When you know that up until the end of the XIXth century, women were bathing in trousers, corsets or other types of clothing that hid the largest area of their bodies, you’d have to say that the present day swimsuit must have followed fashion to be where it is today. When in 1946, the first two piece bathing suit was worn at the Casino of Paris, Javanne was created in Mouscron. Originally, it manufactured sweaters then jersey outfits. After this, it specialised in making sportswear sold under the Agiva brand, explains Christophe Van Oost, who chairs the company created by his great uncle. Today, the company proposes a choice of models divided into two annual collections (winter : swimming, workout, dance, fitness, running; summer : swimwear for the beach). We supply to the largest European producers of elastic fabrics most of which are based in Italy. Javanne who employs around thirty persons, exports more than 50% of its production all over Europe. It’s nearly four years since Christophe Van Oost integrated design into the different products. Faced with a market which has become very competitive and large retailers who are constantly cutting prices, we have to differentiate and above all personalise our swimwear. Thanks to design, we’ve been able to follow the trends. In this way, for example, we can opt for the right association of colours for the season, or we can reflect on the usefulness or not of an accessory like a belt, a buckle or a link. But he who says design also imposes a “new look” logo, the creation of a new website and a global creative identity. I don’t know where we would be if we hadn’t have taken design into account. It has allowed us to differentiate ourselves from our competitors. The consequence has been to make Agiva the Belgian leader in swimwear. Each year, Javanne produces more than 150 000 pieces for a turnover totalling 2,2 million euros. The swimsuit represents one third of the clothing items, the remaining two thirds are dedicated to workout and dance outfits. The colours that are in fashion ? Pure black and blue have given way to dark browns. Purple, which had disappeared, is back in force, as is grey… There’s no doubt that fashion also comes around by design. M.I.
