with the young towards holiness”. This is the motto
of AGL province for the pastoral year 2013-2014. Father Camiel Swertvagher, Provincial, highlights Don
Bosco’s faith.

s we know in the Salesian Family, we are preparing the bicentenary
of Don Bosco’s birth in
2015. The Rector Major says : “After dedicating the first

wavered between God and his own

between duty and pleasure, but he

and Supreme Lord. From Him he
drew the sure law which governed
everything he did. Don Bosco never
sought his own self, his comfort or
satisfaction, his own advantage. He
spent his time, energy and efforts in
serving the Lord in the best way possible, working in the field entrusted
to him by divine Providence.
Don Bosco was a man of profound
faith and with a strong spirituality,
formulated within his overall program of life “Da mihi animas, caetera tolle”. According to our Rector
Major, the deep roots of Don Bosco’s spiritual experience were his union with God, being a man of faith,
hope and charity, and his spirit of
authentic piety. This experience was
then translated into visible activity,
and finally, as a point of arrival, he
had holiness: holiness that is within
everyone’s reach, depending on their
cooperation with grace; and everyone receives the grace for this. May

de former des consciences. J’insistais
: « Laissez-vous toujours guider par
la raison et non par la passion. » Je
préparais les jeunes aux défis de la
vie. Je les motivais au sens du devoir,
du travail, d’une profession honnête.
Je leur offrais des raisons de vivre,
responsables et joyeux. Mon seul but
était d’« éclairer l’esprit pour rendre
le cœur bon ». L’expérience m’avait
convaincu que les enfants « ont une
intelligence naturelle pour reconnaître le bien qui leur est fait personnellement et ils sont aussi doués d’un
cœur sensible facilement ouvert
à la reconnaissance.» Ma manière
d’éduquer exigeait beaucoup mais
offrait beaucoup plus encore.
J’avais hérité de ma famille une foi
simple et robuste. La religion était
la seconde colonne de mon système
éducatif. Mon rapport avec Dieu
était celui d’un fils. J’étais un prêtre
amoureux de l’Eucharistie, ponctuel
et paternel pour entendre les confessions de mes jeunes et à répandre
dans leur cœur la certitude du pardon et de la tendresse de Dieu. Dans
mes contacts continuels avec eux, je
cherchais à former « de bons chrétiens et d’honnêtes citoyens ». Je ne
me lassais jamais de leur indiquer la
Sainte Vierge comme l’Immaculée et
l’Auxiliatrice.

Par le mot « religion », je n’entendais pas l’exercice de
la piété détachée de la vie mais l’expression d’une foi
incarnée dans le quotidien. La religion, c’était « faire un
bel habit pour le Seigneur » avec chaque jeune, comme il
était advenu avec Dominique Savio. Et ainsi le Système
Préventif se transformait en pédagogie de la sainteté
pour les jeunes.
Je souhaite signaler le troisième axe porteur du Système
Préventif tel je l’ai vécu. Je l’ai transmis à mes Salésiens
comme un héritage sacré: la bonté affectueuse (amorevolezza). Un mot que je n’ai pas inventé mais que j’ai fait
mien. Un trait typique de ma manière d’éduquer. Dans
ce mot, je mettais une forme d’amour qui identifie l’éducateur aux jeunes jusqu’à lui faire aimer ce que les jeunes
aiment, jusqu’à transformer la relation éducative en style
de présence filiale et fraternelle, une présence amicale et
désirée, et jusqu’à transformer le milieu éducatif en une
« famille ». Là était contenu tout l’amour que j’avais reçu
de ma sainte maman, là jaillissait l’esprit de famille qui
faisait appeler « maisons» les œuvres créées ; là on respirait l’amour, la confiance, le respect, le goût d’être et de
travailler ensemble, comme je l’avais assimilé dans mon
milieu paysan ; là on respirait encore la cordialité faite de
sympathie, d’optimisme, de chaleur humaine. Un amour
qui transformait les éducateurs en « pères affectueux ».

fait lorsque j’étais encore enfant. La phrase mystérieuse
dite par la dame majestueuse – « Tu comprendras tout
en son temps » – commençait à prendre un sens plus
profond et plus vrai. Les valeurs éducatives en lesquelles
j’avais toujours cru étaient en vigueur. La preuve était
devant mes yeux : mes fils spirituels, ces enfants qu’un
jour j’avais accueillis et aimés au Valdocco se trouvaient au
travail, à la tête de prestigieuses typographies, directeurs
d’écoles renommées, missionnaires intrépides en Argentine. Je pouvais clairement affirmer : « La Congrégation
n’a rien à craindre. Elle a des hommes formés.» Je revoyais la scène de tant de rêves : « Ces animaux étaient
devenus des agneaux… Beaucoup d’agneaux devenaient
de petits bergers qui, en grandissant, prenaient soin des
autres. Les petits bergers, se multipliant en grand nombre,
se sont répartis et sont allés ailleurs pour recueillir d’autres
animaux étranges et les guider dans d’autres bergeries ».
Avec la grâce du Seigneur et la maternelle protection
de l’Auxiliatrice, triomphait la pédagogie de l’amour,
la charité inventive ; et mon héritage se répandait
sous toutes les latitudes:

Si on lit avec attention ces neuf feuillets sur le Système
Préventif, on s’apercevra que le mot « cœur » ou une ex- PASCUAL CHÁVEZ VILLANUEVA,

Quand je m’entretenais avec mes garçons ou que je leur
écrivais, j’employais l’expression « mes chers petits enfants ». Dans le dialecte piémontais, dont je me servais
pour me faire mieux comprendre, l’expression « petits
enfants » ne signifiait pas seulement une donnée biologique mais il incluait un sens plus ample et plus complet : la paternité spirituelle, celle dont pouvait se vanter
l’apôtre Paul (Gal 4,19) et que je concrétisais dans les
faits par le pain matériel, les soins physiques, l’aliment
intellectuel, la nourriture morale et spirituelle. Quand
je parlais d’amour, je me référais à une présence éducative. L’autorité se faisait service, l’expérience devenait
leçon de vie et l’amour se transformait en don de
soi, proposition et offre. L’amour devenait une
loi pédagogique irremplaçable. En dérivait ensuite une « familiarité » qui avait le goût d’une
véritable affection paternelle. Et il me plaît
ici de rappeler ce qu’avait écrit en 1883
un journaliste parlant de l’ambiance qui
régnait au Valdocco. Il affirmait : « D’un
bout à l’autre de la maison, on se sent
comme en famille.» Les jeunes me
comprenaient immédiatement ;
de simples destinataires, ils devenaient des protagonistes
enthousiastes. Beaucoup
d’entre eux étaient restés

The preventive system must really be ours
I always insisted that we must be faithful to our style of education. Years
and years of experience have proved
its worth. While the Salesian Congregation
was
spreading to many countries, I became more and more convinced that
the Preventive System must become
our inalienable inheritance, and the
centre around which our whole Salesian education work converges. It is
what gives our Salesian work its specific identity.
The Preventive System was not
the result of academic studies. It
was the fruit of an experience
of spirituality and education.
I did not give my Salesians a
scientific text, carefully edited
at my desk. What I handed
on to them was my passion
for the young. I gave them
the witness of my whole life
experience. The Preventive
System contained the values I had always believed
in.
I was not always fully understood. I remember one
typical situation. It was in
1885. I came to know, to my
great sadness and disappointment, that in some houses in
Argentina, especially the house at
Almagro, they were no longer following the Preventive System. They
had a rough approach, sometimes
hitting the youngsters and resorting to physical punishment. I had
to take a stand. I wrote three letters.
The first was to Bishop Cagliero, the
second to Fr Costamagna who was
Rector at Almagro, and the third
to a young priest.
Writing to “my dear
and always beloved Fr
Costamgna,”
I reminded
him
that
“the
Preventive System is really ours.”
With this sentence, I wanted to reaffirm our absolute fidelity to our educative method. This was not just a
fancy idea of mine, or a fixed notion.
It was a question of defending and
preserving an indispensable element
of our educational method. I recommended the others also to practise
“charity, patience and kindness” and
I begged them: “Let every Salesian
become the friend of all, quick to
forgive and ready to forget, once you
have forgiven.”
Writing to Bishop Cagliero I
summed up our whole educative
work in one monumental expression that was born out of a long and
positive experience: “Make yourself
loved, not feared.” The mysterious
words that I had heard in a dream
sixty years earlier came back to me.
I have never forgotten them. “You
must win over these friends, not
with blows but with kindness and
love.” Now I was beginning to understand “everything”, as I was told
in the dream.
These were little reminders given in
that family spirit which enables people to accept corrections. Later on,
I received letters that consoled me.
I found out that many of our confreres in Argentina remained faithful to the directives contained in my
letters. Indeed, some spontaneously
made a kind of vow that they would
live the Preventive System as if it
were a fourth Salesian vow.
I now saw this method of love and
kindness accepted and lived by my
spiritual sons in every part of the
world. I knew that everywhere under the sky the young people would
find in every Salesian another Don
Bosco – with the same heart, the
same love, the same passion...

The marchioness of Barolo:
A dynamic and Generous woman
T
he Marchioness of Barolo, formerly Juliette
de Colbert, was a married woman and a vivacious character whose life was totally dedicated to the poor. Though of French origin,
she acquired great renown in Turin society.
Widowed and childless at fifty-three, she would devote
herself and her fortune to improving the quality of
life of young women. Her first project was for women
prisoners, then the creation of orphanages and hostels
for young working girls. She then opened a refuge for
prostitutes looking for a better way of life. She was even
planning to build a hospital. It was at this stage of her
work that she first met Don Bosco. Another Turin priest,
Don Borel, had suggested to the Marchioness that she
should engage Don Bosco as spiritual director for her
young women of the Refuge, in return for a stipend and
living quarters. Don Bosco’s main preoccupation was,
of course, the continuation of his work for street children, though this arrangement did provide him with a
playground, and his room gave him a place for Mass and
confessions for his boys. However, this mutual agreement lasted only for a short while and finally collapsed
over a misunderstanding, mainly due to the clash of two
strong personalities. Don Bosco had secretly hoped to
make use of part of the new building for his youngsters,
whilst the Marchioness wanted Don Bosco to give his
undivided commitment to her girls. For her, putting up
with a noisy, turbulent crowd of boys was asking too
much, and, in any case, the inevitable contact between
the two groups was less than desirable. The final separation was quite amicable however, and the Marchioness
continued discreetly supporting Don Bosco’s work.
Aside from this brief episode, it has to be said that the
Marchioness of Barolo was an outstanding woman, who
displayed great energy and generosity. To the end of her
life she remained faithful to the ideal she had set herself:
in witness to her Christian faith, to give herself and all
her resources in the service of the neediest young women.
Commitment to the little people
When Don Bosco reaches out to God’s little ones, he
doesn’t come among them as a saviour. He is not some
great hero coming to change everything and solve all the
problems, as people often, and quite wrongly, talk about
him.
He does have some very clear convictions which will
shape his outlook and his line of action.
In the first place, the conviction that he has been sent by
God : his commitment is a response to a mission he has
received. He does nothing in his own name. His childhood dream has mapped out his involvement: who he is
sent to, what his goal is, and how he must operate. He is
at the service of this God-given task.
That explains why his presence among the most marginalised children is marked by assurance and respect. He
can accept the tentative beginnings, the forced displacements, the rebuffs and rejections, whether from adults,
or the young people themselves.
When, like Don Bosco, you are at the service of
an enterprise, you don’t look for immediate results, come what may. You know that the twists
and turns of events, and even the setbacks, are a
prelude to further openings. Education is sometimes more productive only when time seems to
drag its feet. Germination needs the winter, the
cold and even the frost. That’s how it is with Don
Bosco’s Oratory. It needs its passing phases, its
temporary roots before it can begin to spread all
its branches.
The greatest secret of Don Bosco, without any
doubt, is his ability to make his young people his
best partners. Without you, I can do nothing, he
would say to them. These little people, the ones
no one cares about, become the pillars of a great
enterprise built on the Providence of God. They
are his fellow builders, organisers, founders.

Joy of the Gospel:
Youth invited to be
On 26th November 2013 our
beloved Holy Father shared with
us his joy by writing a long letter
to all of us in the
church and the
world. He called
his letter “Joy of
the Gospel”. It is
an invitation to
us to be joyful.
He goes on to
describe what is
true joy, how we
can have it and
why it is important in life as a
human being and
as a Christian. As
a young priest
Pope Francis was
a teacher and he
does not forget
to teach young
people on joy as
well. He feels sorry that education
and other means
of reaching out to young people have failed greatly. He
wants the church, the adults and others in charge of
youth to make effort to reach out to them.
Let us listen to his words, “Youth ministry, as traditionally organized, has also suffered the impact of social
changes. Young people often fail to find responses to
their concerns, needs, problems and hurts in the usual
structures. As adults, we find it hard to listen patiently
to them, to appreciate their concerns and demands, and
to speak to them in a language they can understand”
(Article 105).
Dear girls and boys, the church loves you and the Holy
Father thinks of you and feels one with you. He is concerned about the unmet needs of young people and the
things that make them go astray. He also feels uneasy
about the adults and other institutions that do not listen to them, appreciate their talents and contributions.
He wants those who are responsible for their growth to
speak in a language that is understood by youth, meaning making young people feel welcome in the society
and the church.
Joyfull
Pope Francis goes on to say that to feel welcome in the
Church and society youth also has duties and responsibilities. The Holy Father expects the youth to contribute
leadership, their youthful talents, and much valuable voluntary activities to evangelize and to educate the society.
The pope affirms that youth can be easily reached by
other youth. He insists on peer-ministry. He wants youth
to contribute to the condition of joy, as all the youth are
longing for joy. The road to joyfulness is a two way path.
Joy is also an inside job. No one can make you happy
unless you decide to be happy.
JOY! It is also the catchword for Christmas. We wish
and pray that the Christmas that we have just celebrated
may continue its joy throughout the New Year 2014.

et nous dire ce que vous êtes dans la Famille
salésienne ?

Nos activités dans les milieux où nous sommes
insérés, sont nombreuses. Parmi elles, il y a
la catéchèse, l’engagement dans les comités
de jeunes de nos paroisses, le développement
de notre association ; nous nous investissons
également dans les services sociaux envers les
malades et les pauvres, dans l’animation de
mouvements de jeunesse et dans la prière avec
les jeunes et les autres chrétiens.
Je m’appelle Sophie Mukamuvunyi, je suis
Salésienne Coopératrice depuis 2012, coordinatrice de cette branche de la Famille

Le Fair-play, une école de sagesse
Les Jeux salésiens de cette année 2013, comme chaque année, ouvrent aux jeunes un
nouvel espace éducatif où le
spectacle autour du ballon rond
tend de plus en plus vers une
véritable école du développement intégral de la personne du
jeune.
A
ce grand rendez-vous
sportif, il y a quelque
temps, l’esprit compétitif semblait l’emporter
sur d’autres qualités
humaines, telle que le fair-play. Aujourd’hui nous sommes convaincus
que tous ensemble, jeunes et animateurs sportifs, avons le devoir d’y
voir croître un sport visant à promouvoir une culture de loyauté et de
gratuité. Malheureusement, pour la
plupart des jeunes, on a l’impression
que ce qui compte c’est de gagner le
match à n’importe quel prix et par
n’importe quel moyen, si déloyal
soit-il.
Ainsi avec cette mentalité, on assiste
à de nombreux cas de tricherie :
des joueurs qui se présentent sur les
terrains le jour du match sans avoir
été élève ou jeune d’un Centre, des
cartes d’identité de joueurs falsifiées,
des listes de joueurs non ratifiées par
l’animateur salésien local, etc. D’où
l’esprit de fair-play qu’on considère
comme l’objectif primordial à atteindre à travers les jeux salésiens.
C’est donc dans cette ligne qu’il faut
situer le thème retenu pour cette
année : Le fair-play, une école de
sagesse. C’est comme si on voulait
dire que le respect des règles du jeu
doit et devra retentir à l’endroit des
animateurs sportifs et jeunes comme
un refrain qui garantisse des rencontres sportives libérées des comportements déviants tels que la tricherie,
l’agressivité, l’emportement, l’impatience, le mensonge, la ruse et tous
les corollaires.
Nous devons être convaincus que,
pour qu’une équipe s’affronte avec
une autre équipe , il ne suffit pas
d’user de toutes ses potentialités
dont elle dispose pour remporter le
match; encore faut-il se rappeler que
la beauté du match se mesure à la
capacité des équipes en compétition
d’offrir une prestation sportive qui
sache exprimer les vertus humaines
les plus nobles que le sport est censé diffuser. De toutes ses vertus, le
fair-play représente, à notre avis, un
objectif majeur que les jeux salésiens
se doivent de mettre en valeur afin
de répondre aux nécessités éducatives et spirituelles de faire du sport
un instrument efficace d’évangélisation. Il s’agit en outre de passer du
sport comme espace compétitif au
sport comme une vraie école de formation à la loyauté et à l’amitié. Un
joueur qui pratique le fair-play, peut
alors, en toute vérité réciter avec le
père Georges Boyer le “Notre Père
du Footballeur”:
Dieu Père, notre Père du ciel et de
la terre
Cette terre, tu l’as créée ronde
comme un ballon!
Que ton nom soit sanctifié pour tous
les joueurs et spectateurs de chez
nous et d’autres peuples!
Que ton règne de joie, d’accueil,
d’amitié, de paix, de justice sociale,
de fraternité universelle entre races,
cultures, arrive !
Que ta volonté soit fête, faite
d’amour et d’espérance !
Comme Jésus, ton fils bien-aimé, a
su nous montrer le chemin, donnenous un esprit sportif.
Par ton Esprit Saint, tu nous rassembles, tu nous veux unis,
Aide-nous à respecter les adversaires, à accepter la défaite.
Et, si on est vainqueur, à féliciter les
perdants par des poignées de mains.
Pardonne-nous nos tricheries, nos
vacheries, nos défaillances, nos attitudes violentes,
Nos paroles blessantes, nos rejets
des autres, nos découragements.
Comme nous pardonnons à ceux qui
se sont moqués de nous,
Qui ne nous font pas confiance, pardonne ceux qui nous ont taclés.
Ne nous soumets pas à la tentation
de dominer les autres,
d’écraser les autres, de jouer trop personnel pour nous mettre en valeur.
Mais délivre-nous du Mal.

par Monseigneur Vincent Harolimana, Evêque du diocèse de Ruhengeri.
Dans son homélie, Monseigneur Smaragde Mbonyintege, Evêque du diocèse de Kabgayi, se basant sur
l’évangile du jour (Lc 21, 5-19), a demandé aux chrétiens de bien préparer le dernier jour tout en travaillant
et en priant. « Nul ne connaît ni le jour ni l’heure », a-t-il
souligné.
En s’adressant aux jeunes, il a cité quelques forces qui
sont les leurs mais aussi des faiblesses qui les fragilisent.
Il les a invités à rester inébranlables dans la foi malgré les
aléas de la vie.
Les jeunes ont eu l’occasion de suivre plusieurs enseignements. Tous les intervenants se sont inspirés du
thème que le Pape François avait proposé : « Allez donc,
de toutes les nations faites des disciples » (Mt 28, 19).

urely Facebook is one of the latest means
of communication especially among
peers and like-minded people. Gone are
the days when you used to meet an Old
Boy or an Old Girl and they ask for your
phone number. Nowadays the common question is, “are you on facebook” or if you happen to meet a friend famous for using broken
English then you will get something like, “you
are a facebook?” No matter whom you meet,
the point is, even the most docile of your former classmates is also actively using or misusing
Facebook.

At this level it becomes very important that care is taken
as concerns the use of Facebook; we are all addicted

It is very true that Facebook has recorded a good
impact in the lives of many people of different
backgrounds due to its cost friendliness and easy
availability to the user.
As others use Facebook for productive interaction and networking to grow their business enterprises or even pass on good social messages
others have made it their daily routine to inform
the world of their stupidity and immorality by
posting ‘updates’ which contradict their religious, traditional and family culture of discipline
and obedience.
Facebook is one of those sites where you having
comments like, “I have just lost my virginity”, “I
hate my physics teacher” and many others which
scare the Christianity out of you. As if the immorality is not enough, the addictive nature of
this site has forced many to use (rather misuse)
the site at any time possible and in any place. If
you are reading this and you are a Facebook user
you will agree that it is being used in odd places
such as the lecture room, toilet, taxi, bathroom
and church, yes church(?!).
It is believed that Facebook has fuelled international conflicts such as that in Libya and Syria

Family Gratitude Day at “Ecole Privée Marie Auxiliatrice” – Kigali.
It all happened on 29th June 2013 that sisters, collaborators and children
joined together to make their “thank you” tangible. It all began with a lively
Eucharistic celebration. Rev. Father Elie Nyandwi, sdb. outlined the beauty
of different contributions from all in their differences, and the necessity
of valuing one’s own abilities without undermining them. Sharing of the
lovely meal followed. Next was the entertainment moment. One group
after another tried to summarize their reasons for being grateful, songs,
speeches, dances, poems and gifts knocked at the opened door. What creativity! Even the unexpressed was felt. Sharing of the cake and the “good
night” talk by the animator Sr Mary concluded the memorable day.

Handing over in a spirit of Thanksgiving
The Bible tells us that there is a time and place for everything under the sun. These words became a reality on August
5th, 2013 in Makuyu with the official change of Provincial for the Salesian Sisters of AFE Province. The date was
meaningful because the Congregation was founded on August 5th, 1872 and is the date when many Sisters make their
first profession throughout the world.
Sister Teresa Fernandes, serving as AFE Provincial from 2007 to 2013 handed over the responsibility to Sister Chantal
Mukase, who has been the Novice Mistress for the past six years.
The theme of the 2014 General Chapter – Home : a place of encounter
and of sending forth – set the tone for a day mixed with emotions of
gratitude, nostalgia and anticipation of the future. In his homily at the
Eucharistic celebration Father Gianni Rolandi, SDB Provincial, said that
Sister Teresa would now sing her Magnificat not only because she has finished her responsibility, but for the wonders God worked through her for
the growth of the province these past years. Instead, he stated that Sister
Chantal’s Magnificat will be sung differently as she is sent forth to take up
a new role with meekness, compassion and patience.
After mass a delicious meal was enjoyed by all with each community contributing in the preparation. The afternoon was permeated with a creative
entertainment programme, gift giving and words and songs of appreciation to Sister Teresa and warm welcome to Sister Chantal in her new role
of animation in the Province

Le Père Raphaël Katanga, SDB, a écrit et publié un livre en Kiswahili ayant comme titre KIBEHO. MATOKEO YA
BIKIRA MARIA. Ce livre présente l’histoire des apparitions de la Vierge Marie à Kibeho (Rwanda) et le message qu’elle
a désiré communiquer aux hommes par l’intermédiaire des voyantes : elle nous invite à la prière et à la conversion. Le livre
entend diffuser ce message dans la langue africaine utilisée largement dans
la région de l’Afrique Centrale et l’Afrique de l’Est.
