Italian Design With its plethora of high-quality companies, craftsmen, editors and designers, Northern Italy became the nerve-centre for Design during the second half of the 20th century. The auction retraces the history of Italian Design from this period through a selection of works by its most iconic figures. Gio Ponti (1891-1979), the godfather of Italy’s post-war Design renaissance, is represented by an unusual Modernist desk in natural and lacquered wood, complete with magazine-rack (est. €55,000-75,000) – typical of the ingenious Ponti style in both its sharp-edged geometry, spatial economy and ingenious wall-unit. The desk was first made in plain wood before appearing in a coloured version three years later, at the celebrated Milan Triennale of 1957. Piero Fornasetti (1913-88), subject of a major retrospective at the Paris Musée des Arts Décoratifs in 2015, is a key name on the Italian artistic scene. His zany baroque world is represented here by two chairs that embody the whimsy and charm of Italian culture (€1500-2300 / €2000-3000). The architect Claudio Salocchi (born 1939), a leading apostle of an all-embracing creative approach to interior design, is represented by a remarkable destructured bookcase in lacquered wood and Brazilian rosewood (est. €15,000-20,000). Salocchi’s work, with its fragmented forms that stretch out and extend in a centrifugal manner, exudes true expressive mastery. 2 Claudio Salocchi (né en 1934) Centro Bibliothèque Palissandre Edition Sormani date de création : 1960 H 200 × L 75 × l 76 cm 15 000 / 20 000 € 3 Gio Ponti Bureau et étagère Bois et mélaminé Date de création : 1957 H 80,5 x L 150 x P 50 cm (bureau) H 45 x L 150 x P 10 cm (étagère) Modèle présenté à la onzième Triennale de Milan 55 000 / 75 000 € 4 Gio Ponti (1891-1979) Modèle 811 Fauteuil Bois et tissu Edition Cassina Date de création : 1957 H 87 x L 109 x P 70 cm 15 000/ 20 000€ 5 Carlo Mollino (1905-1973) Table Chêne Edition Ettore Canali Date de création : vers 1954 H 78 x L 79 x P 79 cm Provenance : Casa del Sole Apartments, Cervinia, Italie 50 000 / 70 000 € 6 Pierluigi Ghianda: The Poet of Wood Pierluigi Ghianda (born 1926) hails from a family of carpenters. He and his wife took over the family firm in 1967, lending it new impetus by collaborating with the most important designers of the period. From Ettore Sottsass to the Castiglioni brothers, via Gio Ponti and Gae Aulenti, Pierluigi Ghianda and his workshop have supported some of the most glorious names of Made In Italy Design. Photo D.R. 7 ‘Anyone who has worked with Pierluigi knows that you only have to speak with him to gain inspiration’ – Piero Castiglioni His skill, love of wood and spiritual entente with other artists have made Pierluigi Ghianda Italy’s most respected master-carpenter. One of his most distinguished collaborators was Gianfranco Frattini. They started working together after a trip to Japan, combining the uncompromising creativity of the designer with the craftsmanship of the furniture-maker, to create masterpieces like their Kioto dining-table (est. €6,000-8,000). Another important collaborator with Ghianda was Ettore Sottsass. The PIASA sale features the prototype of their hugely popular, brightly coloured Carlton bookcase (est. €10,000-15,000). Although a pre-eminent figure in the history of international design, Pierluigi Ghianda has always kept a low profile. As Aldo Cibic, of the Memphis Group, once said: ‘On entering a place like the the Ghianda Workshop, you become aware of what excellence means.’ Gianfranco Frattini (1926-2004) Kioto Buffet en hêtre Un des deux seuls exemplaires réalisés par Pierluigi Ghianda Date de création : 1974 H 67 x 52,5 x L 163 cm 4 000 / 6 000 € 8 Ettore Sottsass (1917-2007) Meuble de rangement en pin Edition Pierluigi Ghianda, limitée à 10 exemplaires plus un Date de création : vers 1980 H 151 x L 96 x P 56 cm Modèle réalisé pour la galerie Calvi Volpi 10 000 / 15 000€ 9 Ettore Sottsass (1917-2007) Carlton Bibliothèque Prototype de la bibliothèque Carlton réalisé par Pierluigi Ghianda pour Ettore Sottsass Bois stratifié Date de création : 1980-1981 H 195,5 x L 190 x P 40 cm 10 000 / 15 000 € 10 Gianfranco Frattini (1926-2004) Kioto Table de salle à manger en hêtre Pièce unique réalisée par Pierluigi Ghianda Date de création : 1974 H 71 x L 146 cm 6 000 / 8 000 € 11 Sculptures de gauche à droite : Pino Tovaglia (1923-1977) Pierluigi Ghianda (1926-2015) Sculpture en bois H 22,5 x L 16 x P 10 cm Sculpture en bois H 32 cm 500 / 800 € 500 / 800 € Sergio Bianco et Giovanni Sacchi Sculpture en bois et feuille dorée Date de création : 2000 H 57 x Ø 34 cm 500 / 800 € Pierluigi Ghianda (1926-2015) Pierluigi Ghianda (1926-2015) Sculpture en bois H 39 x Ø 23 cm Sculpture en bois H 39 x L 17 x P 17 cm 500 / 800 € 500 / 800 € 12 Design department François Epin Archibald Pearson-de Brantes Johanna Colombatti Alix de Saint-Hilaire Éléonore Floret www.piasa.fr 13
