The Guangzhou Encyclopaedia is an unprecedented effort to preserve, document and disseminate “Cantonese” or “Yue” culture
which includes a language, highly evolved forms of art, music and literature, and one of the outstanding cuisines of China. The
Encyclopaedia covers a period of 2,200 years and includes 3,504 documents, paintings, testimonials, music and other forms of
expression ranging from the “classics” to folk art.
Many of the older documents are at risk. For this reason, the Encyclopaedia is an urgent undertaking in conservation, calling for
new methods of preservation and restoration. The entire collection contains approximately 300 million Chinese characters and its
compilation has taken 10 years.
Because of trade and as the gateway to the Southern Silk Road, Guangzhou’s cultural influence spread far and wide. Traces of
Cantonese culture are found as of the 14th century in Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. By the
19th century the Chinese diaspora further spread Cantonese culture to Africa , the Americas and Europe. Cantonese is widely
spoken by Chinese communities in Argentina, Canada, Brazil, Panama, Peru, Australia, New Zealand, the U.K. and the USA
where many cultural artefacts and records are also found. For this reason, the Guangzhou Encyclopaedia, from the very start, was
conceived as an international endeavour.
The “spirit” that underscores Cantonese culture is also significant. It embodies actions that have been at the forefront of social
movements against injustice, corrupt rule and foreign invaders. Thus major movements from the 13th century onwards including
the Opium War, the struggle against 18th century colonialism and the founding of the first Republic of China in 1912 were either
led by or received major impetus from sons and daughters from Guangzhou. For this reason, the Guangzhou Encyclopaedia is
conceived as a living encyclopaedia to enable people from all walks of life to contribute to and benefit from its content.

La Enciclopedia de Guangzhou es una colección exclusiva de libros y registros históricos de Guangzhou que abarcan un período
de 2.200 años. Comprende más de 4.000 tipos diferentes de documentos compilados en 540 volúmenes, cada uno de los cuales
consta de más de 800 páginas de tamaño A4. La colección completa incluye aproximadamente 300 millones de caracteres
chinos (palabras).
La Enciclopedia comprende el período que abarca desde aproximadamente el año 214 AC hasta 1911 DC, con algunos registros
que llegan hasta 1949. En términos geográficos, la Enciclopedia cubre 18 condados y ciudades, incluso Hong Kong y Macao, que
estaban bajo la jurisdicción de la provincia de Guangzhou durante la dinastía Qing. Esta cobertura guarda una correspondencia
aproximada con lo que hoy en día es el Delta del Río de las Perlas (cerca de 56.000 km2 y una población de 120 millones de
habitantes).
La Enciclopedia de Guangzhou ha sido compilada a partir de los libros encontrados en la Biblioteca Sun Yat-sen de la Provincia
de Guangdong, la Biblioteca de la Universidad de Sun Yat-sen y de copias originales de más de 1.000 libros y registros
provenientes de más de 100 bibliotecas de todo el mundo. Se reprodujeron todos estos libros y registros de antigua data para
retener los formatos y contenidos originales.

La recopilación de la Enciclopedia demoró 10 años, y permite que los lectores tengan acceso a una colección exclusiva de libros
preciosos y registros antiguos, sin tener que buscar o manipular originales. Esto facilita en gran medida la investigación y
contribuye a preservar los libros y registros originales.
Aunque aún no ha sido publicada en línea, la Enciclopedia ya está cambiando las percepciones del patrimonio cultural de
Guangzhou a través de información que ahora resulta accesible, contribuyendo a fortalecer la sensación de pertenecer y el
civismo.

L’encyclopédie de Guangzhou est une collection unique de livres qui couvre 2 200 ans. Elle comprend plus de 4 000 différents
types de documents, compilés en 540 volumes. Chaque volume est constitué de 800 pages A4. L’entière collection contient
approximativement 300 millions de caractères chinois (mots).
L’encyclopédie couvre une période depuis environ 214 av. JC jusqu’à 1911, avec quelques entrées couvrant la période jusqu’à
1949. D’un point de vue géographique, l’encyclopédie couvre 18 pays et villes, y compris Hong-Kong et Macao, sous la juridiction
de la préfecture de Guangzhou pendant la dynastie des Qing. Cette couverture correspond grosso modo au Delta de la rivière
des Perles d’aujourd’hui – environ 56 000 km2 et une population de 120 millions de personnes.
L’encyclopédie de Guangzhou a été compilée à partir de livres trouvés à la bibliothèque de Sun Yat-sen, de la province de
Guangdong, de la bibliothèque universitaire de Sun Yat-sen et à partir de copies originales de plus de 1 000 livres et archives
provenant de plus de 1 000 bibliothèques dans tout le monde. Ces livres et archives anciens ont été reproduits afin de conserver
leurs formats et contenus originaux.
La compilation de l’encyclopédie a pris plus de 10 ans ; elle permet aux lecteurs d’accéder à une collection unique de livres
précieux et d’archives anciennes sans avoir à rechercher ou manipuler les documents originaux. Ceci facilite grandement la
recherche et aide à préserver les livres et archives anciens originaux.
L’encyclopédie, bien qu’elle ne soit pas encore disponible en ligne, change déjà les perceptions de l’héritage culturel de
Guangzhou à travers de nouvelles informations accessibles, et contribue au renforcement du sens du lieu et de la conscience
civique.
