Gianni Motti - Cahiers d`Artistes
Armelle Leturcq Editorial Gianni Motti is a ball of energy. He's forever on the alert. Hyperactivity is his way of life. lt has to do with an attitude of unfla gg ing charm, which makes every momentan important one, be it the opening of a show or just having supper - nothing can be commonplace. Gianni Motti i al o a radica l who takes stands that tbe art wor ld cannot appropriate to clear it consc ience. He refers us directly to the debilitating consequences of prejudice and impotence, to our inability to react, to our ego ism, and to our eth nocentricity. Gianni Motti is also endowed with an extrerne ly keen eye. His intervention take on the dimension of rumours which go beyond the sphere of art. He is a ren egade, who has shed all preordained roles. It is on ly when hi work is detached from all discourse and from all artistic context that it assumes its fu ll worth. Decidement on me cache des choses!»). Jade Lindgaard " Prospect" Evcning at the C P Paris, 8 July 1998 Inside/Out idc The boys were mad and th e girl naughty. One Wednesday evening during la t year's World Cup, Gianni Motti transformcd the gardens of the entre ational de la Photographie into a sitcom-sty le antechamber: gi rls on one side, boys on lhe other. The so le justification for lhis cheeky and bizarrely gender-o ri ented little joke was its candid, slightly inane injusticc. Thc boys were restricted to the green of the garden off Rue Berryer, the girl were invited into the heart of the P, behind clo ed hutters, impri oned in complicity with the artist. Motti, with a twinkle in his eye and a torm in hi hair, took advantage of th is fine opportunity to swear hi evening' eaptive to ecrecy. l-la vi ng stolen half of his pub lic, the arti t now stole the show. o what actua ll y happcned behind the demure wa ll of the ea t wing of the Hötel alomon de Roth child? Thc gua rd were waiti ng for th e end of the event so they could closc the door of the P and rush off to watch the football. Out ide, thc boy wcre getting bored, waiting their turn. Re pectable or dubiou ? At the end of hi lifteen female minutcs, Motti had himself photographecl quatting amicl t the ladies, thus rounding offhi bizarre intervention with a touch of kitsch, like a bubble-gum-card Football tea111 with the referee to the siele and the player in the middle. The piece in question i an article, or rather a photograph, published in l 'Humanite in May 1998; a shot of a clemonstration of the kind frequently reported in this daily: an anti- ational Front march in Paris. In thc foreground, Robert Hue, secretary general ofthe Party, urrounded by other ommuni t dignitarie . ot far behind, clearly visible in thc crowd, a young man wearing a T-shirt with thc word "Gianni Motti's a sistant". The image would no doubt have been forgotlcn had it not been spottcd by a connois eur and hung on the wall at Glassbox during an cxhibition entitlcd "Loisirs, working title". ow, by way of explanation, a brief tlashback. The previou year, a student at the finc arts schoo l in Grenoble was awarded a ix-month grant to work as the a i tant of a recogni ecl artist. Thc young man chose ianni Motti, who, ince hi work ha always sought to avoid producing anything, or at least anything concrete, was at a loss as to what to do with thi unexpcctcd helper. In thc end, he settlecl on a touri tic so lution : the young apprentice would pcnd the six months travelling round the world, financing hi tour with the scholarship money. London, Gcncva, Lo ngele , the Caribbean, Australia, New Zcaland, the Philippinc , etc. - the only condition was that he hould wear some kind of a sign indicating his pre ence to all but not revealing the nature of his mission. Hence the T-shirt. This peripatetic performance reminds u of the travcls of anothcr great fanta ist, David Medalla, who had himself photographed in variou location around the world stancling next to lcttcrs forming his name. Back to quare onc. Thc young man ' wandering came to an end in Pari in the month ofMay. The day of a demo. l lere wa the final mi ion. A urprise photo. An exhibition at Glassbox. He hacl come full circle and Gianni was enchanted, crowned king of narcis i tic tourism. The usefulness of the useless. And such a chic apprenticeship to top it off. Un es pace et un temps ou le sujet cesse d'etre represente et regagne son autonomie, sa puissance verba le, son röle et son statut d'acteur. by Doctor Gianni Motti The set-up i simpl e: an arm chair, a chaise longue, a tab le ancl a tele phone in a neutral roo m without decorat ion or any other sign of human presence. lt looks like a bcclroom, an offi ce or a waiting room. Ancl, before its activa tion , it is all th o e thin gs. Then the proloco l, whi ch i just as elementary: an unkn own person makes an ap pointmcnt, rec line and, within a limited timeframe, ta lk about him/herself, fac ing another person abo ut whom s/he knows noth ing, but who listens, answers ancl asks questi ons. All this is stran gcly simi lar to what we are all fami li ar with, eilher in practice or in theo ry: psychoanalys is. The onl y di Ffe rencc is that the th erapi st here is an artist who ignores the controllers of (po t-) Freudian or (post-) Lacanian orth ocloxy, that each sess ion results in a Polaro id and a certificate being given to the pati ent-cum-v isito r, testifying that /he has bought and ex peri enced somethin g (though just what th is may be is a moot questi on). Moreover, th e scene takes place in a di ffe rent and di tin cti ve setting, th at of an ex hibi tion in a museum of contempora ry art. There is perhaps no neecl to point out how suitab le such a place is for this kincl of di splacement, charged as it is with unspoken emotions, fa ntasies, tensions and fru trat ion both fo r th ose who visit it ancl for those who work there. You need to have been in such spaces to measure the power ofthe silence, confusion and un contro ll ed madness of the peo ple thcre. The proposition macle to Gianni Motti to ex pl ore the logic of this ex hibition in terms of the subj ectivity it engender wa met wilh a litcral and rad ica l re ponsc that made it poss ible to move beyond the simple theoretica l ancl ae thetic framework of the project, th ereby breaking the bouncl of representat ion, image and mea nin g (for whi ch 1 am still ve ry grateful). The u ual bigw igs were strolling through the tall trees ex patiating on the late t monochrom e by Arthur Schm inken, and more relaxed vi itors were already sitting on the grass. Yeronique Bacchetta, the director, was comp lain ing in an und ertone about th e Centre's annual quota of visitors when a coach swu ng in to the park, brushing through th e branches and coming to a stop just outs ide the entrance amid engi ne noises and ex haust fumes. Because of the tinted windows it took a moment to rea lisc th at inside a crowd of Japanese wcre starin g out at u , cameras to the ready. Gianni Motti is innoeent. The life he lcads is indeed irreproachablc. But thcn how could it be otherwise for omcone who, during his funeral, ten years ago, was graced with Re urrcction? In 1989, in a mall village in northcrn pain, Gianni Motti organised his own burial, right in the micldle of All anta Marta . The event was properly advertised on the obituaries page of the local new paper, but ended uddenly, just before the body was lowercd into the ground, when thc artist finally wriggled out of what was an increasingly ominous mise-en-sccne. What can it mcan for an artist to imulate his own death? Let us note, first or all, that the village Motti chose, though not his chi ldhood home, was in many ways si milar to it. There is a p ychoanalytica l theme here which cou ld be traccd through the artist's various changes of identity, whcther replaeing artist Alexandrc Bianchini at a photography es ion at the exhibition "Tribune de Geneve ", usurping thc place of an Indonesian represcntative at thc UN in encva, or ending up in front of the TV camera as a member of the Neuchatel-Xamax Footba ll tcam . The funeral action could also be placed in lhe contcxt of Motti' scries of performances in which, following in the footsteps of his illustrious forebcars, he play with the limits or "possibility", adopting the po ition or arti t-demiurge. (lt is significant in thi respect that whcn he claims responsibility 44 for an ea rthqu ake or for the "crash" of Challenge r, he does so lcss to asse rt his power than to take th c blame for such catastrophes.) Whelhcr il is read a an erasure of origins or a Chri stlike self-portrait, Mo tti 's funeral ca n be seen as a foca l point of hi work. This suicide, comm itted at a matu re agc, was above all that of the trad itio nal artisti c function. incc th en, Motti has becn engaged in a ceaseless search fo r ways of estab li shin g co ntact with th e rea l. The sp here ma y be cultural (hijacking a coachload of Japanesc tourists in order to transfo rm a performance Festival at thc entre de Grav ure Co ntemporai ne in Geneva into a touri st attraction), po li tica l (try ing to Force thc res ignation of th e olombian president by telepalh y, an attempt that beca me a media event) or socia l. Once again, he excels when th ere is a co ncrele situation to be addressed. Thu , when commissioned to co ntribute to one of those num ero us attempl lo create "pub lic art", he res ponded directly to th e se nsitive i sues involvcd by offering a special shelter for Geneva's hom cless, Car To uche, attractively placed on the lakes ide, just below a luxury hotel, whi ch use rs co uld enjoy for the duration of that summer (a nd ala no longer). Finally the greasy pole (mät de Cocagne) prcse nted al th e AN in euchätel and the Ana li x Ga llery in Geneva can be see n as cmb lematic of ihe kind of relation that the arti l eeks to esta bli sh with viewers ofhis cx hibiti ons. Between cei ling and floor he hun g hams, sa usages and other victuals, but also a few acccsso ri es from a ncighbouring sex shop and Windows 95, all waiting for a vis itor bold enough to climb up the slippery masl. Motti thus lransferred an interactive structure (s imul atin g abu ndance and festi vity) to an art space, but withoul lending it any particular artisti c status or defincd critica l reso nance.
