About our honourees
Those who know Freda and Irwin Browns, know that they have always led very active lives – being
involved with their family, travelling the world over and doing community work. At the JPL, Irwin has
been a member of the Development Advisory Committee and Freda has been a Director and Officer of
the Board, has worked in the archives, and been a ubiquitous volunteer!
The JPL has been a Berman-Lighter family tradition through three generations. It is an honour to be
honoured! We are very proud of what the library has become - a true cultural centre for a diverse
community....Pearl and Saul Lighter.
Over many years, Chava and Ingie Respitz have both been extensively involved in the Jewish
community but never in the same organization. The library is the first experience where they share
the same passion.
Helen and Jerrick Segal have been married 57 years – their proudest achievement being their
children and grandchildren. They share a passion for theatre, music, biking, skiing, spending time in
the country, being with good friends........and especially, share a love of the JPL!
About the Show
The award winning and critically acclaimed Zero Hour is a one-person play written & performed by playwright & actor Jim Brochu. In a biographical reflection on Zero Mostel, Brochu portrays the Jewish actor
& comedian giving a fictional interview with an unseen New York Times reporter shortly before Mostel’s
death in 1977. Brochu’s Mostel recounts his life & career; he describes the impact of the Hollywood blacklist on himself & his friends, including his testimony before the House Un-American Activities Committee,
as well as his success with A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Fiddler on the Roof and the
original movie version of The Producers.
The Jewish Public Library was established in 1914 and serves the community in five languages. For
96 years the Library has honoured its commitment to promote Jewish values, knowledge and cultural
heritage. The Library also provides a full range of services to meet the cultural, educational, informational and recreational needs of the Jewish and non-Jewish communities alike.
Committee Members: Mia Swartzman Barsheshat and Janie Respitz (Co-chairs), Freda Browns, Irwin
