Entries are coming in! Ribbons and Birds
have been ordered! The club sponsored lunch
for Sunday has been decided (Pulled Pork
sandwiches, chips, apple, drink.) Judges have
their pencils sharpened! All that‟s needed is
you!
We‟ll be helping the GSP Club get the tent set
up on Friday. The water tank will be there.
We‟ll need help getting camp set up, including the bird field set up, putting a water tub at
the bird field, setting up the “gunners” area,
and any other little things that need to get
done.
There will be a “Hospitality” Saturday night
at Karen‟s house. We will arrange for pizzas,
fix up a salad and garlic bread. Please bring
your own choice of libation. It‟s only a tad
more than a mile from the grounds to Karen‟s.

MINUTES OF THE MEETING
The meeting was called to order
by Vice-President Dave Harris at
11:30AM. The meeting was
held at Leff-T‟s Steakhouse in
Dewey. In attendance were Jim
Cassara, Jeanne Cassara, Pam
Baker-Harris, and Karen Nelsen.
The minutes of the last meeting, the Annual Meeting,
were approved as published in the July issue of the newsletter.
In the absence of the President, there was no report.
The Secretary reported that Jerry Rosenberg has recently
been diagnosed with a form of leukemia and is being treated at a facility in Phoenix.
The Treasurer reported a balance of $1100 in our checking
account. There are three outstanding checks.
Reports of Committees: The Hunt Test took up most of
the discussion of the meeting. Karen brought along AKC
paperwork and rule books to review with those in attendance. Chairman, Jim Cassara, went over what we need to
do as far as setting up the courses, back course birds, bird
field, food etc.
It was decided that we would have pulled pork sandwiches
which Pam and Jeanne would take care of. Jim would look
into getting a 30 cup coffee maker. He‟ll also take care of
getting plates and utensils. Karen will take care of getting
the coffee, sweet/lo, half & half, juice, and small juice
cups. She already has the coffee cups and soda.
Karen offered to have a BBQ at her house on Saturday
night for anyone at the grounds that would like to come.
Jeanne suggested that we have pizza for the dinner. Pam
and Dave mentioned a place in Chino that has good pizza
for a decent price. We approved having pizza, salad. People would bring their own drinks.
Dave asked Jim to check out a place in Phoenix to get the 4
foot concrete stakes that are needed to hold the PVC to
mark the course. Dave wanted to know about how to get
the bird crate/water out to the course. Karen mentioned
that the NFS rep mentioned that we could drive a truck out
the where the bird field would be. We will check on this.
Under Unfinished Business: The sale of a calendar as a
fundraiser, as suggested by Nancy White, was tabled until
the next meeting.
Under New Business: Karen reported that the January
field trial to be held January 20-22, 2012 in Sonoita has
been approved by AKC. In addition, BLM has approved
the club to use grounds at Las Cienegas NRA, and has
given the club a one-year license. We‟ve had great support from the Southern AZ GSP Club in getting paperwork handled, grounds secured, birds ordered etc. The
event is being “mentored” by the Sahuaro Brittany Club.
Tee Shirts: To place our order for tee shirts, we still need
about another dozen to be ordered by members.
Next Meeting: It was decided to have the next meeting at
the southern end of our “territory.” Temperatures in the
Phoenix area will have dropped. It‟s important that we get
as many members as possible to attend, as we‟ll need to
talk about the field trial in Sonoita. The place will be determined, but New River and Anthem were mentioned.
As far as dates: it was thought that mid-November or just
after Thanksgiving were options. Dave asked to have
both options put in the newsletter, with the members deciding which would work best.
The American Brittany Club is having a raffle to help offset the costs of their National events. Tickets were sent by
the parent club. Items being raffled are: a Garmin GPS, a
Kindle Book, a Tracking System. Tickets are $5 each or 5
for $20. Tickets would be available at the Hunt Test.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 2PM.
Respectfully Submitted,
Karen Nelsen

DOGS ON STRIKE
Miller's Musings
When I was fifteen, I went bird hunting with my dad and a couple
of his friends. What made this trip unique for me was the fact
that one of the friends brought along hunting dogs. These dogs
were more excited by the outing than I was. The animals crisscrossed in front of us, occasionally stopping sharply to hold a
point until someone could get a shot at the rising bird. If one of
us missed too often, the dogs would quit hunting for us, and go
swear allegiance to another sportsman. Once, when I missed two
shots in a row, the dog in front of me simply retired to the shade
of a Palo-Verde and laid down. It was as if to say, “Look, I found
the bird. I showed you where it was. I held it until you got here,
and you couldn't live up your end of the bargain. Hence, I quit.”
At the end of the day, I presented one of the rabbits I'd shot to the
dogs. Clearly unimpressed they both backpedaled in disgust as if
I'd offered them rancid fruit. “We are bird dogs, sir. Perhaps
someday, should your skill level improve, we may let you work
with us again.”

I WANTED A DALMATIAN...OR HOW WE ENDED UP WITH BRITTANYS
By Nancy White
I wanted a Dalmatian when I first met Bill. I had a Dalmatian years before and wanted another. Bill
wanted a hunting dog, as he grew up in Kansas and frequently hunted pheasants with younger brother,
Larry, as a kid and it was his fantasy, if he ever had another dog, to get a hunting dog. So, we compromised. We got a black and white Pointer called “Buster.”
Six months later, we bought his half sister, an orange and white Pointer who was named
“Wink” for the horizontal patch of orange over her eye that made it look like she was winking!
Both were pre named. So, we now had two English Pointers, Buster and Wink.
Buster developed Addison's Disease at age 2 or so. We fondly referred to him as out $5.00
a day dog for the medication we had to give him to keep him alive. He passed away from
complications of his disease at age 9, which we thought was pretty young for a dog! Wink
passed away 6 months later from a cerebral hemorrhage. We were devastated! We went
from a 2-dog family to none in 6 months!
Bill had a college friend, Tim Poling, who had “Gringo de Britt” , who was a National Champion Field Trial Brittany, and
Bandit and Ban Dee. He was talking to Bill one day about the loss of our English Pointers and suggested that Bill get a
Brittany. He told Bill that if you ever wanted a great hunting dog and a wonderful dog around the home, a Brittany was
the way to go. We were so devastated at the loss of our two English Pointers that we decided to wait until after Christmas 1996, to get another dog.
But then I decided to start looking into Brittany breeders locally and was referred to Don McNabb, a local breeder in Glendale, AZ. He had a pregnant bitch that was due at the end of September. Hannah and her litter mates were born on
September 24th, the same as Bill's birthday! We contacted Don and expressed interest in a solid (versus roan) female.
They had two! So Bill and I went over to look at the litter and he chose Hannah! She was the most aggressive one in
the bunch and she happened to be solid orange and white!
We had agreed not to send her away for hunting training as we had with Buster and Wink. We sent them off for a few
months when they were quite young and missed out on their puppy months. I wasn't going to allow that again! Besides,
the trainer trained the dog and failed to train Bill! We had two trained dogs that we didn't know how to hunt with!
This time, Bill was going to find someone to help him train his own dog!
We were referred to Don Humes who helped us do exactly that. Then, everyone in the group who were training their own
dogs, got involved in Hunt Tests. We have a good friend in the Vizsla Club who convinced us to join with our Brittany.
We were the only non Vizsla in the club! (When Hannah got her Master Hunter, they gave her a plaque!) We didn't do
any of the junior or senior hunt tests early enough, so Bill decided to get Hannah involved at the Master Hunter level. We
passed 6 Master Hunter tests in relatively short time, according to everyone else. Humming. Now what should we do
with her?
Then, one if the AZ Brittany clubs was having a Field Trial. What's that? We entered and she took a 1st place open major on her first time out! What's that mean?! Well, we did it backwards. We got the hardest event out of the way straight
off! And, the rest is history!
She now has her Field Championship and has 6 points toward her Amateur Field Championship. We still need a First
place amateur major.
Hannah will be 6 on September 24th and Bill will be 70!
(Ed Note: In order to be named a FC or AFC, a Brittany needs to place First in a
licensed Brittany Trial that has a minimum of three-points in the Gun Dog or All Age
stake.)
** DC/AFC/NAC Gringo De Britt was elected to the Brittany Hall of Fame in 1983.
** FC Kay-Cee Bandit was elected to the Brittany Hall of Fame in 1984.
** 2x NFC/DC/AFC Ban-Dee was elected to the Brittany Hall of Fame in 1980.
Happy Birthday to Hannah and Bill!

THE CASSARA’S CRUISE TO ALASKA….
by Jim Cassara
Jeanne and I left Phoenix July 19th and had a stop over in Seattle.
We then flew to Anchorage where we spent the night. The next
morning we were able to take in the sights around Anchorage, as well
as the museum. That afternoon we were on a bus headed to the interior and Mt. McKinley. Princess Cruise Lines operates a lodge at the
base of Mt. McKinley and we stayed there for 2 nights. Only 25% of
the visitors to Mt. McKinley are fortunate enough to see the mountain due to poor visibility. Luckily, we had 2 beautiful days to view
the mountain without any cloud cover. Jeanne and I also managed to
hike to a higher elevation where we were able to view Mt. McKinley
from a different vantage point. Our next stop was Denali National
Forest which is half way between Anchorage and Fairbanks. We
spent 1 day at another lodge owned by the Princess Cruise Lines.
The highlights of Denali was a bus tour to view wildlife and to learn about the history of the native inhabitants of the area. The following day we a boarded a train
and spent 8 hours travelling and viewing the scenery on our way back south to the
port town of Whittier. We boarded the ship and headed along the inlet passage to
Glacier Bay and spent a great day admiring the glaciers and spotting whales from
our balcony. We landed in Skagway which is noted for its gold rush history. We
saw more great scenery and historical mining sites as we travelled by narrow gauge
rail to an elevation of 3000'.
Back on the ship
and taking in more
beautiful scenery on
our way to Juneau.
Jeanne took a tram
to the top of Mt.
Roberts and hiked
along the summit.
Meanwhile, I was able to fulfill a life long dream of fly fishing for salmon. We flew by float plane into a remote area,
where the limiting factor on how many fish I caught and released was the length of time it took to land them. We then
cruised further south to Ketchikan, which is the Salmon Capital of the World. Ketchikan is also noted for its Indian
lore and collection of totem poles. It was the last inland excursion of our trip. The remainder of our trip was spent
cruising the inlet passage on our way to Vancouver. From there it was back home to sunny Phoenix.
Overall, the trip was a great escape from our heat as we enjoyed temps in the 60's with overcast skies. The food and the
service on the ship were phenomenal as expected. Jeanne and I only gained about 5 lbs. due to use of the indoor gym
and our walks on deck.
Naturally, the only downside of the trip was leaving Ranger and the Mav at home.

MORE BRAGS
Martin and Julie Maresh have been running Linda McDonald‟s dog “Luke” in
field trials over here in Arizona. Linda is a member of the California Brittany
Club. Luke needs only 2 points to finish his Field Champion title. This would
make him a Dual Champion. He already has his Bench title and his Amateur
Field Championship title. At the Greater Phoenix Brittany Club‟s trial, Luke
took 4th place in the Open Gun Dog stake. His registered name is: CH/AFC
LOKI’S BLIZZARD OF MISCHIEF.
Marilyn Brown is especially proud of
MVP/REDLINE’S CALIFORNIA DREAMIN’, JH. Cali not only has a picture of her in a
featured article in the Spring issue of the “Ruffed
Grouse Society‟s” magazine, but she‟s also one
of the chosen guide dogs used on hunts on the
ranch of Ben O. Williams.
Not to be outdone, Cali‟s brother, Tiger
