HPZ Updates Canadian Co-ops and Social Housing Groups on Zimbabwe
I was struck by how co-ops and social housing groups in Canada provide access to
adequate and affordable housing for low-and modest-income households. In Zimbabwe
the 2005 evictions in cities across the country left many members of housing co-ops and
other people homeless, including those who thought they had secure tenure.
Thuso Maphala of Housing People of Zimbabwe
Thuso Maphala is the Board Chair of Rooftops Canada’s partner, Housing People of
Zimbabwe, an NGO that helps low-income communities build and maintain affordable
housing. Mr. Maphala came to Canada in May 2007 to update Canadians on the very
difficult situation in Zimbabwe and to learn about Canadian housing co-ops. He was a
keynote speaker at the Canadian Housing and Renewal Association’s 39th Congress in
Calgary. Mr. Maphala shared HPZ’s experience of community and neighbourhood
rebuilding after government-led evictions made 700,000 people homeless in May 2005.
The plenary audience was deeply moved after seeing a video of the evictions. Watching
people destroy their own houses and the look of despair on the faces of children, women
and sick people was heartbreaking. HPZ, with Canadian support, is assisting members of
51 housing cooperatives to secure land tenure and providing them with incomegeneration training.
Mr. Maphala visited housing co-ops in Calgary, Victoria and Vancouver. In Victoria he
met with WHEAT, an arm of the Victoria International Development Education
Association. WHEAT has helped HPZ assist women in housing cooperatives affected by
the evictions, in particular women living with HIV and AIDS. In Toronto, Mr. Maphala
also met with the Stephen Lewis Foundation, which is providing similar support.
“I was touched by all the solidarity work around Zimbabwe, especially by housing groups
calling on the Canadian government to push for human rights in Zimbabwe and to fund
more humanitarian assistance,” Mr. Maphala said.
Canadians also learned a lot from Mr. Maphala. Mike Alsop, a CHF Canada Board
member, was struck by how it “was possible to push forward and develop housing in
almost impossible circumstances. Buying and stocking cement, doors and windows in the
face of 4500 % inflation is but one example of the creative solutions HPZ is using.”

J’ai été étonné par la façon dont les coopératives et les groupes de logement social du
Canada offrent l’accès à un logement convenable et abordable aux ménages à faible et
modeste revenu. Au Zimbabwe, les expulsions de 2005 menées dans les villes à l’échelle
du pays ont laissé beaucoup de membres de coopératives d’habitation et d’autres
personnes sans abri, même des gens qui croyaient avoir un logement sûr.

Thuso Maphala est le président du conseil d’administration de la Housing People of

est arrivé au Canada en mai 2007 pour informer les Canadiens au sujet de la situation très
difficile au Zimbabwe et en apprendre plus au sujet des coopératives d’habitation
canadiennes. Il était un conférencier invité au 39e Congrès annuel de l’Association
canadienne d’habitation et de rénovation urbaine à Calgary. M. Maphala a décrit
comment la HPZ a aidé à reconstruire des collectivités et des quartiers après que 700 000
personnes se sont retrouvées sans abri à la suite des expulsions sanctionnées par le
gouvernement en mai. Les participants réunis en plénière ont été profondément touchés
après avoir visionné une vidéo des expulsions. Le fait de voir des gens détruire leurs
propres maisons et le désespoir apparent sur le visage des enfants, des femmes et des
personnes malades étaient très émouvants. La HPZ, avec un appui du Canada, aide les
membres de 51 coopératives d’habitation à assurer leur droit à la terre et à leur offrir une
formation pour leur permettre de gagner un revenu.
M. Maphala a visité des coopératives d’habitation à Calgary, Victoria et Vancouver. À
Victoria, il a rencontré la WHEAT, une affiliée de la Victoria International Development
Education Association. La WHEAT a aidé la HPZ à offrir un soutien aux femmes dans
des coopératives d’habitation touchées par les expulsions, notamment des femmes vivant
avec le VIH et le sida. À Toronto, M. Maphala a également rencontré des représentants
de la Stephen Lewis Foundation, qui offre une aide semblable.
«J’ai été touché par tout le travail de solidarité réalisé au nom du Zimbabwe, en
particulier par les groupes de logement qui demandent au gouvernement canadien de
défendre les droits de la personne au Zimbabwe et d’accorder une plus grande aide
humanitaire», a déclaré M. Maphala.
Les Canadiens ont également appris beaucoup de choses de M. Maphala. Mike Alsop,
membre du conseil d’administration de la FHCC, a été étonné par la façon dont «il était
possible de créer des logements dans des conditions aussi difficiles. L’achat et le
stockage de ciment, de portes et de fenêtres face à une inflation de 4 500 % n’est qu’un
exemple des solutions créatrices mises en œuvre par la HPZ.»
