At the end of the summer, we reported on the
fact that the basement of St. Sava's Church,
which we use for theater classes and other
activities, had been badly damaged by
flooding during a rainstorm at the end of July.
The damaged areas included the stage itself,
which has to be completely replaced. We
have therefore, as you know, been unable to
use the church basement, which we rent on
an annual basis from the church.
In late August, the church told us they hoped
to have their renovation finished by early this
month; but, as so often happens, the work has taken much longer
than expected. Right now, workers are installing a low stone wall
around a good part of the perimeter of the church in order to
prevent future flooding, and restoration of the interior has not
advanced very far.
They now tell us that the earliest we can expect to resume use of the
facility will be January. This is of course unfortunate, since our three
drama teachers have had to make do without a real stage, and we
are grateful to them for their ingenuity and patience in adapting to
conditions that are far from ideal.
The one piece of good news is that we are able to take advantage
of the renovation process to produce a much finer theater
facility than existed before the flooding. Since the stage has to be
entirely replaced, the church will install a more elevated platform,
improving sight lines in the hall. ISB for its part will take the opportunity
to pay for the installation of improved lighting and sound systems. So,
while we will have suffered for at least four months without the use of
a facility that we have come to count on, we will at least have a far
better space for theater classes and productions in the future.
Since we are now one month into our annual ISB Fund For Excellence
campaign, I want to add as a footnote that the lighting and sound
systems are a perfect example of the improvements we are able to
make every year because of the generous contributions of our
community. This year we may not be undertaking a grand project on

the scale of the library or the science lab; but every year we spend
considerable sums on a number of smaller projects such as this that
greatly improve our facilities and the educational experience of our
children.
The regular tuition fees pay for all the day-to-day costs of providing
an excellent education. These extra enhancements, on the other
hand, depend upon your support. As the year progresses and our
needs are clarified, other special projects will be confirmed and
announced. Our heartfelt thanks therefore go to those of you who
have already contributed to the 2014-15 Fund, and especially to our
Faculty and Staff, who have so far made over half the gifts we have
received. And merci d'avance to all those who will make donations,
of whatever size, in the coming months.

À la fin de l'été, nous vous avions informés que le sous-sol de l'église
Ste-Sava que nous utilisons pour les cours de théâtre et autres
activités, avait été sérieusement endommagé par une inondation
lors d'un orage à la fin juillet. Les parties endommagées
comprennent la scène elle-même qui doit être entièrement
remplacée. Comme vous le savez, nous sommes, depuis, dans

À la fin août, les responsables de l'église nous ont dit qu'ils espéraient
pouvoir terminer les travaux de rénovation début novembre. Mais,
comme c'est souvent le cas, ces travaux ont pris plus longtemps que
prévu. À l'heure actuelle, les ouvriers procèdent à l'installation d'un
muret de pierre destiné à renforcer une grande partie du périmètre
de l'église afin d'éviter une nouvelle inondation. De ce fait, la
restauration de l'intérieur a pris du retard.
Ces responsables nous disent, maintenant, que nous ne pouvons pas
compter sur l'utilisation du sous-sol avant janvier. Ceci est, bien sûr,
très décevant, étant donné que nos trois professeurs de théâtre ont
dû s'arranger pour travailler sans véritable scène. Nous leur sommes
très reconnaissants des trésors d'ingéniosité et de patience qu'ils ont
déployés afin de s'adapter à des conditions qui sont loin d'être
idéales.
La bonne nouvelle est que nous pouvons profiter de cette rénovation
pour bénéficier d'un espace de théâtre d'une qualité supérieure à ce
que nous avions avant l'inondation. Comme la scène doit être
entièrement remplacée, l'église va installer une estrade plus élevée,
ce qui améliorera les angles de vue de la salle. Le LIB, pour sa part,
va en profiter pour financer l'installation des systèmes d'éclairage et
de son. Même si, pendant quatre mois, nous aurons souffert de ne
pas pouvoir utiliser un espace sur lequel nous avions compté, nous
pourrons, à l'avenir, profiter d'un meilleur local pour nos cours et nos
spectacles de théâtre.
Le mois dernier, nous avons lancé la campagne d'automne du Fonds
d'Excellence du LIB. Changer les systèmes d'éclairage et de son sont
un parfait exemple des améliorations que nous apportons
régulièrement grâce aux généreux dons de notre communauté.
Cette année, nous n'entreprendrons sans doute pas de projet aussi
grandiose que la médiathèque ou que le laboratoire de sciences
mais, chaque année, nous dépensons des sommes considérables
pour des projets plus modestes tels que celui-ci, dans le but
d'améliorer nos bâtiments ainsi que l'expérience pédagogique de
nos élèves.

Les frais de scolarité couvrent les dépenses courantes afin d'offrir une
éducation d'excellence, tandis que ces améliorations
supplémentaires dépendent de votre soutien. Au fur et à mesure que
l'année s'avance et que nos besoins sont identifiés, d'autres projets
spécifiques seront confirmés et annoncés. Nous adressons donc
nosremerciements les plus chaleureux à tous ceux qui ont participé
au fonds 2014-2015, en particulier à nos enseignants et membres du
personnel qui ont contribué pour plus de la moitié des dons que nous
