Through his impressive creativity Andra Kouyaté shows us how traditional instruments can be used without
any limitations in very different musical styles ranging from the old music from his ancestors to experimental
jazz sounds.
Andra Kouyaté has invented, designed and built a new instrument: the bass n’goni, sort of an African contrabass. This invention has permitted him to develop a new way of playing, quite different from the more
usual traditional n'goni. He is gifted with exceptional playing skills on both musical and rhythmical level.
Equally striking is Andra's unusual dark warm voice that reflects the different moods of his songs and occasionally serves as an additional instrument.
His approach to music, his sensitivity and charism and also his power and playing technique make him a
real virtuoso multi-instrumentalist.
Andra Kouyaté Reveal the Innovative Spirit and Polyglot Funk in Mali’s Deepest Roots In some musically
vibrant corners of the world, innovation is the tradition. So it is in Mali, where the sounds of the Saharan
north have mingled with an array of West African traditions in the south. Andra Kouyaté show how his
homeland’s deep and diverse roots are a constant source of innovative inspiration. Andra’s stunning ability to embrace not only all the musical possibilities of Mali’s many traditions, but also a relentless drive to
create and re-imagine the music he loves. At the same time, Andra’s part in the long chain of tradition
and musical griot family marked by a restless, joyful creativity and innovation. He’s a master of incorporating new elements and sounds into songs he has heard and played his entire life.
Andra has toured the world with Grammy-nominated global indie favorites, Toumani Diabaté, Habib Koité,
created with his brother Bassekou Kouyaté The Ngoni Ba; spent almost a decade with Rokia Traore; and
recently touring with Tiken Jah Fakoly.
Andra Kouyate is one of the two holdovers, and when you hear their amazing modern-meets-traditional West African sound, it's no wonder why they're at #1
SoundRoots / Spin The Globe World Music Top 10.
