Latvia, passed on 9 April 2002” the Secretary General added. “By deleting the state language proficiency requirement from its election legislation, Latvia has promptly ensured that no similar violations could occur in the future” Mr Schwimmer concluded. Le Secrétaire Général du Conseil de l’Europe se félicite des amendements à la loi électorale lettone Strasbourg, 10.05.2002 - Le Secrétaire Général du Conseil de l’Europe, Walter Schwimmer, s’est réjoui aujourd’hui de l’adoption, par le Parlement de Lettonie (Saeima), d’amendements à la loi électorale indiquant « que la maîtrise de la langue lettone ne serait désormais plus une condition préalable à la candidature aux élections aux niveaux national et local ». « L’adoption de ces amendements s’inscrit dans la droite ligne des engagements pris par la Lettonie au moment de son adhésion au Conseil de l’Europe et je me réjouis de la rapidité avec laquelle les autorités de ce pays ont réagi après la décision rendue le 9 avril dernier par la Cour européenne des droits de l’homme dans l’affaire Podkolzina v. Lettonie », a ajouté le Secrétaire Général. « En retirant la disposition sur la maîtrise de la langue d’Etat de son code électoral, la Lettonie a rapidement garanti le fait que de telles violations ne pourront plus se reproduire» a conclu M.
