Popeye the superhero, opposed to all forms of authority and tyranny, created by the American cartoonist, Elsie Chrisler Segar against the background of the Great Depression, in 1929. Popeye as an anti-hero defying conservative American economic power in the film directed by Robert Altman in 1981. Popeye as the critical paradigm of the cultural industry from a photograph by Alexandre Perigot, dating from 2002, of the site of Popeyeʼs village on the island of Malta, which served as the décor for the shooting of Altmanʼs film, Popeye, detracting from the spectacle-image with this same photograph of Popeyeʼs cinematic village associated with an audio CD by Xavier Boussiron freely interpreting themes by Roy Orbison. Popeye the tourist trap for the consumption of clichés; in 2003, the same photograph of Popeyeʼs village was enlarged on a huge billboard concealing the façade of a Venetian palace, leading tourist to run into the image of Popeyeʼs village as they took in the image of the city of Venice an the images from the contemporary art Biennale. Popeye in highly fragmented images in an artistʼs book by Perigot, including also a spiral text by Christopher Fiat on the figure of Popeye. Popeye the builder of his palace, Palaispopeye (2006), through the swirling dissemination of the image of Popeyeʼs village on the fixed and moving walls of an installation at the La Criée art centre and the Museu Colecção Berardo. Extract of the text Popeye Forever by Christophe Fiat from the catalogue Alexandre Perigot, Pipe Dream, Museu Coleccao Berardo, Lisbon, 2007 QUI EST POPEYE? ”. Cf. : LA DIALECTIQUE DU TIME / TIME OUT p. 30). PAN! PAN!). POPEYE EST À LA RADIO 4 ADAPTATION DʼUNE HISTOIRE DE POPEYE À LA RADIO À PARTIR DES PHASES ET MODES DE LʼART RADIO: “ Derrière lui, lʼoiseau chanta de nouveau, trois mesures monotones, constamment répétées. Chaos = K.O. TIME / TIME OUT du match de boxe. TIME : Popeye contre Temple Drake. TIME OUT: on dit “ la ” littérature. TIME! Deck you ! Boum! (on entend “ boum! Pam ! (on entend “ pam ! TIME OUT ! 1. 2. Popeye = POPEYE. Popeye©. “ Sanctuaire ”-de-Faulkner-est-leroman-alimentaire-de-Popeyeen-personne. 3. ”. 4. 5. FAULKNER DIT QUʼIL A ÉCRIT LʼHISTOIRE LA PLUS EFFROYA BLE QUʼON PUISSE IMAGINER ET QUE CʼEST UN SUCCÈS COMMERCIAL. Esprit? 7. WHO IS POPEYE? Popeye the character was invented by Faulkner. Popeye is not merely an advertisement for spinach nor a comic strip hero, nor for that matter the hero of a cartoon created by Elzie Crisler Segar, Popeye is a character from a novel. The novel based on Popeye is entitled “Sanctuary”. Popeye was born in 1931 in a rundown area of Mississippi. Later, Popeye is hung to death because he is an assassin and a rapist. “Sanctuary” tells the extremely sordid story of Popeye the small time heredosyphilitic, sadistic, powerless gangster, and of Temple Drake, a total vamp. So much the better that kids eat spinach because of Popeye! The art of novel writing consists, in theory, in developing a direct and tough contact zone traced out by Popeye. In that way children will no longer have illusions about the artistic world and the crisis of culture! Because the art of novel writing is to enter into contact with the elementary forces of a nonaccomplished present like the love story between Popeye and Temple Drake. In this way, children will come to understand to what point this world and this crisis are totally real, taking into account the language! The art of novel writing consists, in theory, of being a linguistic initiative whose title Popeye is the driving force. EAT SPINACH 1 Popeye? “Pop-eye!” Popeyeʼs vision (Eye) of the world is exorbitant because of the mass culture (Pop): the English crime novel, the pulp magazines, cinema and Para literature. Which language? A language which could cross the mass culture, making a mass of the population. Therefore, this language must be a sharp object or a spurred language or a spiked language because of Elzie Crisler Segarʼs spinach eating Popeye (Elzie Crisler Segarʼs spinach must be interpreted as Popeyeʼs possibility to be Popeye and not an ontological determination). What spinach? “Eat instead of staring into space!”. In “Spinach”, you have spine, meaning thorn. “Youʼre not leaving the table until youʼve finished whatʼs on your plate!” Spinach is a vegetable with thick, soft green leaves rich in vitamins and mineral salts. “If you donʼt eat your spinach, Popeye will eat you raw!” Are knowing, thinking, a result of the ingurgitation of foods like spinach? “Itʼs good, spinach, look, itʼs good, just look how good it is!” Is there a cannibal potential working inside all knowledge? “If you eat spinach, youʼll be strong like Popeye!” Can a word or a sentence be like food? “Eat!” What is this language? “Eat! Eat!” This language is a combat language, but a combat which is eventual reality of a poetic romantic reality. “Eat! Eat! Eat!” A NOVEL ABOUT FOOD 1 Faulknerʼs “Sanctuary” is a novel on food, that is why the knowledge is cannibal and combative! Yes but spinach is green and “Sanctuary” is a black (crime) novel? I decided that there was no reason why I shouldnʼt think about the profits too, Faulkner said. I took the time to speculate on what current problems someone from Mississippi could have . I stopped when I felt I had come across the right answer, and then invented the most awful story that could be imagined . It took three weeks to write it. Itʼs that or drinking. “If you drink, little guy, youʼll be a terrible kid all your life and thatʼs good because youʼll be strong like Popeye!”. If you drink, sweetie, youʼll be a baby doll with long legs, slender arms and small high cheeks like Temple Drake!” “Drink! Eat your spinach! Drink! Eat your spinach! Drink! Eat and shut up!” “In any case, whether you drink or not, whether you eat or not, youʼll end up losing your childhood which SOLANG PRODUCTION PARIS-BRUSSELS WWW.SOLANG.FR is doomed, anyway!” Culture, even mass culture, never helped to transmit anything. Itʼs simply good to explore the world. Population? If “Sanctuary” tells the extremely sordid story with Popeye and Temple Drake + Gowan, a drunk and loser student + Goodwin, a petty smuggler + and Goodwinʼs wife, a former prostitute + Tommy a congenial idiot + Veal, an older dodderer + Horace, a lawyer harassed by his wife, this is to populate the Mississippi and the United States and all the seas of the world with all the crazy people in the universe. “The dollar is a green note like spinach and the universe black like a crime novel children, never forget that children!” TEMPLE DRAKEʼS NAME SCRIBBLED ON TOILET WALLS AND POP-EYE SYNDROME For Faulkner, the novel consists in reconstituting the true order of events seen by a witness of the drama (Eye) who is firstly, afar and indifferent, and quickly gets into the story and after a few pages finds himself implicated in business that doesnʼt concern him (Pop). Why? So as not to be the target of the Mississippi crazy people (Popeye). But these ocular witnesses expose themselves in incredulity when the spectacles that they reveal are of a too scandalous nature (Temple Drakeʼs name scribbled on toilet walls). Also, what is important for Faulkner, is the kind of fascination that the discovery of these spectacles creates within the witnesses: “In the silence, Tommy could hear the light and regular rubbing of the ball of corn that garnished the mattress on which Temple was lying, hands crossed over her chest, legs outstretched and hieratically joined, like a recumbent statue.” LITERATURE IS A WEAPON 1 Boxing, oh yes. “I want to go and see a boxing match after dinner!” shout Popeyeʼs child fans. A good novel is a boxing match. A good novel is an anthropology of boxing. Yes but the ring is not a stage, the ring is only a means for 1 boxing to permit literature to rival all the conventional weapons of our advanced democracies. Is literature a more intelligent weapon than the average weapons? “Yes” according to boxers. Because literature paralyses the enemy without killing it. Literature does not lynch. But literature is a weapon of the fourth generation developed in the laboratories of writers in Southern United States. Firstly, the advantage of literature over the other weapons, is that it possesses effects which are difficult to detect. Secondly, literature has more and more selective effects on certain functions, in particular cerebral, which are often subtle effects, therefore natural. So, literature activates very specific genes that can set off phenomena of life and exuberance of life (versus the pathogenic effects of weapons of the second generation — revolvers — and of the third generation — atomic bombs). LITERATURE IS A WEAPON 2 The first example of a forth generation literary weapon or the appearance of Popeye in William Faulknerʼs “Sanctuary”: “Behind him, the bird had started singing again, three monotone bars, constantly repeated: a tune lacking both sense and profoundness, coming out of the silence full of sighs and peace which seemed to isolate the place, and from where came, right afterwards, the sound of a car going by in the street and then fading in the distance. Having drunk, the man kept kneeling near the source. ʻIs that a revolver in your pocket?ʼ asked Popeye. From the other side of the source, Popeye was staring at the man, his eyes looked like two buttons made of pliable black rubber. ʻIʼm talking to you, do you hear?ʼ said Popeye. ʻWhat have you got in your pocket?ʼ The man still had his jacket over his arm. He reached towards it. A worn-out felt hat was poking out of one pocket, and from the other a book. ʻWhich one?ʼ he said. ʻYou donʼt have to show me, Popeye said, you only have to tell me.ʼ The hand stopped still. ʻItʼs a book.ʼ ʻWhat book?ʼ asked Popeye. ʻJust a book. A book like everyone reads. Some people do read.ʼ ʻDo you read books?ʼ said Popeye.” Second example of a fourth generation literary weapon for the disappearance of Popeye in William Faulknerʼs “Sanctuary”: “They came to get him at six A.M. The pastor accompanied Popeye, his hand on his elbow, and he stood in prayer at the base of the gallows as they adjusted the rope that they slid over Popeyeʼs oiled, glistening head, ruffling his hair. As his hands were tied, Popeye shook his head to push his hair back each time it fell forward. The pastor prayed, the others were in position, standing still, heads bowed. Popeye started to jerk his head around. ʻPssst!ʼ he went, and his pssst cut through the mumbling of the pastorʼs voice like a knife; ʻpssst!ʼ The sheriff looked at him; he stopped jerking his head around as if he were balancing an egg on his head. ʻTidy my hair up, Jackʼ he said. ʻOk, said the sheriff. Iʼll sort it out for you.ʼ And there he flipped the trap door.” 1 The last bout of American history or the thesis / hypothesis / prosthesis of a post-modern historical world atmosphere. In 1931, the date when “Sanctuary” was published, the United States was the axis of evil. Since the financial crash of October 1929, America has been in shock and the number of unemployed in the millions. In 2003, the United States is the axis of good and make justice reign throughout the world. As proof of this here is an extract of George W. Bushʼs speech to the American nation read the day before the United Stats invaded Iraq in the spring of 2003. “My fellow citizens, at this hour American and coalition forces are in the early stages of military operations to disarm Iraq, to free its people and to defend the world from grave danger. My fellow citizens, on my orders, coallition forces have begun striking selected targets of military importance to undermine Saddam Husseinʼs ability to wage war. These are opening stages of what will be a broad and concerted campaign. My fellow citizens, more than thirty five countries are giving crucial support, from the use if naval and air bases, to help with intelligence and logistics, to the deployment of combat units. My fellow citizens, the dangers to our country and the world will be overcome. My fellow citizens, we will pass through this time of peril and carry on the work of peace. My fellow citizens, we will defend our freedom. My fellow citizens, we will bring freedom to others and we will prevail. May God bless our country and all who defend her!” SOLANG PRODUCTION PARIS-BRUSSELS WWW.SOLANG.FR POPEYE IS NASTY LIKE THAT WITH EVERYONE BECAUSE POPEYE DOESNʼT KNOW THE DIFERENCE BETWEEN A REVOLVER AND A BOOK. POPEYE ON THE RADIO 1 Now, say: “POPEYYYE!” Say it as if you were on the radio, go on say: “POPEYYYE! POPEYYYE! POPEYYYE!”. Youʼre on the radio. Because literatureʼs destiny, since Ezra Pound and Antonin Artaud, is to finish up on the radio. There has to be a physical side to literature. Something has to come out of the sexy lip-sticked mouth of Temple Drake whose lips are audaciously painted with Popeyeʼs dead nicotine smoking mouth, grimacing because of the curling cigarette smoke. No “Pop-eyes” without stereophony. Because these novels must be read! We have to make them talk! Therefore, since the novel is the axis of a combat language which is constantly evolving and still incomplete, the novel forms in front of our eyes and ears. So literature becomes an incredible sonorous object. The bursts of terror in “Sanctuary” must break out! This is why the language of literature is a language that is a sharp object or a spurred language or a spiked language. Record it? The sonorous object is always a multiple (never a note). The sonorous object is always a series of events (itʼs not a picture). Listen? Yes but is Faulkner amazed by the spectacle of a human inhumanity that could have spinach in his veins instead of blood? If it is the case, the word POPEYE should also be a war cry: “POPEYYYE!”. Popeye / POPEYYYE is he a monster? Say: “POPEYYYE!” Literature must sound monstrous for it to be legible! There has to be a singular ritornellos that makes the literature stand out from the framework of the book! There must be a gramophone effect that is so loud that we hear Popeyeʼs voice on the radio and Temple Drakeʼs screams as sheʼs raped in the barn! There must be a catastrophic radiotelephony! There must be a soundtrack! There must be a voice over that is not merely a voice speaking but which would be the experience of literature being forced to be read, and contradicted in the written text, outside of all the books, and which would be a battle between the voice and the sentences! POPEYE ON THE RADIO 2 Because as soon as culture and art have reached their independence, a process begins in which culture and art question their social function. So everything comes undone. Even literature? Even literature! So that literature does not dissolve itself, literature needs to change its stand and become a more voluminous sign, richer than the active combat in the internal and external ear of the reader. The voice must put literature into situation. A mystical voice? A musical voice? No! A recorded voice. So as to directly touch the public of the mass culture. A hypertrophied listening capacity! A receptive power! A continual listening! Respiration! Word of Mouth! Rumours! Atmospheres! And then the worry of live, the first shot counts! POPEYE ON THE RADIO 3 ADVICE FOR READING THE APPEARANCE AND DISAPPEARAANCE OF POPEYE IN “SANCTUARY” ON THE RADIO. The idea of the revolver must be used to the full, using detonation sounds because the detonation of a revolver is more explicit on the radio than on the pages of a book that we flick through, even if the book is Faulknerʼs “Sanctuary” (if no revolver is available, a specific dramatic art must be created, for example, a boxing club. (f: THE DIALECTIC OF TIME / TIME OUT p.30). At the same time, the use of a revolver allows to emphasize the idea that literature is a weapon and not a tool. Indeed, the advantage of radio, is that its impact is threefold: firstly, radio is a means of mass communication which means that it makes the existing sonorous arts accessible (BAM!), secondly, radio is a source of a technological creation which allows the effects of language to be complicated (BAM! BAM!), thirdly, radio is a source of philosophical revolution because radio arouses new artistic aspirations in the domain of live performance and forms of live art and all this thanks to the recording and broadcasting (BAM! BAM! BAM!) POPEYE ON THE RADIO 4 ADAPTATION OF A POPEYE STORY ON THE RADIO USING PHASES AND MODES OF RADIO ART: “Behind him, the bird had started singing again, three monotone bars, constantly repeated”. Sound recording (studio time) sound / music / words. “They came to get him at six A.M. Iʼll sort it out for you.ʼ And there he flipped the trap door.” Live multimedia installation (studio time + real time) sound + image / music + colour / words + gestures. THE SPECTACLE OF LITERATURE Now, Popeye is in the ring. The Mississippi is a ring. The novel is a ring. Faulkner is a ring. Thereʼs more to life than art and culture, thereʼs the ring too! Here, the idea of the ring is important because no book could ever contain as much ethic as a ring! Oh yes, here we need ethics, because here the anatomical destiny of literature is being played between Popeye and Temple Drake, this is the starting point of chaotic literature within which “Sanctuary” is the crisis. Indeed, in literature, we put up a fight against the limits of language but in the ring, we put up a fight against someone. Who? Temple Drake. The passing from language to the ring develops the space of a new place which reveals itself in the course of the dialectic. Does the ethic come from a method that cannot be accounted for in literature? Does it depend on the state of chaos? Does the ethic explain everything except the possibility for a living man (William Faulkner) at the time, to write it? Does that also depend on the state of chaos? Can the ethic not appear in whatever time? Chaos = K.O: TIME / TIME OUT of a boxing match. TIME: Popeye versus Temple Drake. TIME OUT: in French, literature is feminine. TIME: Popeye: the boxer is a living system. Temple Drake: the boxer is at the frontier of nature and culture from where a prefabricated exoticism ensues. TIME OUT: whereas literature is the place. It has to situate itself in bigger and bigger places that are thrown forward and projected and which are mechanisms of projection. But literature also must find its own place in itself (which can be, by logical extension, that is to say, the ring). If literature cannot find its own place in itself, it has to rely entirely on the author to come back to itself. Therefore it uses an object to revolve around. This is where the idea of revolution comes in to qualify literature as a weapon. This is what captivates the reader in his interiority because the reader becomes the counter-hero in as much as Popeye becomes the hero. The revolution or the melodrama of Popeye and Temple Drake: Popeye with his “pop-eyes” exposes literature to the “temple” of Temple Drake, but this optical and audio phonic exposure doesnʼt last much longer than a boxing match. Does the ring replace a temple? THE DIALECTIC OF TIME / TIME OUT A beating session (without spinach) between Popeye and Temple Drake whom Popeye is going to rape because he believes in castration and she doesnʼt. TIME! Popeye and Temple Drakeʼs gloves touch. Popeye moves in on Temple Drake straight away and throws in some quick jabs that Temple Drake avoids. Temple Drake stops Popeye quickly to say: “If youʼre out to hunt me, Popeye, keep your guard up or Iʼll send you flying onto the tarpaulin. Deck you!” Temple Drake puts her hands up again. Popeye starts forward again. Popeye, who hasnʼt eaten any spinach, is determined to hit a woman even harder that usual, readily risking that Temple Drake hit harder than him, which is what actually happens (Popeye wonders if Temple Drake might have had some spinach). Popeye and Temple Drake check each other out. Popeye tries to find the right distance. A few jabs and rights blocked from both sides. Popeye catches Temple Drake with a jab to the body, before laying into her with a combination of left-right-left hook. Boom! (We hear “boom!” from the ring.) Right in Temple Drakeʼs face! Temple Drake takes a step back and then counter-attacks just as quickly. Instead of falling back, Popeye waits steadfastly for Temple Drake whilst attempting to fend of the hits. Temple Drake throws Popeye a straight left jab right in the mouth. Popeye hangs in there and catches Temple Drake out, thanks to his favorite move: feint jab and wide right cross to the face whilst Temple Drake moves to her left to dodge Popeye. Thwack! (we hear “thwack!” in the ring). Popeyeʼs fist hits Temple Drake right on the cheek. Temple Drake nods an “ok” to Popeye. Temple Drake is surprised that Popeye is boxing so ardently and accelerates the pace even though he hasnʼt eaten any spinach. Temple Drake moves in on Popeye, her mouth pushed out of shape by the mouth guard, eyes popping out with concentration. Popeye moves back and jabs in an attempt to protect himself. Temple Drake fakes a direct left and hits Popeye with a hard right to the side. Popeye takes the hit and retreats. Then Popeye pushes Temple Drake into a corner, jab, right, jab, and Popeye catches Temple Drake with a beautiful right uppercut just as Temple Drake ducks to avoid Popeyeʼs jab. Temple Drake does, however, very efficiently block most of Popeyeʼs shots: Popeye sees the openings but, by the time his fist gets there, Temple Drake has closed the way in by turning her body away. Temple Drake suddenly quickens the pace and pummels Popeyeʼs head with quick direct hits that Popeye doesnʼt see coming. The left hand side of Popeyeʼs chin has started to sting. Popeye takes a few hits and then decides to attack Temple Drake but Temple Drake stops Popeye in his tracks with a series of jabs to the body. TIME OUT! SOLANG PRODUCTION PARIS-BRUSSELS WWW.SOLANG.FR POPEYE FOR EVER Popeye decides to rape Temple Drake because Temple Drake plays on the effect of castration that she doesnʼt believe in because of the choice of her clothes, her fabrics, her material, her makeup, all of the above set off by the play on contrast and the most allegorical colours like black for bad, red for lust and white for death. Why does Popeyeʼs erection always “wilt”? Because “Ring” means circle. Why does Popeyeʼs erection always “wilt”, even in literature? Because literature exerts beauty and a too violent appeal for Popeye which means that he confuses literature and Temple Drake. Popeye in the ring is the same as Popeye in the vicious circle. Therefore, God holds Popeye by the balls, God or Faulkner or Elzie Crisler Segar. Name: Popeye. Characteristics: Popeyeʼs semic dilation as multiple and incongruous cultural and artistic scenes each time the POPEYE is pronounced. Say: “POPEYE!”. Then it happens. Itʼs armed. There are interactions. Say: “POPEYYYE!”. Yes, one can speak with a mouthful of spinach! It continues. An absolute speed is reached. Say: “POPEYYYE!”. Yes, one can think with a head full of spinach! It hovers. Is it the right speed with which to say things? Say: “POPEYYYE!”. Yes, one can live a life full of spinach! There are many stories told about Popeye to children to the point where the sound and the sense of the language function and operate the passage between what is written (the novel “Sanctuary”) and what is heard (“POPEYYYE!”). LITERATURE IS A WEAPON 3 Popeye is a conceptual relay or an ethical experience. The proof: thereʼs ring! Thatʼs why Popeye, itʼs bad. “Popeye, itʼs not good to hit girls, even if the girlʼs called Temple Drake and not even if itʼs in a ring, Popeye.” This is why William Faulknerʼs Popeye is a total brute. This is why Popeye will die. Because Popeye is an anomaly! Popeye doesnʼt know what he should do, Popeye just does. Thatʼs all. Popeyeʼs social field. Say: “POPEYYYE!”. Yes, one can love somebody and eat spinach at an intimate dinner for two with him. What does Elzie Crisler Segarʼs Popeye think of when he eats spinach and why does William Faulknerʼs Popeye only eat spinach when he lives in Mississippi? Does this language, that is literature, invent new reasons to exist because of ethic? William Faulknerʼs Popeye doesnʼt eat spinach, he rapes and kills instead. Raping and eating, itʼs to know but according to a logic of evil, whereas eating itʼs to know but according to a logic of good. How many reasons are there to exist? Is raping, eating? Children will quickly learn that they have to put themselves on the other side of culture. Where language seesaws. Not before culture, nor after culture but where culture is made! And art? No-one has to know that itʼs art, except for the artists and Popeye 1. Because the truth is that we all find ourselves caught up in the need for leisure and entertainment because we are all subjugated to the great life cycle. 2. Whether it be pure hypocrisy or social snobbism that we deny ourselves the power of entertainment and amusement of those things that make up entertainment and leisure. Evolution of language and cultural phenomena. In 1980, Robert Altman made a film about Popeye. The film is entitled: “Popeye”. Robert Altman, produced by the Disney studios, had an authentic fishing village built on the sea front on the island of Malta, with wood imported from Holland and Canada. The village is called Sweetheaven. This village is made up of 165 houses. Robert Altman also had a huge breakwater made to protect the village and the film crew from the wind and waves during the seven months shooting. Here is the story of Popeye in Sweatheaven: Popeye comes to the village looking for his father who abandoned him when he was a young child. Today, one can visit Popeyeʼs village, the proof: [email protected]. Can one visit Popeyeʼs village in Malta as one can visit Faulknerʼs novel “Sanctuary”? 3. That art and culture are threatened, they are certainly less threatened by those who fill their free time with leisure activities than by those who fill it with a few educational gadgets with the aim of improving their social standing. ABOUT A POTBOILER 2 Yes but why are there no rhetorics including the pleasures of eating, when there is a rhetoric wide enough to include the pleasures of making love? 1. FAULKNER SAID THAT HE HAD WRITTEN THE MOST AWFUL STORY IMAGINABLE AND THAT IT HAS BECOME A COMMERCIAL SUCCESS. If Popeye, if the name Popeye makes language evolve, how and when does language change? Is Popeye an artist of evil like Maldoror, knowing that Popeye is also a sailor like Maldoror who says he sees, from the sea shore, during a storm a ship in trouble sending out canon balls as a distress signal before slowly and majestically sinking? 2. FAULKNER SAID THAT HE HAD WRITTEN THE MOST AWFUL STORY IMAGINABLE AND THAT IT HAS BECOME A COMMERCIAL SUCCESS. If Faulkner and Elzie Crisler Segar hadnʼt invented Popeye, Popeye would have to exist in any case because the representation of man in the novel (art) and in the world (culture) depends on Popeyeʼs existence. Yes Popeye is Popeye. Popeye = POPEYE. Popeye©. Faulknerʼs “Sanctuary”– Is-thepot- boiler-of-Popeye-in-person. 3. Faulkner said that he had written the most awful story imaginable and that it has become a commercial success. With Popeye, and in Popeye, was born, to a certain extent, the future of all literature. This literature is chaotic because of mass culture (the English crime novel, pulp magazines, cinema and Para literature). Those are types of literature that tell us how one should anticipate the periods that remain for us to live. Literature of survival because the world is before us and because the world can be modelled because the world is objective, because the world depends on the SOLANG PRODUCTION PARIS-BRUSSELS WWW.SOLANG.FR intervention of a technique of distancing: “From beyond…” 4. FAULKNER SAID THAT HE HAD WRITTEN THE MOST AWFUL STORY IMAGINABLE AND THAT IT HAS BECOME A COMMERCIAL SUCCESS. If “Sanctuary” is one of the greatest novels of the XX century, itʼs because it is no exaggeration to look for theological sub-structures in Faulknerʼs work that re not evocative of an eschatology but which hammer in deeper our evolution in the midst of a post-metaphysic of which the sea (if we take into account Maldororʼs story of the sinking ship) would be the spirit, and the earth, the matter. 5. FAULKNER SAID THAT HE HAD WRITTEN THE MOST AWFUL STORY IMAGINABLE AND THAT IT HAS BECOME A COMMERCIAL SUCCESS. Spirit? When one reads Faulkner one is hit by the visible disgust which he has when faced with the sexual act as well as its misogyny. Matter? Faulkner refers at least once to the bible in the title of one of his novels “Absalom! Absalom!” which is a title that evokes an ancient Hebrew meditation ritual. Dialectic between spirit and matter: but in “Sanctuary”, one cannot comprehend the contemporary events which take place around the appearance and disappearance of Popeye outside the sacred context that gives a novel its meaning, hence the title “Sanctuary”. 6. FAULKNER SAID THAT HE HAD WRITTEN THE MOST AWFUL STORY IMAGINABLE AND THAT IT HAS BECOME A COMMERCIAL SUCCESS. In “Sanctuary”, Faulkner looks to bring about a sacred bewitchment on the reader in which Popeye is the hero and Temple Drake / temple — the “temple” is the heroine. Thus we can ask ourselves if Popeye is not really a hero, precisely because Faulknerʼs reader is a counter-hero, an outsider to the story that he reads at the same time, understanding that something monstrous is taking place because he realizes that the survivor of this chaotic literature will surely be him, and not the writers, nor Popeye. 7. FAULKNER SAID THAT HE HAD WRITTEN THA MOST AWFUL STORY IMAGINABLE AND THAT IT HAS BECOME A COMERCIAL SUCCESS. EAT SPINACH 2 The ideal witness to Faulkner is the reader who reads an unpublished poem dedicated to Popeye on the radio: Popeyeʼs ritornellos or the consecration of temple Drake (to tell to sick children who like spinach) Popeyeʼs dick is the shape of corn cob Popeyeʼs muscles are full of spinach Popeye is a risk taking hero Because of adventures that go wrong because Itʼs not easy when you are called “Popeye” To be loved by girls. Popeye, to be a sailor without a boat, itʼs the same As being a duck out of water. SOLANG PRODUCTION PARIS-BRUSSELS WWW.SOLANG.FR
