Etienne Mullet has been the Head of the Ethics and Work
laboratory at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes during
25 years. This laboratory has conducted empirical studies
along four lines of investigation: environmental risk
perception, conflict transformation, cognitive preservations
in aging, and medical ethics and ethics in politics.
Four applications of a psychological technique to the domain of ethics will be presented. They concern:
(a) the allocation of bonuses to senior executives in times of global crisis (business ethics), (b) the
granting of amnesties to perpetrators of violence by transitional political regimes (ethics in politics), (c)
the allocation of scarce/rare medical resources to HIV patients in poor countries (medical ethics), and
(d) the acceptability of psychotherapies from the patient’s viewpoint (ethics in psychology). The
contribution of psychologists to the examination of big societal issues is discussed.
