June 2014
As summer gets ever closer and we start to feel a few rays of sunshine, it is time to start
California dreaming - and that is exactly what we are doing here at Avenue…
This month, we are celebrating New Wave California - the new, modern approach to
winemaking by a group of pioneering producers, who are using less traditional grape
varieties and focusing on balance and finesse with outstanding results.
Look out for two great tastings, wine flights and competitions; but most importantly, there
are 22 fantastic Californian wines for you to try by the bottle or glass.
I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

New California’s winemakers share similar sensibilities: an enthusiasm for lessons learned
from the Old World, but not the desire to replicate it’s wines; a mandate to seek out new
grape varieties and regions; and, perhaps most important, an ardent belief that place
matters. They are the true believers in terroir.

This cult classic winery is almost always in the news. Between their Rockstar
winemaker Randall Grahm, being one of the founding members of the Rhone Rangers and
the very high quality this estate puts out each year, there is a lot to talk about. If we focus
on their lovely Vin Gris, this is the rosé that will change your mind about American Rosé.
It has a elegant Provençal character with Strawberry Puree notes and a light creaminess.

Santa Maria Valley, California.
Au Bon Climat means "a well-exposed vineyard" and they are located on the
northern end of California's Santa Barbara County, across from the fabled Bien Nacido
Vineyard. Au Bon Climat, also known as ABC only make wine from Chardonnay and Pinot
Noir and focus their efforts to make a wine that is Burgundian in character but American
in heart.

This wine is made with a belief that all grapes should be sustainably grown, farmed
organically or biodynamically and minimal intervention should be used in the winery. With
that philosophy, Broc Cellars is slowly becoming one of the most exciting wineries in
California. Their Cab Franc is spicy and autumnal while still keeping a ripeness to it. A
must try!
