delivery of cases via a carrier to any mainland UK address. Please inquire with the Butler if
you wish to use this service.
Some notes follow intended to help negotiate a lengthy list; the Butler is, as always, also very
happy to advise on selections.
Great Value
Prosecco di Valdobbiadene is a delicate sparkling wine from Italy that has apricot and
elderflower on the entry. It is delicious. We have found a champagne to undercut our house
offering, the Clos la Chapelle, Instinct, Brut, Champagne, NV. This has a little age on its
premier cru fruit and is fantastic value. The Syrah, Pasquiers is very drinkable – loads of
red fruit on the entry but not at all heavy handed. A good party wine. The Cuvée Paradeaux
is more complicated: a blend of syrah, grenache, cabernet and mourvedre. It is also made in a
light style and would be a very good all rounder for parties. Ch l’Ermitage, Costières de
Nimes is made from roussanne, grenache and viognier. It has a lovely perfumed entry and a
leesy mid palate. This would be great with canapés. Mas Cristine, Côtes du Roussillon
Villages is a more serious wine that sees some oak. It has an amazing peach entry which
gives way to a full finish. This is a wine with structure and heft – it would be great with
poultry or rich fish dishes. Beaujolais Villages, les Pivoines has refreshing crunchy fruit
without the boiled sweet finish of young gamay. This is textbook Beaujolais at Villages level
and great value. Entry level red Burgundy is a mine field; most of the wines we see are not
worth paying out for, but the Bourgogne Pinot Noir, les Ursulines really bucks the trend.
This has beautifully defined pinot fruit on the entry and although it does not have great length
it has such purity of fruit flavours one cannot but admire it.
From our long admired maker in Gigondas, Louis Barruol, the Little James’ Basket Press,
St Cosme is made by blending recent vintages. A recent bottle consumed with moussaka
was a delight: it has sweet fruit and good balancing acidity. Not a serious wine, but fabulous
value. Buy all you can of this. From the magnificent 2010 Rhone vintage, the Cairanne,
Domaine d’Ameillaud has more weight and would be a perfect match for stews. 1997
Hermitage, Le Gréal, M. Sorrel is made by an outstanding vigneron in Tain. When I last
visited him he had just completed his 2010 wines, which are almost certainly the finest he has
ever made. This wine from the great 1997 Northern Rhone vintage nearly hits the same
peaks. It is now fully mature and is a sensation. The tar and black fruit of its youth has now
mellowed leaving a wonderful mouthful of precise raspberry flavour. This would be my pick
on the list for a traditional turkey meal. From that great 2010 vintage, but in white, the
Crozes Hermitage, E. Pochon has a scented entry of stone fruits and elderflower. The
acidity in this wine keeps it focused and it would be a good match for salmon. The St Aubin,
1er cru En Remilly, Marc Colin is textbook white burgundy – tightly wound with great
acidity at the close – and is a bargain for the appellation.
One does not associate Bordeaux with great value wines, but the 2009 Ch Labadie is just
that. A dry red wine that delivers masses of class at a very reasonable price. 2007 Goulée by
Cos d’Estournel, Médoc allows one to see what a great estate can do when it tries to make
entry level wine. This is well defined without being too polished. A bargain. The 2009 Ch
Capbern-Gasqueton, St.Estephe is more refined and will keep for a couple more years.
This would be great with grouse or squab.
Fans of cabernet franc should not miss out on 2010 Chinon, Domaine de la Semellerie.
This is one of the finest vintages ever for red Loire; try this with cold meats, it is utterly
delicious. There is a touch of flint to the Anjou Rouge, Domaine de Closel also from the
great 2010 vintage. This has more weight in the mid palate and would be a good partner for
poultry. Lime flower, lemon, grapefruit entry with an almost almond close, the 2005
Eitelsbacher Karthauserhofberg RS is an astonishing bottle of wine. Delicate yet
enormously satisfying, this is a great Mosel Riesling from a top estate. It will also keep
another ten or more years.
The selections from Italy are well worth sampling. Don’t miss out on Conviviale,
Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Adria Vini; this wine is very quaffable but it also has the fruit
weight – all cherry and plum – to make one sit up and attend. This is a bargain. Braghe, C.
Mariotto, Colli Tortonesi is very unusual, made from freisa, it has a wild strawberry entry
with clove and grippy tannin at the exit. It is fantastic with light pasta dishes. We have been
following Silene, Cesanese, Olevano Romano, D.Ciolli for a few years now. This is
drinking beautifully and is also from an unusual varietal, cesanese. Try this with tomato
based dishes. Even more recherché is the Il Frappato, Valle dell Acate, from Sicily. This is
extraordinarily vibrant, with big acidity. Wow! Back to earth with the Barbera d’Asti, La
Tota, Alfieri, a great value Italian that works well with roast meats. A very refreshing white,
the Incó, La Viarte, Delle Venezie has zippy citrus fruit, great as an aperitif . The Grillo,
Zagra, Valle Dell’Acate is an amazing Italian white from another little known varietal,
grillo. It has a very pronounced mandarin entry with some peachy overtones. This would be
fantastic with shellfish.
Spain is making outstanding wine at present – do not pass over these selections. We sold all
of last year’s Bobal/Cabernet Sauvignon, Fuenteseca, Utiel Requena – unsurprisingly as
this new wave Spanish medal winner is amazing value. Bright fruit with some real length,
this is one of the best values on the list. Buy all you can. Also a medal winner, the Mariona,
Alicante Bouschet, Bodegas Fustel, Alicante has dark fruits on the entry, a lovely perfumed
mid palate with great acidity. The tannins are chewy making this a fine match for hearty
dishes. We loved the Ultreia, Mencia, Raul Perez, Bierzo when we tasted it last year and
have let it develop. Now at its peak. 2011 Verdejo, El Tesoro, Castilla y León is simply
stunning value. It has a citrus entry with a slight grass edge – perfect aperitif wine. There is
more weight to the Xarel-Lo/Chardonnay, Castell de Raimat, Costers del Segre which
shows some citrus on the entry followed by spice and apricot. This is a very full bodied
white that would be a great substitute for white burgundy. Try it with turkey or fish dishes
with creamy sauces. Pull a cork on the Garnacha Blanca/Viognier, La Bascula, Catalan
Eagle, Terra Alta if you want something to balance rich fish dishes. It is made from
organically farmed vines and has a very impressive mouthfeel – rich but not cloying. Very
long and great value for all this flavour.
Chardonnay, Innocent Bystander, Yarra Valley is text book modern (i.e not over oaked)
Australian chardonnay. The Cabernet Sauvignon, Jester, Mitolo, McLaren Vale was a
knockout at a recent tasting: this has incredible fruit definition without getting too sweet or
grippy. Perhaps the best mid range Australian red I have tasted this year. The new release
from the man who brought us Cloudy Bay - 2012 Sauvignon Blanc, Greywacke,
Marlborough – is even better than the previous vintage. It sees a partial oak fermentation
but is restrained and very fine. This will be my stand-by white over the Christmas period.
Great wine and great value.
If you are tired of the standard white wine flavours try the 2011 Torrontes/Riesling,
Amalaya, Calchaqui Valley, Salta. It tastes of limes and pineapple. Astonishing. For a
good all rounder one cannot fault the 2011 Sauvignon Blanc, Sandveld. This has enough
weight to partner fish dishes but is also very good as an aperitif. The 2011 Chenin Blanc,
Peacock Ridge, Western Cape is more full throated, seeing a little oak. This is also
fantastic value.
Great Wines
As usual we are pleased to be able to offer a selection of some of the world’s great wines.
All of the following would make very handsome gifts or would grace a festive table
magnificently. 2007 Artemia, Ch Pesquié, Côtes du Ventoux is a full bodied southern
French red that is now drinking to perfection. This is brilliant with game. 2007 Ch Henri
Bonnaud, Palette is a lovely example of this very small appellation in the south of France a
few miles east of Aix. The appellation rules allow the use of up to 15 varietals but the mix
usually contains mostly grenache, syrah and mourvedre. This has a touch of the southern
Rhône but is more elegant than, say, a Vacqueyras. The last few bottles of Chapoutier’s 1996
Terra d’Or, Coteaux d’Aix en Provence, need to find a home. This is magnificent.
Jean-Marie Fourrier is making lush vibrant red Burgundy that seeks to preserve fruit (total
destemming is practiced here) – this Gevrey Chambertin, Aux Echezeaux, from the great
2002 vintage will keep another five or so years. The following ‘canicule’ vintage of 2003
produced some exceptional wines. See for yourself by pulling a cork from the 2003 Vosne
Romanée, 1er cru Malconsorts, F. Lamarche. This vineyard was first planted in 1610 and
has become one of the greatest vineyards in the Cote d’Or. From the same vintage, the
Volnay, Clos des 60 Ouvrées, Domaine de la Pousse d’Or is pure seduction. Sweet pinot
fruit on the entry with coiled power through the mid palate. 2000 Côte Rôtie, J-F.&
C.Garon comes from a maker who is being noticed more and more. This is a firm full
bodied syrah that would be a fine accompaniment to venison. Richer, with more grip and
tannin, the 2007 Gigondas, Prestige des Hautes Garrigues, Domaine Santa Duc would
also be a good choice for rich game dishes. This is from the vintage many think to be the
finest in recent memory. Buy the 2007 Châteauneuf du Pape, J-P. Versino, Domaine Bois
de Boursan and put some bottles away for ten years. This comes from my favourite address
in Châteauneuf. The white 1998 Hermitage, les Rocoules, M. Sorrel is now into its
secondary phase: restrained power characterises this superb wine. Try it with fresh water
fish. If you like your whites to be more explosive the 1997 St Joseph, les Granits,
Chapoutier delivers in spades. This is a magnificent melange of honeysuckle and apricot
with a mineral edge. It is made from very old marsanne and has extraordinary length.
Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey is currently making some of the best white Burgundy to be found.
His 2008 Chassagne Montrachet, les Anceignières, is firm, mineral and full bodied.
Astounding chardonnay with precision. This is one of my wines of the year. The 2006
Meursault, 1er cru Genevrières, Bouchard is certainly expensive, but it is also a great
wine. This is fatter than the previous – for lovers of rich white wines. We were offered a
tiny parcel of 2009 Puligny Montrachet, 1er cru Les Perrières, E. Sauzet which I
gratefully accepted. More citrus and steel here – its real signature is the balance it strikes
between fruit weight, rich coating flavours, and acidity. It is a very great bottle of wine.
There are many great wines in the Bordeaux selection. Stand-outs are: 1998 Ch Poujeaux,
Moulis, 2005 Clos du Marquis, St Julien and the 2005 Ch Pedesclaux, Pauillac which
beat all the fancier growths in the appellation at a blind tasting a few years ago. Don’t miss
out on one of the region’s most compelling dry whites, 1996 Domaine de Chevalier, Pessac
Léognan.
Although its price might lead one suspect that it could not keep this company, the 2011
Grüner Veltliner, Dürnsteiner Frauengärten, Pichler-Krutzler is a truly great wine. It has
amazing complexity of stone fruits, some white pepper with wet stone minerality. It closes
very long. This is also one of my wines of the year. Brunello can often disappoint, but the
2004 Brunello di Montalcino, Sesti delivers the full range of flavours found in great
examples: cherry and plum on the entry with a touch of thyme gives way to a meaty mid
palate that closes with the scent of violets. This is a great wine from a great vintage. The
2003 Barbaresco, Coparossa is atypical – from that hot European vintage – but that does not
detract from the pleasure it provides: wonderful ripe redcurrant fruit on the entry with some
earthy tones at the close. When I last served this it overshadowed all the other wines at table.
It is fantastic with venison. From Rioja, the 2007 Selección Personal, Abel Mendoza, is a
bench mark wine made from fruit on 40 year old vines. It sees twelve months in French oak
and has extraordinary poise. This would be magnificent with roast beef. More weight can
be found in the 1998 Cims de Porrera, Classic, Priorat made from carignan and garnacha
vines at about 2,000 metres altitude. It opens with graphite, black cherries and chocolate and
gives way to a very smooth close. This is now at its peak. One of the superstars of modern
Spanish winemaking, Jordi Rotllan Torra, has created the 2004 Tirant, Rotllan Torra,
Priorat. This is a dark, brooding wine that is rich, layered and dense in the mid palate. The
aromatics are in the vicinity of cherry, cassis and menthol with some lovely lifting floral
notes. It is made from garnacha (30%), cabernet sauvignon (25%) and carignan (25%) with
a little syrah (10%) and merlot (10%). Most of the vines are nearly 100 years old. This will
age effortlessly over the next decade. More down to earth in terms of price, but every bit as
thrilling is the 2011 Albillo, Picarana, Bodegas Marañones, Madrid. This has the heft of a
great white wine: dense fruit with amazing length. Check out the price. Buy this. Just as
impressive and from 100 year old vines, the 2009 Verdejo, Naiades, Bodega Naia, Rueda
has amazing fruit texture. Almost greengage at the entry but with a dense mid palate. This is
certainly a great wine.
Ben Glaetzer has become one of the names to follow in Australian wine making. When we
were offered a case or two of his 2006 Amon Ra, Ben Glaetzer, Barossa Valley I snapped
it up. This is far from a blockbuster – it has the restraint and complexity of an old world
wine. Made from 100% dry grown shiraz on vines of between 30 and 120 years old, it sees
15 months in new oak (80% French) and in this vintage produced a wine of exceptional
elegance. It avoids the jammy fruit of many old vine hot climate wines and is widely
regarded as one of the most sophisticated – and delicious – expressions of Australian red
wine making. 2002 Merlot, Shafer is a plush wine: seductive sweet currant fruit on the
entry, some mocha and herb in the mid palate. Now at its peak, this elegant wine would be a
magnificent addition to any Christmas feast.
Enjoy!
