The Historic North
The Historic North
N
Self-guided walk
St Sampson’s and the Vale are known as the island’s
historical heartland and it is easy to see why. With forts
and castles, towers and Neolithic burial chambers, history
is around every corner in Guernsey’s northern parishes.
Peppered with memorials from bygone eras, this area
provides a compelling snapshot of the region’s history.
Start your walk at 700-year-old Vale Castle, beside the
picturesque Bordeaux Harbour and meander around the
coastline to L’Ancresse Common and beyond. The Common is
home to loop-holed towers, WW2 defences built by the occupying
forces, a chambered megalithic tomb and an extraordinary
Neolithic burial mound that is thought to date back 7000 years.
WALK INFO
This walk starts at Vale Castle and weaves around the northern coastline, past
picturesque harbours and sweeping bays, ancient tombs and imposing forts,
ending at one of the island’s most impressive beaches, Pembroke Bay.
Go the extra mile!
Why not continue your walk and
discover more about Guernsey’s
ancient and fascinating past? Just a short
walk from Pembroke Bay, across L’Ancresse
Common, are two of the best examples of
Neolithic structures in Europe. Meander on to
the coast and take the path around to Rousse
Tower. Not only packed full of history, it offers
fabulous views. There is also a very popular
kiosk nearby. Allow an additional hour for
the extended walk of just under 2 miles.
Useful information: Connect with bus routes 21,
31, 91 and 111 at Rousse. Route 91 will return
you back to Bordeaux, where you started.
Start Point: Vale Castle Approximate distance of walk: 3.5 miles Terrain: Flat
Finish point: Pembroke Bay Approximate time: 1 hour 30 minutes
USEFUL INFO
Bus routes 11 and 91 travel between Pembroke Bay and Bordeaux. For more

Vale Castle: Although constructed as an Iron Age
fort, a castle was built on the site 500 years ago. In the 18th
century several barrack blocks were built within the castle walls but
were later demolished. During the Second World War the German
occupying forces fortified the castle and the
surrounding area, remains of which can be seen
today. If you would like to find out more about the
Castle’s history, head up the slope and through its
impressive stone arch entrance where there are a
number of interpretation boards.

Le Dehus Passage Tomb: A little inland from Bordeaux harbour, this
Neolithic Dolmen features a large, accessible chamber which has a figure
carved into one of the capstones. The mysterious rock carving representing
a bearded hunter with his bow and arrows is in the inside chamber and
known as the Guardian of the Tomb. The prehistoric passage grave is
approximately 10 metres in length. A large quantity of finds dating from
between 3500-2000BC have been found at the site.
Fort Doyle: Constructed in the early
1800s, the Fort would have protected the
north approaches of St Peter Port
with three heavy guns. There is plenty
more information on site, via the
interpretation boards.

Continue around the headland and you
will come to Fort Le Marchant, which
offers a fabulous panoramic view across
one of the island’s most spectacular bays.
You are now at the north-easterly point
of L’Ancresse Common. Punctuated with
Towers and Fortifications, it is also home
to the more recently installed Millennium
Stone, to the West.
If you’re ready for a rest, stop at the
Beach House Café at Pembroke Bay
for a drink or some lunch.
Le Varde Passage Grave: This prehistoric passage
grave is the largest and most impressive surviving
megalithic structure on the island. It was built during
the Neolithic period (c.4000-2500BC) and was in use
until the last Bronze Age (c.1000BC). The site was
discovered in 1811 when human skulls and bones
were unearthed. It has a five-metre long capstone that
weighs 10 tonnes. There are stunning views from the
site over L’Ancresse Bay and the Common.
Houmet Tavern
Rousse kiosk is a popular
spot for a cup of tea and slice
of homemade cake and offers
fabulous views across the
northern bays.
Rousse Tower / Battery:
FINISH
