If you are replacing or rebuilding a transmission, chances are it is because the inner workings are worn beyond use. This includes the friction plates, bushings and bearings. Even under normal conditions, transmission parts wear and leave a trail of metal, carbon, friction material and other harmful contaminants in the oil. All of this stuff has been flowing through the lubrication system - this includes the oil cooler. Rubber cooler lines, such as those on most Toyota transmissions, break down over time and deposit bits of rubber throughout a transmission. Don’t contaminate the new transmission and oil with leftovers from the old transmission. One of the simplest, cheapest and most important ways to ensure a longer life for your reman transmission is to flush the cooler lines. This includes external coolers and external filter lines, as well as standard radiator coolers. Clean oil and compressed air are not enough. A good pressurized solvent, such as Joseph Industries Cooler Flush is the proper way to guarantee that all of the grit and sediment are removed. Proper transmission cooler cleaning can help prevent premature failures and prevent voiding your warranty. So do yourself a favor and get some “SOAP” for your transmission cooler. Order a can of Joseph Industries Cooler Flush with your next replacement transmission or transmission overhaul kit. DRIVELINE Vol. 6 No.1 A technical publication from Joseph Industries. Torque Converter The specialist in drive line replacement components for the industrial/construction equipment markets. New for 2002 Through the years, Toyota has used several styles of torque converters. These are broken into the Bolted Together “take apart” type and the one piece, non-servicable, Welded Together type units. In some cases, a Welded type unit may directly replace a Bolted Together type unit with an interchangeable drive plate and mounting hardware. Although these two types are usually interchangeable, this is not always the rule. Since the Bolted and Welded type units differ greatly in their costs to remanufacture, they are not considered “like kind” cores. In order to avoid possible customer core conflicts, Joseph Industries recommends that the unit being removed be identified so that the correct type replacement can be ordered. • Toyota Reman Engines • Toyota Application Listing • Q & A Section • Cooler Flushing Joseph Industries, pioneers in industrial remanufacturing, knows Toyota!! Q: What are the first steps when diagnosing an automatic transmission problem? A: 1) Check the oil level and the condition of oil. Is it low? Is it burnt? 2) Check transmission oil cooler, filter and oil cooler lines for physical damage or leakage. Plugged cooler or pinched lines can cause improper performance or erratic pressures throughout the entire system. If you suspect a problem here, bypass the cooler and filter with a simple loop hose and recheck the operation. type of oil should be used in an Q: What automatic transmission? Q: How can you tell if a torque converter is working correctly? A: The only sure way to tell is to perform a stall check on the vehicle. This is done by installing a tach and measuring the maximum r.p.m. that can be developed when the engine is revved to full throttle with the transmission in gear, the brakes locked and the unit against an immoveable object. The duration of this test should never exceed 30 seconds since excessive heat and stress is exerted on the entire drive train. A: A: Refer to the original manufacturers For a complete listing of all Replacement Parts offered by Joseph Industries, watch for your copy of the Joseph Industries Replacement Parts Catalog on CD that was mailed this September. Q: Should a torque converter be replaced For current New Product Announcements and Specials, check out our web site at www.joseph.com today. service manual for the recommended oil. Each OE specifies the type of oil to be used according to their application. The same type transmission in another application may require a different type of oil for that application. A: when doing a transmission job? Yes. A torque converter shares the same oil that the transmission uses. That oil has contaminants that are impossible to flush from the inside of the torque converter. The only way to avoid contaminating a fresh transmission is to install a new or remanufactured torque converter.
