VIDEO PHONES
1. People have been dreaming of them for a long time : // telephones which allow
you not just to hear the person you are talking to, but to see him or her too. //
Now at last it is possible in Britain, where Europe's first video telephones have
just been launched by Marconi, a telecommunications firm. //
2. Since April people in Britain have been able to buy videophones that operate with
normal British Telecom ( BT ) phone lines. // According to BT it is the most
important development of the telephone in more than a century. //
3. The Relate 2000 model, which is on sale to the public, is about the same size as
a normal office telephone, and weighs just over 1.5 Kilogram. It includes a threeinch fold-down colour video screen, with a resolution of 128 x 96 pixels. It is on
sale at a reasonable price - £399 per unit, including tax.
4. BT expect that the new system will be extremely popular in Britain. The
videophones are also distributed in America, Italy and Hong Kong.
5. If the new system is successful, the price of videophones will soon come down.
BT say that they will be the standard equipment of British homes at the end of the
century.
6. The Marconi system is not the only videophone system in operation in the world.
In the USA there is a system designed by the American telecommunications firm
AT & T , but the two systems are not compatible.
