Global Media Coverage Summary
2011 International Conference on Family Planning
September – December 2011
The 2011 International Conference on Family Planning (ICFP), held in Dakar, Senegal on 28
November-2 December, was the largest meeting ever of its kind. Convening nearly 2,200
researchers, frontline workers, donors, and policymakers from 85 countries, the conference
highlighted the critical need for renewed political and financial support for family planning. The
President of Senegal opened the meeting with a rousing message of support for family
planning, and was joined by video remarks from philanthropist Melinda Gates and comments
from UNFPA Executive Director Babatunde Osotimehin. DFID Under Secretary of State Stephen
O’Brien also attended the conference, pledging more than $60 million dollars of new funds for
contraception.
ICFP featured hundreds of in-depth and varied sessions which together delivered a clear
message: family planning saves lives, and access to these services is crucial for a broad array of
health and economic development reasons. Ensuring access to family planning is not just the
right thing to do, but the economically smart thing to do. Significant global print, online, radio,
and television coverage echoed these messages, conveying the urgent need to increase family
planning access for more than 215 million women worldwide.
From September through December 2011, Global Health Strategies worked closely with
conference organizers at the Bill & Melinda Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive
Health to orchestrate and execute a comprehensive global communications strategy. The vision
was to build broad awareness about the conference, amplify key family planning messages and
generate a groundswell of attention that resonated beyond Dakar. Outreach targeted top
outlets in the US, Europe, and Africa, editorial boards, key blogs, and radio and television
broadcast media around the world.
Media Coverage Summary
Media efforts leading up to and during ICFP helped create a drumbeat of positive coverage
around access to family planning around the world. Outreach highlighted the historic scope of
the meeting, in context with recent data demonstrating the cost-effectiveness of family
planning and significant unmet need of 215 million women. Two milestones around the
conference, the world’s population hitting 7 billion and World AIDS Day, provided important
opportunities to further amplify conference messages.
A concerted social media strategy supported this media outreach, and on Twitter, 35 official
“Family Planning Champions” – including the Minister of Health of Rwanda, USAID and UNFPA,
among others – helped raise the profile of the conference and the issue of family planning.
Over the past few months, nearly 3,500 tweets have mentioned #ICFP2011 and nearly 4,000
have mentioned #familyplanning.
Overall, 114 journalists from 27 countries attended 2011 ICFP, while 50 journalists – including
top US and UK reporters – covered the conference “virtually,” calling in for a global
teleconference held on the conference’s opening day. More than 240 stories were published in
total. (See the following page for a breakdown of story distribution by country.) In addition,
partner organizations posted nearly 100 blogs. By mid-December 2011, coverage fell into the
following categories:

Media Highlights
Major coverage themes included the following:

Top US, Canadian and European Coverage: There was thoughtful coverage of trends in
family planning funding, noting specific donor leadership and highlighting opportunities
for greater donor engagement. Sarah Boseley from The Guardian attended the
conference and wrote three insightful pieces on family planning access in West Africa
and the role of the donor. Overall, coverage echoed the conference key messages
pushing for greater political and financial support.

Senegalese Coverage: Senegal’s President and First Lady opened the conference, and
the Prime Minister of Senegal closed it. Many Senegalese print, radio and TV journalists
attended and local coverage highlighted specific success stories, including the family
planning leadership of traditional Muslim leaders. Other highlights included
opportunities for Senegal to model progress for the rest of the West African region.

Broader African Coverage: Coverage from across Africa was strong, examining more indepth examples of success and opportunities for improvement in family planning access
and calling on African leaders to commit more funding and political will. Family planning
success in Ethiopia, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Malawi was highlighted as role models
for other African countries. Coverage also profiled African leaders such as Sierra Leone’s
Health Minister Zainab Bangura and Senegal’s Minister of Health Modou Diagne Fada.

Global Op-Ed Campaign: ICFP orchestrated a global op-ed campaign highlighting the
need for greater investment in family planning, and encouraging African leadership. The
campaign resulted in the placement of nearly 40 op-eds in top papers across Africa and
in Cambodia during the weeks leading up to ICFP. The op-eds were authored by key
thought leaders including Dr. Fred Sai, several UNFPA country representatives, Women
Deliver President Jill Sheffield, and PSI’s Cambodia country representative.

World AIDS Day Coverage: ICFP spanned World AIDS Day, and there was considerable
coverage that linked the conference with a discussion of opportunities for further
integrating family planning and HIV/AIDS services. There was additional coverage of
recent research linking hormonal contraception with increased risks of HIV, which a
special high-level panel during the conference discussed. Notably, the New Yorker’s
Alexis Okeowo wrote a piece discussing the significance of the research and what it
means for women in Africa.

World Population Hits 7 Billion Coverage: Recognizing that on 31 October the world’s
population surpassed 7 billion — a major global health and development news story —
ICFP leveraged this to call attention to the importance of voluntary family planning.
Coverage of this landmark occasion, from India and Nigeria, to the UK, US, and Canada,
highlighted the significance of ICFP in light of the addition of the world’s seven billionth
baby.

Blog Coverage: ICFP worked specifically to engage online reporters and bloggers to build
the conference’s profile in digital media, building relationships, placing articles, and
cross-posting them to blog aggregates. A social media strategy, which leveraged strong
Twitter support, encouraged broad online engagement from both independent bloggers
and partner organizations.
