The children have been delving into more reading and writing in all
Décembre The children have been delving into more reading and writing in all French classes along with as much speaking as possible at each session. These two skills are adapted to each age group. Reading is a complex but very important process that becomes the link between speech and writing. When the children are ready to read in French, they are able to build on the knowledge and skills developed through oral communication. Writing is a complex process likewise involving a wide range of skills and tasks. In French class, students acquire strategies and techniques that foster proficient writing at a basic level. Language manipulation begins in Kindergarten where the children have been looking at big pictures of familiar situations and matching them with simple sentences written in big letters. They also show comprehension by illustrating simple sentences. In grade 1, they are able to combine big pictures with words and phrases to form new sentences. In second grade and up they are gradually equipped to do more. They view sentences from a familiar text that have some words missing and choose a word that would be appropriate in that context. The progress from one year to the next and with each grade level is amazing. A student in his or her third year (or beyond) of language learning, using this approach, can move at a much faster rate than a younger student. At this level, they are also able to begin creative story writing, cooperatively with much support from the teacher, at first and gradually, they are able to work independently, either with a partner or with a group. Yet each one’s confidence and fluency with the language is developing and is being strengthened through these kinds of scaffolding activities. The main focus in French class remains the same, no matter what the task at hand may be: speaking and producing the language, as much as possible.
