SHERBROOKE. Je rédige ces quelques lignes le 3
février, au terme d’une magnifique tempête de
neige. Il est tombé 25 cm ici en Estrie. Nous
n’étions pas les seuls à goûter aux rigueurs de
l’hiver, Évidemment nos jeunes avaient congé; j’ai
appris ce matin à la rentrée que plusieurs en avaient
profité pour aller dans les centres de ski…! La
tempête venait du Midwest des USA et s’étendait
sur une distance de 3000 km! Cette fois-ci, on n’a
pas annoncé que Toronto avait fait appel à l’armée
(il y eut peut-être censure de publication de la part
du gouvernement…!). Mais aujourd’hui, c’est
magnifique; un soleil radieux rend la blancheur
encore plus étincelante. Même si hier la pratique
générale n’a pu avoir lieu, aujourd’hui c’est le
BoscoShow.
Nos jeunes scientifiques ont pu démontrer
leurs talents et leur créativité lors de l’ExpoSciences à la mi-janvier. Trente-neuf kiosques
occupaient la Salle Père-Décarie d’un mur à
l’autre. Voici, choisis un peu au hasard, quelques
thèmes : Le Cœur, Les Parasites, Leucémie
Myéloïde, Au Pays des Songes, Intelligence
Artificielle,
Géothermie,
Holographie,
L’Expression du Visage etc. Quelque 65 élèves
étaient impliqués; les meilleures présentations iront
à l’Expo Régionale dans quelques semaines.
Plusieurs voyages et événements sont en
préparation. Demain sera journée pédagogique.
Pour les élèves, ce sera l’occasion pour ceux qui le
désirent de pratiquer leur activité hivernale préférée.
Ils auront le choix entre une randonnée en skis de
fond ou raquettes au Mont-Mégantic, de la glissade
au Village Vacances Valcartier, du ski ou planche à
neige au Massif de Charlevoix. Quant aux voyages,
on en est aux derniers préparatifs pour celui des
JMS (Jeunes Missionnaires du Salésien) dans un
orphelinat salésien de Mexico City (16 jeunes de la
4e secondaire et 3 accompagnateurs : 24 fév.- 12
mars). Ils offraient leur souper spaghetti le 29
janvier, recueillant ainsi des profits de c. 4200$,
somme qu’ils laisseront à l’orphelinat. Un autre
voyage, plus culturel celui-là, est celui de la Ruta
Maya : du 21 fév. au 6 mars, 57 jeunes de 2 e et 3e
secondaires se familiariseront avec les cultures
mexicaine et maya en visitant les pyramides mayas et
quelques villes coloniales espagnoles de la péninsule
du Yucatan. Pour les 2 groupes, des cours d’espagnol
sont à l’horaire. Pour ce qui est du voyage que 11
jeunes de 4e et 5e secondaires devaient faire au pays
des pharaons pendant le même congé d’hiver, il est
prudent qu’il ait été cancellé, vu les troubles
sociopolitiques qui agitent l’Égypte depuis quelques
jours. En grande préparation aussi la Semaine du
Mieux-vivre dans quelques jours.
Le BoscoShow est un événement très attendu
chaque année. La fête liturgique de saint Jean Bosco
est célébrée le 31 janvier. Quant à la célébration
« scolaire », elle se tient le jour qui convient le mieux
à l’horaire. Cette fête fait partie de la tradition du
Salésien depuis ses débuts et prend une couleur
différente d’une année à l’autre. Pour ce qui est du
Bosco Show, la formule cette année était très
originale, étant inspirée de Du Talent à Revendre, ou
encore d’America has got Talent. Trois élèves bien
éveillés agissaient comme juges et rendaient leur
jugement après chaque prestation. Une vingtaine de
numéros et une soixantaine de jeunes impliqués, y
compris l’équipe technique. Bravo au p. Alain, Julie
Tremblay et leur équipe!
La dernière messe à l’église St-Antoine de
Lennoxville - paroisse bilingue de la banlieue- fut
présidée par Mgr André Gaumond le 15 janvier, vu la
fermeture définitive et vente des lieux. Le p. Roméo
concélébrait avec une dizaine d’autres prêtres qui ont
desservi à un moment ou un autre cette communauté
sympathique ces quelques dernières années.
En la fête de St François de Sales, la
communauté a tenu sa récollection mensuelle sur le
thème de la strenna du Recteur Majeur pour 2011,
« Venez et vous verrez » dans une perspective de
pastorale vocationnelle, ayant auparavant lu la lettre
de présentation du RM. - Quelques jours plus tard,
les salésiens coopérateurs de Sherbrooke se
réunirent chez Mme Éliane Bourgault pour leur
rencontre régulière. Un exposé et partage sur le
saint patron des salésiens : Saint François de Sales
dans le cœur de Don Bosco et Saint François de
Sales et l’éducation. Nous avons souhaité un joyeux
anniversaire à notre doyenne Éliane qui célébrait
ses 95 ans ces jours-là, comme aussi à notre
coordinateur, Gilles Léonard, qui célébrait le sien
en la fête même de Don Bosco.
J’ai oublié de vérifier hier l’état d’esprit –
l’esprit de prophétie? – de notre marmotte. …
Plusieurs souhaitent quand même déjà la venue du

SURREY, B.C. New Year’s Day here on the
Pacific Coast ushered in a full seven scheduled
Masses just like the following day, the Feast of the
Epiphany – Sunday, with another seven, intentioned
Masses. Needless to say, it was “blessed busyness”
that welcomed in our New Year’s first two days.
The 4th was a Study Day for our teachers and
Our Lady of Good Counsel School officially swung
into action on January 5th. The Salesian Cooperators
held their first meeting after the First Friday
evening Mass and began their formation talks with
some new recruits. The Adorer’s Pot Luck get
together was held in the Mary Help of Christians
Hall on the 8th after a Holy Hour led by Fr. John.
That Saturday the Polish School held their New
Year’s Party in the School Auditorium under the
direction of Fr. Jan. The Feast of the Baptism of
Our Lord officially brought to conclusion our
Christmas season. The following week all the
Christmas decorations came down and the church
looked quite bare.
Fr. Mario returned safe and sound from the
Philippians just in time to celebrate the Senor Santo
Nino Fiesta on the fifteenth with a special Mass and
blessing of the statues. A reception followed in
OLGC Sch. Auditorium with entertainment and
games.
The 3rd Sunday held the customary Knights
of Columbus Pancake Breakfast after all the
morning Masses in the Don Bosco Gym. Many
families take advantage of this “pay-what-you-can”
service. Bible Study Classes under the direction of
Fr. Dave are now held two nights a week in the
School Library.
The sacrament of Reconciliation was made
available for all the school children, as well as our
Tuesday and Thursday evening CCD and PREP
students, in preparation for the feast of St. John
Bosco. Fr. Dave was the main celebrant for OLGC
Sch. Mass honouring Don Bosco on Friday morning
of the twenty-eight. The school children also
sponsored their customary Don Bosco Basketball
Tournament with other Catholic neighbouring
schools, which was held at the Don Bosco Gym. The
month concluded with Fr. Dave making an
appearance and saying Mass for the Youth for Christ
Regional Leaders’ 3-day Conference that was being
held at the Sheraton Hotel in Guilford, BC- about
ten-and-a-half blocks from the parish. Throughout
this first month of 2011, we saw lots of snow, and
plenty of rain too to wash it away just as fast, damp
and cold as it was. (J.H.)

TORONTO. The New Year commenced slowly as
we got back into community routine after the
Christmas break. From Jan. 8th to 15th our community
welcomed two brothers in formation from Orange,
N.J.: Bros. Dieunel Victor and Paul Chu. They
accompanied the confreres in their diverse ministries
at the parish and in the schools. The accent was on
youth ministries as well as their participation in the
life of our community.
On Jan.8th one of our youth coordinators,
Frankie Iacobazzi, organized the second Don Bosco
Learn sessions together with Fr. Mike on the theme
of the Preventive System. Some 25 persons
participated. - Bro. Bernie has been travelling back
and forth to the USA, first for a provincial council
meeting and then for a scouting visit to Toledo, Ohio,
where there has been a request made by the bishop
for a new Salesian presence.
This past month we held many parishioners’
funerals, among whom was Mr. Leo McKenna, a
long time friend, faithful parishioner and very active
steward of St. Benedict's parish. - Fr. Joe Ho is
presently visiting with his family in Hong Kong until
Feb. 14th. He is also participating in the 50th
anniversary celebrations of his former Salesian
school as well as the Chinese New Year.
This month Fr. Kelly has been very
busy counselling numerous needy souls. - Fr. Mike
accompanied his parents recently for a week in San
Francisco to visit his sister Martese (of the
Missionaries of Charity founded by Mother Teresa),
mistress of novices. At their convent there are over
30 Sisters at various stages of formation. Fr.
Mike delivered daily talks to them in addition to
Masses, homilies and prayer moments. He returned
to TO tired but happy.

MONTREAL. Snow and a polar cold weather
marked the beginning of the year. And with that
came for the confreres, some right from the start,
others later, colds and the flu, malaises typical of
the season.
During the first week, some 20 engaged
couples came to the office to reserve the date of
their marriage for 2012. - On the day preceding the
feast of the Lord’s Baptism, following a meaningful
tradition, the church was filled with “bambini”
baptised in 2010; their families had brought them to
church to thank the Lord for the gift of their new
life in Christ.
Indeed there were 186 baptisms in 2010.
May I add that there were 38 marriages and 124
funerals (the highest number in the 25 years of the
parish). Sad to say, in this month of January, we
conducted 16 funerals, which average one every 2
days. Speaking of statistics, there are 5790 families
registered in the parish.
During the first half of the month, the pastor
organised 4 meetings with the parents of the
children registered for catechism to sensitise them
to their duty as first educators of the faith of their
children who prepare for First Communion and
Confirmation. The team includes Adam Paterno,
animator of the catechetical programme, and Sr.
Francine, animator of the Salesian Sisters at the
Provincial House. (E.T.)

The Feast of Don Bosco
in our Communities
SURREY, B.C. The parish prepared for this special
occasion with a novena in honour of St. John Bosco
that preceded the feast each evening with a special 7
pm Mass complete with music and song. Bro. Jerry
led the 7:30 am Mass in the morning, while Fr. Jan or
Fr. Dave led the 9 am morning Mass.
In grand style and with the Knights of
Columbus honour guard, our special evening was
Saturday, Jan. 29 with a Concelebrated Mass that had
six priests with Fr. Mario as the main celebrant. Our
special 5 pm Mass had a packed congregation with a
pot luck supper afterward in our Don Bosco Gym.
The balcony loft held a mixed choir of over 100
voices, musicians and their instruments which added
great solemnity to the occasion. All the various
parish organizations helped with the food
arrangements and various preparations. A joyous,
spiritual and fun-filled time was had by all.
That afternoon our Salesian Cooperators and
Alumni held an Exercise for a Happy Death –
Salesian style .Fr. Dave directed them with a
reflective talk, and the clergy were available for
confessions. All in preparation for Don Bosco’s feast
that followed with the evening celebration.
On the feastday itself, the Salesians
concelebrated the morning Mass and later were
treated out to an afternoon community meal. Truly
this spiritual event brought St. John Bosco closer and
reminded all of his recent presence among us.
SHERBROOKE. La communauté s’est préparée à
la fête de Don Bosco par la neuvaine traditionnelle
dans les maisons salésiennes. Le point culminant fut
évidemment l’eucharistie en la fête même, présidée
par le directeur, le p. Alain. Les 7 jeunes adultes qui
iront aux Journées Mondiales de la Jeunesse (JMJ) à
Madrid en août furent invités pour l’occasion, mais
on a dû remettre à un autre moment, vu les
occupations de chacun (CEGEP, Université,
travail).Au repas de fête qui a suivi l’eucharistie, on a
fêté le fr. Gérard Richard qui avait atteint le bel âge
de 88 ans la veille.
Comme chaque année, il y eut « Portes
Ouvertes » sur les locaux de la communauté pour les
jeunes de la 1e secondaire. Chaque local visité fournit
l’occasion de présenter le saint comme « homme du
travail, homme de communauté, écrivain et
missionnaire, homme de prière ».
Don Bosco est un personnage rassembleur au
Salésien. La fête scolaire vise à rendre hommage au
grand éducateur. Après le BoscoShow, chacun a reçu
un sac-nylon au logo du Salésien & DB, et un signet
au titre, Le Salésien, ça me passionne!
MONTREAL The confreres prepared for the feast
with a mini retreat on the 27th. After reflecting on
the life and work of St.Francis de Sales, we
celebrated the Mass of Don Bosco. On the evening
of Saturday the 29th, a good number of people were
present for the Eucharist presided by Fr. Richard
and concelebrated by the other members of the
community. During the bilingual Mass, the choir
executed hymns that nourished the devotion of the
faithful.
After Mass, some 400 persons, adults and
children, gathered at the Buffet Colosseo to share a
family dinner accompanied with singing, games and
dancing. During dinner, the guests had the happy
surprise of being told the names of the 12 young
adults who will participate at the World Youth Days
in Madrid this coming August.
On Sunday, the day preceding the liturgical
feast, we recalled the figure of the saint at every
Eucharist, the Gospel text of the Sunday on the
Beatitudes lending itself beautifully for speaking of
the saint.
TORONTO. This year for the feast of Don Bosco
we had an afternoon of Winterdaze (i.e. activities
with about 200 summer campers) concluding with
the 5 P.M. Mass, music and animation. - Fr. George
was invited to St. Aidan's parish to speak on Don
Bosco to the numerous Italian, Maltese and Filipino
past pupils. - On Sunday 30th, the Mass was that of
St.John Bosco with homily on the saint. Then on
Monday the 31st our local community celebrated the
Eucharist together at the 8 a.m. parish Mass. This
was followed in the evening with a festive dinner.

LE CARDINAL STEFAN TROCHTA
Il y a cent cinq ans naquit Stefan Trochta
(1905-1974), prêtre salésien, évêque, cardinal. Il
vécut – et a souffert!- d’abord sous le régime nazi,
puis celui du communisme; il survécut aux deux.
« Le Seigneur nous a donné un exemple
resplendissant et presque bouleversant de fidélité »
a écrit de lui le Recteur Majeur, don Ricceri. Stefan
vient en Italie pour étudier et fut « saisi » par Don
Bosco : il fit son lycée à Valsalice et la théologie à
La Crocetta de Turin. Puis il retourna dans sa
Bohème natale, à Frysak, la première œuvre de la
Tchécoslovaquie d’alors, puis à Moravka Ostrava, le
plus grand centre minier du pays. Enfin il alla à
Prague, où il fut le directeur de la première œuvre de
cette ville en 1936. Enthousiaste des jeunes, il se
dévouait tellement pour eux qu’il fut nommé
aumônier national des scouts. Puis commença sa
« passion ».
L’occupant nazi de 1939 l’inscrivit sur la liste
noire de l’infâme Gestapo; ce prêtre était trop
influent, trop dangereux. Un jour on vient l’arrêter; il
est interné à Terezin, puis à Mathausen, et enfin à
Dachau. Ses souffrances commencèrent aussitôt. À
Terezin, quand le commandant du camp fit dévêtir
tous les prisonniers, voyant que lui avait le poing
fermé, il le frappa violemment au dos. La main
s’ouvrit et… un chapelet tomba par terre. Le
lagerkommandant le piétina et puis, d’un coup de
pied, l’enleva de vue. Miracle ou non, quelque temps
après, le chapelet fut remis à sa mère. Elle commença
aussitôt à le prier- pour son fils Stefan- chaque soir.
À Mathausen, après une décimation
(exécution de chaque dixième prisonnier en ligne), il
fut contraint à charger les cadavres sur des charrettes,
envoyés au crématoire. À la fin, il se traînait à peine.
Un garde, « par pitié », déchargea son arme sur lui et
le jeta dans la charrette parmi les autres cadavres.
Durant le trajet, il reprit connaissance et eut la
présence d’esprit de se laisser tomber de la charrette
et de rouler dans le fossé. Il fut sauvé par miracle.
Le martyre prit fin avec la fin de la guerre et
il put retourner à Prague et reprendre son travail. Sa
renommée crût de plus en plus, à tel point que
personne ne s’étonna lorsque Pie XII le nomma
évêque. Son diocèse était Litomerice, lequel comptait
107 prêtres et 449 paroisses. Il y avait à se relever les
manches!
Puis vint la prise du pouvoir par les
communistes. Encore une fois, l’évêque est dans le
point de mire. En 1953, il est arrêté, emprisonné.
Après un semblant de procès, il est condamné à 25
ans de prison pour « haute trahison et espionnage
pour le Vatican ». Libéré en 1960, on lui défend
toutefois d’exercer son ministère épiscopal. On lui
impose de se trouver un emploi. Ainsi
Monsieur Trochta devient un manuel, maçon,
concierge, etc. Mais le physique, déjà éprouvé par la
première déportation, ne peut résister. Il subit deux
infarctus qu’il surmonte péniblement.
En 1968 survint le printemps de Prague,
dont le leader est Alexandre Dubcek : une lueur
d’espoir et de liberté pour un peuple opprimé.
Gracié, il put reprendre ses fonctions de pasteur de
son diocèse. Même souffrant et fatigué, il se donne
corps et âme : il y a des édifices et des églises à
réparer, il faut renouveler les vêtements et objets
sacrés, organiser la catéchèse, etc. En 1973, il
apprend qu’il est cardinal déjà depuis 1969, ayant
été nommé in pectore (en secret) par Paul VI. Un an
plus tard, il décède, emporté par un infarctus.
Encore faut-il ajouter que cela survint après
plusieurs heures d’interrogatoire par les autorités
communistes.
Il fut regretté par tous les fidèles. Plusieurs
rappelaient que lorsqu’il était déjà évêque, les
jeunes allaient le trouver et il leur disait : Les gars!
Aujourd’hui j’ai beaucoup à faire. Asseyez-vous là.
Vous pouvez me regarder faire, mais pour ne pas
me déranger, voici! Mangez ceci! » et il leur
présentait un panier de bonbons et de gâteaux.
