equipment, renovations, teaching, and funding research programs, in addition
to other urgent needs. The financing of renovations and the purchase of equipment related to the intra-operative magnetic resonance imaging (iMRI) project,
which was completed this year, represented $5.3 million of the $18.2 million
total contribution.
Controlling administrative costs has always been one of the Foundation’s
priorities. In 2009–2010 the Foundation therefore adopted special
measures which enabled it to reduce these costs by 5%.
While we cannot ignore the current needs of the existing Hospital we must
also look ahead toward the future, to the construction of the new C
hildren’s.

Opération Enfant Soleil :
un partenaire fidèle à nos
petits patients
Nous sommes très reconnaissants envers Opération Enfant
Soleil pour son engagement exceptionnel et l’aide qu’elle apporte
à nos enfants malades. Un partenaire des plus fidèles, Opération
Enfant Soleil s’est engagée à verser 15 millions de dollars pour
la construction du futur Hôpital de Montréal pour enfants du
Campus Glen. Une part de cet argent (5 M$) a déjà permis
l’acquisition d’un appareil peropératoire d’imagerie par résonance
magnétique (IRM), une première pour un hôpital pédiatrique au
Canada. Ce nouvel appareil d’IRM, qui sera déménagé dans le
nouveau Children, est un système d’imagerie chirurgicale ultraspécialisé. Il permet d’obtenir des images d’un malade pendant
une intervention, directement dans la salle d’opération. Grâce à lui,
nos neurochirurgiens seront encore plus efficaces, et dans bien

Opération Enfant Soleil:
A partner devoted to our
young patients
We extend our deepest gratitude to Opération Enfant Soleil
for its exceptional commitment to the wellbeing of our patients.
One of our most loyal partners, Opération Enfant Soleil made a
$15 million pledge to the future Montreal Children’s Hospital on
the Glen Campus. A large part of this total ($5 million) was desig
nated to the acquisition of an intra-operative magnetic resonance
imaging (iMRI) suite, a first in a pediatric hospital in Canada. The
iMRI, which will be moved to the new Children’s, is a highly specialized surgical imaging system that allows images of a patient to
be taken during surgery – right in the operating room. It will allow
our neurosurgeons to be even more efficient, and many cases
that would have otherwise required multiple surgeries, may be
treated in one single operation.
