With his EDITION hotels, Nth dimension, hotelier extraordinaire, Ian Schrager, launches a new definition of taste, something between monotone elegance and refined minimalism for this, his first European property for the group, is an Istanbul masterclass. Ian Schrager is back ! with the opening of the Istanbul EDITION in May 2010 - in the former HSBC bank which fell prey to a terrorist attack - it personifies uncluttered style, giving new meaning to minimalchic at odds with the surreal codes of designer, Philippe Starck for the Morgans group. Also, the latest brand for this hotel magnate a joint ventrue with Marriott - combining open space, metal mosaics, travertine silver, Italian marble, embossed bronze and rosewood. No artwork or a colour, everything here is treated in shades and tones. It is reminiscent of 50 Gramercy Park North apartments, conceived by Ian Schrager in 2006, in collusion with British architect, John Pawson, going against the current trends of bling and brash, prevailing at the time. The brand expresses a return to minimal-chic and intimate space that will, during the coming months, spread like a wildfire, Barcelona, Mexico, South Beach, Bangkok and London. artravel 159 HOTEL IStaNBUl En commençant par Istanbul de ce côté du monde, le propos ne pouvait qu’être enlevé, voire jusqu’au-boutiste : 77 vastes chambres (plus un penthouse surdimensionné) en bois de rose ou chêne blanchi, des salles de bains en marbre blanc translucide – qui donne l’impression d’un corian rétro-éclairé – des fragrances et amenities signés Le Labo, une Drawing Room, ponctuée de deux cheminées et un club privé, Billionaire’s Boys Club, réparti sur deux étages pour danser jusqu’aux petites heures de la nuit. 160 artravel Opening the first, Editions on this side of the world, Istanbul will attract only the diehards: 77 large rooms (plus a huge penthouse) crafted in rosewood or light oak, bathrooms in white translucent marble - which gives the impression of backlit Corian – amenities and fragrances by Le Labo, a drawing room with two fireplaces and a private club, Billionaire’s Boys Club, divided over two floors for dancing into the ‘wee hours’. Everything has been thought of down to the last detail, without harshness or approximation, like the 7 metre aquarium that forms the back wall to the Gold Bar, takes inspiration from the Turkish tea-room or the cinema, furnished in taupe velvet that will quickly become the venue for Turkish private screening. Almost anachronistic, the Cipriani returns, the glamour of yesteryear with its burnt orange, art deco decor and the sculptural mahogany bar; when it comes to fine dining, going back to basics and quality products are always better than an Nth dimension designer restaurant ! Spread over three floors and nearly 2000 m², the ESPA is a near perfect combination of upholstered walls lined with horse hair, huge stone bowls and patterned leather or embossed bronze floors; ten treatment rooms, plus a double suite, two steam rooms and saunas, a beauty treatment salon designed by Studio Bastian Gonzales, a 15 metre swimming pool which doubles as Vitality Pool. More than a Spa, this is a benchmark in the heart of the world’s turkish bath capital. artravel 161
