SHERBROOKE. Je mentionnais dans le NS de
janvier que ce mois a une saveur toute salésienne.
Cela s’est ressenti surtout ces derniers jours à
l’approche de la fête de Don Bosco. Reprenons le fil
du temps dans un certain ordre et en arriver au
sommet le 31 janvier.
Bosco a voulu donner son nom à ses religieux en les
appelant salésiens. Mais puisque cette année, cette
date tombait un dimanche, et ne pouvant être
célébrée ce jour-là, vu la préséance du dimanche,
c’est le samedi 23 que nous l’avons soulignée. Et
nous avons profité de la visite du P. Richard Authier
pour l’inviter à présider l’eucharistie; pour nous
montrer son appréciation d’un tel égard envers lui, il
nous a invités au restaurant pour le souper.
Notre équipe de basket Juvénile Masculin div.3
Les cours reprenaient le 4 janvier; les
étudiants ne semblaient pas mécontents de
reprendre les bancs d’école comme on disait
« jadis ». Il n’y pas seulement que les études et les
travaux scolaires; on retrouve les amitiés, l’échange
de l’expérience des vacances, les projets, etc.
Du côté de la communauté, les activités
habituelles se poursuivent; rencontre du conseil
pour, entre autres, examiner la situation financière
2015 et approuver les budgets 2016 de la
communauté et du Camp Savio. Quelques
rencontres communautaires aussi afin de fournir
notre « input » en vue du Chapitre Provincial qui
aura lieu à Stony Point, NY, en avril.
Le 24 janvier est la fête liturgique de saint
François de Sales, un événement que chaque
communauté salésienne souligne puisque Don
Père Paul Cossette (1941-2013)
Quelques jours plus tard, le 28, nous avons
commémoré le décès du Père Paul Cossette; il y a
3 ans déjà, il nous quittait pour le paradis. Chaque
année à cette date, nous rappelons aussi le décès en

l’an 2000 du P. Francis Klauder, sdb, qui fut
professeur de philosophie de plusieurs d’entre nous
au Don Bosco College, Newton, NJ. Un bel esprit et
admirateur de saint Thomas d’Aquin dont nous
célébrons la fête liturgique ce jour-là même.
L’un des événements en lien avec la fête du
saint éducateur est le Bosco-Show. Encore cette
année, ce fut une parade de talents, digne du Centre
Bell …ou presque!

L’équipe de cheerleading du Salésien
Quelques jours avant la fête de Don Bosco,
c’était « Portes Ouvertes » pour les 5 groupes de la
1re sec; c.à.d. la visite de 5 locaux de l’école à
l’usage de la communauté, les initiant ainsi à la
connaissance de don Bosco comme homme du
travail, de la communication sociale, de la
communauté et de la prière et en même temps à une
meilleure connaissance des salésiens qui s’efforcent
de poursuivre sa mission. Les 2 frères coadjuteurs,
Gérard Richard et Marcel Gauthier, expliquent dans
leur atelier respectif de menuiserie et de reliure, la
nature de leur travail et de leur contribution à
l’œuvre éducative du Salésien.
Bosco Show 2016 .
Parmi les nombreux exploits sportifs de nos
équipes, je me limite à 3 mentions. Notre équipe de
basketball juvénile masculin div.3 n’a pas seulement
que remporté 4 victoires au tournoi de Trois-Rivières
le 24 janvier, mais est rentrée avec la bannière!
Yannick Métivier et Phil Brochu, leurs entraineursdes anciens du Salésien- ont raison d’être fiers d’eux,
Et notre équipe de cheerleading a remporté l’or cette
année, la meilleure note depuis 3 ans. De belles
performances pour nos élèves du Salésien au
Championnat Canadien tenu à Richmond, B.C.
Or en combat pour Kevyn Joyal; bronze en combat
pour Florence Moffett; argent en kata pour Léa
Morin; bronze en combat pour Derek Joyal; bronze
en kata et bronze en combat pour Benjamin Moffett;
une belle participation pour Noémie Audet et JeanNicolas Roy.
Le 31 janvier, jour de la fête de don Bosco,
les salésiens coopérateurs étaient nos invités pour
l’eucharistie, puis Au Vieux Duluth pour les agapes
fraternelles : l’occasion pour nous de célébrer deux
anniversaires de naissance, ceux du fr. Gérard
Richard et de Gilles Léonard, coordinateur du centre
sherbrookois des coopérateurs.
La saison du théâtre est commencée avec la
présentation le 29 de Les Papillons de Nuit. Les
profits sont versés à une œuvre salésienne d’Haïti
lorsque le groupe d’étudiants JMS-Haïti ira « en
mission » en mai.

l’Eucharistie a pris le repas avec les enfants de la rue
et les mineurs, orphelins de l’Ébola. Don Angel s’est
retrouvé là où serait don Bosco aujourd’hui…

Le début d’une belle aventure :
le hockey scolaire au Salésien
Les Papillons de Nuit
Un dernier événement, non sherbrookois, mais qui a
une portée sur tout le monde salésien (voir article à
la fin). C’est une coutume qu’à la fête de don
Bosco, son successeur, le Recteur Majeur, se
retrouve à l’Oratoire du Valdocco de Turin, là où
demeurait le saint. Cette année il a voulu se
retrouver au Sierra Leone, à Freetown et Lungi, au
Don Bosco Fambul, là où les salésiens ont accueilli
quelque 200 jeunes orphelins de l’Ébola qui se
retrouvent sans parents. Il a aussi visité la prison
centrale de la ville où beaucoup de jeunes se
trouvent; 3 jeunes prisonniers ont raconté leur
malheureuse histoire. Le pape François parle
souvent d’une « Église en sortie », c.à.d. une Église
qui vers ceux qui en ont le plus besoin. Une
« Congrégation en sortie, un Valdocco en sortie ».
Don Angel, après une célébration festive de
SURREY, BC. 2016 entered with a bang with a full
set of Sunday time scheduled Masses and the
resumption of many of our parish activities including
the PREP evening classes. On the 7th many opted to
attend the memorial Mass in honour of Fr. Mario’s
mother, Elena Villaraza. Since he was stopping over
on his return trip from the Philippines, Fr. Mario said
the Mass, gave an excellent homily in sharing
precious highlighted events about his mother,
thanked the parishioners for their thoughtfulness and
kindness, then attended the reception in the Don
Bosco Gym.
After the 11th our crib was dismantled, and
the decorated- dressed statue of the Infant of Prague
was displayed in its place, highlighted by a spotlight
in preparation for the feast day celebration of Sro
Nino with a Mass celebrated by Fr. George on the
16th. It was followed by a pot luck supper that was
enjoyed by all attendees.
Besides the customary monthly Deanery
meetings the priests were busy helping out at Holy
Cross High School and various neighbouring
parishes with celebrating Mass and the sacraments.
As a community we have begun special quality time
“knocking of heads” in preparation for our up-andcoming Provincial Chapter.
A Novena in honour of St. John Bosco was
begun on the 21st with an extra evening Mass in
preparation for our founder’s Feast Day. On the 24th
Fr. Jan prepared a delicious brunch in honour of our
patron, St. Francis de Sales. The community enjoyed
the fruits of his handiwork in the evening when we
gathered together to celebrate in the community
dining room. OLGC School held its annual Don
Bosco Basketball Tournament with many of the local
Catholic grammar schools participating. It was a funfilled event where skills were displayed and trophies
awarded. Fr. John did the honour of blessing the
awards in our gym filled to capacity.
Our side altar with the life-size statue of St.
John Bosco was decorated with flowers, lighted
candles and his first class relic the whole nine days of
the novena leading up to his feast day. It was actually

celebrated with a 4 pm concelebrated Mass with Fr.
George as the main celebrant, five other priests with
twelve altar servers doing the honours on the 30th.
Six Knights of Columbus from our parish
accompanied the entrance and concluding
procession as honour guards. Everything was youth
orientated as the Youth Choir sang, arranged the
music, did the scripture readings, were the ushers,
welcomers, etc. In spite of the rain, there was a
good crowd in attendance honouring our father and
founder, St. John Bosco. Once again our generous
Salesian Cooperators and Alumni came to the
rescue in preparing the gym, tables and food for this
special event and parish get-together. The Saturday
Polish Language School, under Fr. Jan’s direction,
celebrated a Festival of Don Bosco in OLGC
School Auditorium with games, prizes and
homemade cookies for the children. Fr. Jan spoke to
the older group as they prayed the rosary in church
before St. John Bosco’s decorated shrine and relic.
Holy Cards were distributed as a remembrance of
this special feast day. Meanwhile, our altar servers
(almost 100 strong) held their second meeting and
fun time - under the tutorage of our senior Youth
Coordinators. Fr. Jungi gave them a reflective talk
and Bro. Jerry presented them with their new
serving schedules (Feb. thru May) and
remembrance cards of Don Bosco on this special
occasion.
Our Parish Mission got underway Sat., Jan.
th
30 with the 7 pm Mass running through Thursday,
Feb. 4th with Fr. Lucien Larré as the preacher. To
experience the great mercy of God, the sacrament of
Penance was made available daily from 12 noon to
1 pm, and again from 4 to 6:25 pm with daily
Rosary and Mass followed by Fr. Larré’s talk. This
special schedule was designed to accommodate our
busy parishioners’ time frame. The Mission
concluded with special prayers for Pope Francis to
gain a Plenary Indulgence. Fr. Larré’s themes ran as
follows: The Most Important Decision in Life;
Clinging to Faith in a Godless Society; Maintaining
Hope in Hopeless Situations; Building a Loving
Home in a Selfish Society, and Bringing Love to a
Violent, Hateful Society. On the final day of the
Mission there was Exposition of the Blessed
Sacrament from 9:30 am to 5:40 pm in the main
church.
Truly Don Bosco would be proud of the
various activities, both spiritual and educative, that
were carried out by his sons and lay personnel in his
honour.
Fr. Jan once again put his cooking skills to
our taste buds with a delicious brunch that we
enjoyed after our last Mass of the day, on Jan. 31st in
our community dining room. It truly was a Happy
Feast Day of St. John Bosco. (J.H.)

A Worldwide Salesian Family in Toronto Hamilton
Toronto and Hamilton “house” a Salesian presence
that extends worldwide, as the activities of January
2016 amply show.
A cherished January Salesian youth activity
is the annual WinterDaze event.

The month and the year began with Don Bosco
Residence in Etobicoke housing Bassam and his
family, refugees from Syria. Before the end of the
month, Bassam and his brother, Majid, whom St.
Benedict Church sponsored a year earlier, moved
into a home they were able to rent and their third
brother, Kameel and his family safely arrived in
Toronto.
Gregory the Great Slovenian Catholic Church in
Hamilton to cover parish services.
On a sad note, Bro. Branden Gordon returned to
Etobicoke for the wake and funeral of his greatgrandfather. St. Benedict Church and the Salesian
Family rallied around Bro. Branden and his family to
offer comfort and prayers.
Fr. Mario Villaraza returned from an extended stay in
the Philippines where he ministered by the bedside of
his mother as she ended her earthly journey.
At the end of the month the SDB and Michaelite
Communities exchanged greetings as each celebrated
their founder’s feast day – Blessed Bronisław
Markiewicz on January 30 and Saint John Bosco on
January 31.
Saint Dominic Savio Squires collected hard candy and
soap which they donated to Dr. Andrew Simone’s
Canadian Food For Children.
Facing the relic of Saint John Bosco the Salesian Cooperators
of the Greater Toronto Area renew their promises.
While posing for the photo the Indian Past Pupils,
many from Mumbai, began singing
Saint John Bosco, Our Loving Father.
Spending time in Toronto, too, was Salesian
Confrere Fr. Damir Stojic from Croatia who was
ministering to Croatian families. Going forth from
Hamilton was Fr. Drago Gačnik to Slovenia to
celebrate his parents’ 60th wedding anniversary.
While Fr. Drago was in Slovenia Fr. John Puntino,
followed by Fr. Frank Kelly, stayed at Saint
The Feast of Saint John Bosco at Saint
Benedict Church stands out as the highlight of the
month and as a herald of the ever-expanding Salesian
Family life in and around Toronto. SDB, FMA,
Salesian Cooperators, ADMA, DBV and four major
groups of Past Pupils – from India, the Philippines,
Hong Kong/Macau and Sicily – along with past
pupils from other countries, VIDES and Salesian
Youth Movement leaders joined forces to honour our
Father and Founder. During the Festive Mass
Cooperators renewed their promises. After Mass they
hosted a gathering of over 160 persons for a
luncheon and light program where each group gave a
brief presentation of their organization and activities.
One participant who had been on the Salesian Forum
pilgrimage last summer said, “As soon as I walked

into the Church for Mass I felt as though I were
back at Valdocco.” (J.P.)

SIERRA LEONE, Freetown.- Don Bosco est
toujours vivant parmi les jeunes et les
prisonniers
Rencontrer les prisonniers, se réjouir avec les
jeunes, célébrer l’Eucharistie avec la Famille
salésienne… Le Recteur Majeur, le P. Ángel
Fernández Artime, ces jours-ci en visite au Sierra
Leone, a fêté Don Bosco, refaisant ces mêmes
gestes si chers au Père et Maitre de la Jeunesse.
Dans la journée de samedi, 30 janvier, avant de se
rendre au « Don Bosco Fambul », le P. Á.F. Artime
s’est rendu à la prison principale de Freetown, à
Pademba Road. Là-.bas, après un moment de prière,
le Recteur Majeur a écouté les touchantes histoires
de trois détenus : Abdul, un jeune homme de 24 ans,
emprisonné à 17 ans, sans n’avoir jamais reçu une
accusation écrite et la possibilité de se défendre ;
Mohamed, depuis 10 ans en prison, où il a subi
tortures et humiliations ; et enfin Ibrahim, autrefois
enfant de la rue et détenu à Pademba. Ils bénéficient
aujourd’hui des programmes de l’œuvre de « Don
Bosco Fambul »; tous les trois mettent leur
espérance en Don Bosco.
« Que de peine et d’émotion que d’être avec ces
jeunes, et leur dire ce que Don Bosco leur dirait :
qu’ils ont une autre opportunité, qu’ils ne perdent
pas espoir ! », a commenté le Recteur Majeur.
La soirée de samedi, après la rencontre avec les
filles victimes de violences et les mineurs,
orphelins de l’Ébola, hébergés au ‘ Don Bosco
Fambul’, le Recteur Majeur est rentré à Lungi pour
vivre la veille de la fête de Don Bosco avec les
jeunes du Mouvement Salésien des Jeunes. Les
jeunes, par les danses et le théâtre, ont présenté les
cultures ‘Krio’, ‘Mende’ et ‘Temne’ ; et le Recteur
Majeur a été émerveillé par les prestations, affirmant
dans le ‘Mot du soir’ que la culture africaine est
riche de foi et d’amour. La fête a pris fin avec la
remise de quelques souvenirs au 10e successeur de
don Bosco.
Le dimanche 31 janvier fut le jour de la grande
fête en l’honneur de don Bosco. Le Recteur Majeur a
présidé l’Eucharistie solennelle du matin dans
l’église de Marie Auxiliatrice à Lungi en présence de
plus de 2.000 personnes. Dans un climat de grande
fête et de joie, il a rappelé comment l’Esprit, il y a
200 ans, donna l’inspiration à un homme à se mettre
au service des jeunes les plus pauvres, que cet
homme, don Bosco, n’a jamais abandonné malgré les
grands défis et difficultés. Il a parlé aussi des
touchantes expériences vécues le jour précédent à
Freetown et Lungi, ce qui lui a fait percevoir
comment Don Bosco est vraiment vivant
aujourd’hui au Sierra Leone. Enfin il a invité les
jeunes à suivre l’exemple de don Bosco et à ne pas
avoir peur de suivre le Christ. / ANS 2 fév. 2016
