SYNDICAT FRANÇAIS DE L’AQUACULTURE MARINE ET NOUVELLE The “Syndicat Français de l’Aquaculture Marine et Nouvelle” (SFAM) groups together the great majority of French producers of marine and new species (sturgeon), representing: - - seven main species : sea-bass, gilt-head sea-bream, meager, salmon, turbot, sturgeon and now sole. about sixty sites from Dunkerque along the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts to the southernmost point of Corsica. ongrowing operations of all sizes from over 2000 tonnes to a few tens of tonnes, in sea-cages or land-based basins. high-performance hatcheries with a production of approximately 70 million juveniles, 70% of which are exported. a sturgeon sector which makes France one of the leading countries for the production of farmed caviar, with a production around 20 T. a production of table-fish of the order of 6 000 T, which is a very small part of the European production, but is capable of fulfilling consumers’ requirements in terms of freshness, origin and traceability, by ensuring the supply of high-quality products with the logo of either the inter-profession collective marque ‘Aquaculture de nos régions, charte qualité’, or ‘Label Rouge’ or organic products. a sector deeply engaged in ‘Sustainable Aquaculture’ with the aim of satisfying the present needs of our society without prejudice to the needs of future generations. French marine aquaculture is presently going through very difficult times (economic crisis made worse by the magnitude and impacts of the crisis which has hit the Greek fish farming sector, sites devastated by the Xynthia tempest, financial consequences of new regulations). It is waiting for the firming up of the expressed political will to implement the necessary tools to secure the present activity and promote further development in order to reduce the dependence of France on imported seafood products. The SFAM participates in the Comité National des Pêches Maritimes et des Elevages Marins (CNPMEM). At the national level, the aquaculture sector is represented by both the Fédération Francaise d’Aquaculture (FFA), of which the SFAM is a member syndicate, and by the Comité Interprofessionel des Produits de l’Aquaculture (CIPA). At the European level, the FFA is a member of FEAP (European Federation of Aquaculture Producers).
