December’s question of the month “What is your holiday tradition?” The following texts are an editorial collaboration with Daniel St-Onge. mont-bellevue OUR BOROUGH: 2014 ACHIEVEMENTS Over the past year, the Borough of Mont-Bellevue has been busy improving the infrastructure of its various parks and play areas for the enjoyment of residents of all ages. Parking at Parc Lucien-Blanchard The parking lot at Parc Lucien-Blanchard received a facelift through landscaping work on the part facing the park and the beach. Play structure Parc Andrew-Sangster has been equipped with an all-new play structure. Specially designed for children ages two to five, this attractive structure fully funded by the Borough of Mont-Bellevue complements the park’s existing play structure. Fence at Parc Alfred-Élie-Dufresne As per its urban development plan focused on improving access to its parks, the Borough decided to demolish the traditional ball field at Parc Alfred-Élie-Dufresne and replace it with a green space, which will be completed in the spring. Please note that the skating rink will still be set up there in the winter, for friendly hockey enthusiasts in particular. Skatepark As we know, using a skateboard or longboard on Sherbrooke streets is forbidden. A $50 fine may be issued in the event of non-compliance with the by-law. To make this sport accessible and safe, the Borough has taken down Parc Belvédère’s existing skate park to build a new one, which will be functional as of next spring and may also be used for BMX practice. Signs in Parc du Mont-Bellevue Further to numerous comments from hikers and cross-country skiers that it was sometimes difficult to get your bearings on Mont Bellevue’s trails in the summer and winter, the Borough agreed to redo all of the signs in the park. This work should be finished by summer 2015, making it easier for park users to find their way. Familifête Held on August 23 and 24 at Parc Alguéric-Bussière, the 28th edition of Familifête, organized by Carrefour accès loisirs, has become a veritable tradition. The warm weather was appreciated by the 2000 people in attendance. The Saturday was full of activities for children with a petting zoo, inflatable games, face painting, as well as crafts led by the Maison des Grands-Parents. On the big stage, Ateliers Sankofa gave dance and percussion performances, followed by the Son de Cuba group, and the trio featuring Jean-François Dubé (Noir Silence singer). Sunday morning, 350 people attended the multicultural mass that preceded a performance by the group Harmonie. The organizing committee would like to thank its partners and sponsors: the Borough of Mont-Bellevue, the Caisse Desjardins de Sherbrooke, the Fondation Jean Coutu, and François Maltais, as well as the many volunteers, without whom this event could not have been held. The Borough’s Fête des familles On September 28, a wonderfully sunny day, the Borough of Mont-Bellevue welcomed families at the foot of Mont Bellevue as part of the annual Fête des familles. Children and adults enjoyed inflatable games, crafts, a treasure hunt, face painting, go-karting, not to mention the popular healthy food booth. Sherbrooke’s fire fighters and police officers were present once again came to demonstrate their equipment. The big stage featured shows and performances. Mont Bellevue’s summit was accessible by chairlift, where attendees could take in the beautiful fall colours. The Fête des familles is a great opportunity to highlight community spirit and the harmony among our fellow citizens! Voisinage en Fête Photo: Daniel St-Onge Borough Services The Fête de l’été in Parc Andrew-Sangster The goal of this simple celebration, held on August 10, is to bring together the Borough’s diverse communities for a chance to meet each other. Supported by neighbourhood businesses, it is organized by a committee of borough residents for Commun’Action Sainte-Jeanne d’Arc. This year, the committee consisted of Aurélie Marcil, Isabelle Larivière, and Antoni Daigle, and it was assisted by roughly 30 volunteers. Inflatable games, a juggler, and a performance enlivened this festive afternoon. Very little waste was generated as participants used compostable tableware kindly provided by Écoloboutique. AMITRAD, a musical group of youth from the neighbourhood, delighted the young and young at heart. In short, it was an enjoyable neighbourhood party that attracted more than 450 people. See you next year! Voisinage en Fête More than 1700 residents came out for the 22nd edition of Voisinage en Fête, which was held on September 7 at the Parc Belvédère. The ultimate event to bring together residents of all origins, this great neighbourhood party exceeded expectations once again. More than just an entertaining event, Voisinage en Fête is unique in terms of the participation of community organizations that work in the Borough. Each had a kiosk for people to discover the various services available to them and the many activities offered. mont-bellevue Our Borough’s residents truly enjoyed the summer celebrations that were held in their respective neighbourhoods. In the end, they felt a bit like they were among family! Adding this equipment meets a need as the young ski school students previously went up the hill on a snowmobile. The new magic carpet at Mont Bellevue follows ski lift No. 1, not far from the Antonio-Pinard chalet and trail No. 1. The magic carpet ski lift is 120 metres (400 feet) long and it can accommodate 1400 people per hour. The Ville de Sherbrooke authorized the purchase of this magic carpet ski lift for the amount of $40 000 from the Mont-Orford ski station. Note that a new magic carpet would have cost more than $250 000. Retrofitting and installing the magic carpet required an additional disbursement of $50 000. As roughly 50 trees had to be cut down to provide safe access to the mountain, next fall other trees will be planted in various places in the city to compensate for this necessary deforestation. Set in motion in 2012, the Quartier du Ménestrel construction site in the Ascot sector of the Borough of Mont-Bellevue is still in full operation. This ambitious housing project by Entreprises Lachance plans to build 600 single-family, semi-detached, and townhouse style homes. Nestled between Sara and Thibault streets, the Quartier du Ménestrel has created four new streets: De l’Aurore-Boréale, Des Mille-Abeilles, Du Soir-d’Hiver, and Du Vaisseau-d’Or. The street names were chosen to honour Québec poetry. The magnitude of the work can be seen by visiting the site. “We are on rock and had to use dynamite,” said the company’s General Manager, Patrick Lachance, who added that all materials are recycled onsite, with the stone and topsoil being reused for levelling and landscaping. As these lines are being written, rue de l’Aurore-Boréale has been constructed and, to the west of it, along the length of the three other streets, the construction of row houses is underway. The result of an investment of more than $120M, the Quartier du Ménestrel will indisputably contribute to revitalizing the social and economic life of Ascot through its proximity to École internationale du Phare, École primaire Jean-XXIII, the Borough office, Parc Belvédère and various local neighbourhood businesses. This development fits in perfectly with the Ville de Sherbrooke’s new land use plan, in that it meets the criteria to develop its territory on a north-south axis. She joined Serge Paquin in honouring the memory of Bruno Léger, the Borough’s recreation technician since 2005, who died prematurely on September 21. Bruno was well-liked by all who knew him, for his availability, involvement, and great kindness. After the traditional door prize draws, the evening came to a close with the presentation of a play entitled Dieu merci, on en profite, a colourful performance by CARAGS’ amateur theatre troupe, which delighted all who attended. All in all, a great recognition evening – an opportunity to remember that the work of volunteers is key to meeting social and community needs at all levels. mont-bellevue For yet another year, the Borough of Mont-Bellevue’s elected officials paid tribute to the volunteers who enhance the lives of their fellow citizens. This event took place on October 8 at the Centre d’activités récréatives aux aînés et autres générations de Sherbrooke (CARAGS), located in the Immaculée-Conception church basement. At the event, a delicious evening meal prepared by Buffet et méchoui Sylvie et François was served to the many volunteers in attendance. The meal was followed by a speech by Borough President, Serge Paquin, who, on behalf of his colleagues, eloquently noted the importance of volunteers in our society. We also took the opportunity to pay special tribute to the lifelong involvement of Georgette Banville by recapping her career as a much-appreciated nurse and an involved woman. She warmly thanked the Borough’s Borough Services Volunteer tribute Georgette Banville was honoured by elected officials Nicole Gagnon, Jean-François Rouleau, and Serge Paquin, who presented her with a wonderful painting. InfoSherbrookois | Winter 2014-2015 153 Borough Services The Bouffe ton Centro event was clearly a resounding success this past summer, delighting the gourmet and melodic tastes of downtown enthusiasts. Commerce Sherbrooke hopes the same will be true for this winter’s activities. First, the not-to-be-missed Santa Claus parade was held on November 30, started at 13e Avenue and followed King from east to west, ending at the Marché de la Gare. And of course the Christmas market will run from December 4 to 21 at the Marché de la Gare. In keeping with tradition, the site will be aglow with lights, especially following the lighting of the majestic Christmas tree. Once again this year, downtown business folks are invited to take part in the contest Pour Noël Décore ton Centro. At the same time, the Gagne ton bas de Noël du Centro contest will take place from November 17 to December 17. It is open to everyone with a chance to win one of three Christmas stockings (gift certificates from downtown merchants) valued at $500 each. Details at lecentro.co. At the end of March the festive Carnaval de Sherbrooke returns with its famous slide and zip line right on King hill! All events are aimed at shortening, at least in our hearts, our winter that is always too long...
